Nursing/Law question: is it abandonment to leave mid-shift after getting fired?

Is the "people get escorted from the premises immediately after being given notice" thing really that universal in the USA?
I've been fired once, and yes, escorted from the premises. At least the firing manager had the courtesy to tell me directly, and a colleague was allowed to escort me out. I wasn't give the opportunity to say anything to my troops, which sucked.

Still, I was in a cohort of twenty others, so that made it somewhat better, even if later I discovered the woman who got the "combined job" used her god given assets to get it. Funny thing was, I quite liked her. I guess it was a merit based selection...
