Ornithamateurs - The Birding Thread

Sweet!! I have never seen one in the wild that I can recall. I'm so glad he put in an appearance for you :) And thank you for sharing!

Welcome, I saw quite a few over a number of days, but none as close as this one. The three Ospreys in the sky at the same time were a bit peeved about it though!

NW US should be on your next trip list!

Welcome again, did you see the gannet chick in there?

I did! They look much better as adults :D There's nothing for scale really, but as I recall the gannet is a pretty big birdie. Larger birds always fascinate me.

I see osprey all the time down at the coast, they are extremely numerous there. I had the pleasure of having one catch a fish and then bring it back to a rock about 15 away from me and feast on it. I still couldn't get a decent shot of it

And I will make it out west as soon as possible. A drive up and down PCH1 is on the list!

Thanks, they are ok for an amateur, there are better ones around of them all but it's nice to know I saw the birds I took pics of!

A wholehearted yes, and thanks for sharing that with us :)

Welcome, Collar, very welcome indeed as appreciation makes it all worthwhile

Gannets are big, wingspan is 6ft+ so the chick has a long way to go! I did try to photograph the osprey and eagle in flight but a blurry blob in a big blue expanse made not for good looking!

Watched a tree creeper in the garden yesterday and tried to capture that scaling the apple tree, when I get chance it's another possibility

PCH1 sounds a blast and looks an amazing route, hope you get there!

SS :rose:

The peacock left one of those lovely soft fluffy feathers on my garden yesterday. I love those much better than the fancy eyed ones.

The cockerel is also moulting a bit, and a wonderful greenish black curled tail feather was in the garden. and a pheasant feather. I thought the latter two with a nother couple would be great in a hat together , but Fire dog pinched them all and turned them into toys, ( she cannot resist a feather.....she should meet collars cats. :) ) every day I pick up destroyed goose and hen feathers around the house.

Then, on the other side of the house....

A dead pigeon.

I didn't photo it for the thread :)

An interesting picture of rural idyll you paint! Thanks for sparing us the dead pigeon, live native birds look so much better :)

American bald eagle

Beautiful. I remember an evening just before dusk, riding in the car out in the country passing by a cornfield. It was in the dead of winter. The snow had a bluish hue, and as I gazed into the field, there was an adult bald eagle, foraging in the snow for kernels of corn. The bird was majestic in its simplicity. It had me spellbound.

I had a flock of birds foraging for food in my back yard the other day. Looked like a murder when I first glanced out the window, then I realized they were too small to be crows. Then looked closer and noticed they had dark green (almost metallic) heads. I've never seen these birds before. They flew off as soon as I tried to sneak out to grab a pic. Looks like they were migrating. Anyone know of the bird I'm speaking of?

What country you in? In the south of the U.K. it could easily be ring necked parakeets, an escape that has bred successfully and flocks are often seen in London parks.

Thanks, they are majestic in flight though on the day even that was overshadowed by the flying plank that is a turkey vulture! Back over here in the uk our biggest bird is white tailed eagle, and it's of a similar size to the bald. There is footage in the web somewhere of one taking a fish from the surface of the sea, quite awe inspiring!

QUOTE=Gianbattista;80275172]ss, do you have any buzzard pictures you could share, I know collar really Wants to see one.
Hi Elle, I haven't got one, it's the usual - see one close when no camera, see one distant when all the clobber is with me. Easy to finds heaps of images on the web I guess, they are not as common for me up here as they are further south and west in the uk

I hate to say this, but Autumn is approaching. The 12+ mile ride in the country to work today was glorious, but very late summer-ish. Low sunlight, bales of straw and bare fields, swallows on the wires and no chiffchaff calls as they have already gone :-(

ok. I sent her the distant bottom of one flying over a hedge, And a duck disappearing too. :).
 the pic.
More please! :D

I am excited. My neighbour and I spoke this morning ( she was checking I had both dogs as one was found locally) and said that the peacock who left the feather in the garden is not THE peacock, but a feral one who has joined the original. I wish the peahens had not been eaten by foxes. :(.

Feral peacocks! Sounds interesting, but if they go wild they take their chances with the wily fox, sad to say!

My ride in was enlivened when I heard alarm calls from sparrows and chaffinches in the hedge, and realised why as the sparrowhawk shot over the hedge to my left, sped off in front of me as I rode and quickly went over the opposite hedge. No other birds were harmed in the making of this, they had all hidden in the hedges!
