Lyrics vs. Poems, or Is There A Elitist Difference?

Lol. Keep posting. I don't know, and I asked eagleyez (who's a musician--and, unlike me, old--lol, now I'm in trouble) and *he* doesn't remember, so....

this is an off-the-wall wild guess---

Incredible String Band?

:)

uh sorry ee

is the girl little orphan annie? :p
Nope, Nope, Nope! :)
Here is a better known song by the same group:
White bird,
in a golden cage,
on a winter's day,
in the rain.

White bird,
in a golden cage,
alone.

The leaves blow,
Across the long black road.
To the darkened skies,
in its rage

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
alone.

White bird must fly
Or she will die

White bird,
dreams of the aspen trees,
with their dying leaves,
turning gold.

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
growing old.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

The sunsets come, the sunsets go.
The clouds pile high, the air moves slow.
And the young bird's eyes do always know.

She must fly,
She must fly,
She must fly.

White bird,
In a golden cage,
On a winter's day, in the rain.

White bird,
In a golden cage alone.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

#9 - whishey stained lyrics

She would hide at the park and ride
Glued up to the gills
High tar cigarettes and sex
An appetite for pills
She's a shell of her former self
Bad natured on the shelf
And the honeymoon's wearing thin
It's a sign of the state we're in...

-Beautiful Loser, Catatonia

Here's a good un!

You all know what a steely dan refers to

right?

Dr. Wu (c) ???? Becker/Fagen

Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow

You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow

All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true

Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do

Are you with me Doctor?

Don't seem right
I've been strung out here all night
I've been waiting for the taste
You said you'd bring to me

Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day
I went searching for the song
You used to sing to me

Katy lies
You could see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise
When I saw you

Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
She is lovely yes she's sly
And you're an ordinary guy
Has she finally got to you
Can you hear me Doctor?

I haven't eaten my lunch naked in over 40 years, but I think steely Dan was the grandfather of a gentleman who was stolen from this site some time ago. :D

Currently listening to Moby! Really! (now to find some grapes...)

There's a very appropriate Yiddish saying about youth not tempting death by insulting age, and if I weren't senile I'd have remembered it and posted it here. :p

i leave for three days...

and y'all hijack my thread into a quotatorium.

WELL DONE!

There's something subversive
About you and me
Cause there's a market value on love
We're getting something for free
I don't know why, but when we're apart
Something makes me wanna start
Setting fires and kicking down doors
I hope we never have to resort
To dividing what is mine and what is yours

There's something coercive
About the way some people smile
Wide open as if to say
"C'mon in and browse awhile"
And sometimes when your resistance is low
Remember that I know
Who's your favourite Pogue

There's a place in my soul where no one else can adore you
And like the poet soldier says, I would spill my blood for you

There's nothing conclusive
In this whole world
Cause flags can change and martyrs die
And there's many town left to burn
But somewhere between there and here
For one night hold me near
And sing my shallow tears

And we'll drink, but not to forget
But to remember instead
All our happy years.

~"Subversives", Lowest of the Low (a wonderful, defunct Canadian band).

But there's poetry in off-meter too:

One
with her
hands
open

"don't be afraid"
she said
"no one will know it
just you and me

and when it's over
I'll go back"

~"The Pool", Tori Amos

Prof Denis, I found it

I know its late on the thread for this, but I found the lyrics to smugglers blues :)

Smuggler's Blues
from the Glenn Frey LP "The All-Nighter"

There's trouble on the streets tonight,
I can feel it in my bones.
I had a premonition,
That he should not go alone.
I knew the gun was loaded,
But I didn't think he'd kill.
Everything exploded,
And the blood began to spill.
So baby, here's your ticket,
With your suitcase in your hand.
Here's a little money,
Do it just the way we planned.
You be cool for twenty hours
And I'll pay you twenty grand.
I'm sorry it went down like this,
Someone had to lose,
It's the nature of the business,
It's the smuggler's blues.
The sailors and pilots,
The soldiers and the law,
The payoffs and the ripoffs,
And the things nobody saw.
Don't matter if it's heroin, cocaine, or hash,
You gotta carry weapons
'Cause you always carry cash.
Lots of shady characters,
And lots of dirty deals.
Every name's an alias
In case somebody squeals.
It's the lure of easy money,
It's got a very strong appeal.
Perhaps you'd understand it better
Standin' in my shoes,
It's the ultimate enticement,
It's the smuggler's blues, smuggler's blues.
You can see it in the headlines,
You hear it everyday.
They say they're gonna stop it,
But it doesn't go away.
They're movin' through Miami and sellin' in LA,
They hide it up in Telluride,
I mean it's here to stay.
Proppin' up the governments in Columbia and Peru,
You ask any DA man,
He'll tell you "Nothin' we can do",
>From the office of the President,
Down to me and you, you and me.
It's a losing proposition,
But one you can't refuse.
It's the politics of contraband,
It's the smuggler's blues, smuggler's blues.

Dug up this - just like it. Good tune too.

Sung by Jack Sheldon -

TULIP OR TURNIP

Tulip or turnip, rosebud or rhubarb,
Fillet or plain beef stew,
Tell me, tell me, tell me dreamface
What am I to you?

Diamond or door-knob, sapphire or sawdust,
Champagne or just home brew,
Tell me, tell me, tell me dreamface
What am I to you?

Do I get the booby prize or will I be a hero?
Am I headed for blue skies or is my ceiling zero?

Tulip or turnip, moonbeam or mud-pie
Bank roll or IOU?
Tell me, tell me, tell me dreamface
What am I to you?
