Ornithamateurs - The Birding Thread

This morning the dogs put up a good sized flock(might have their own collective noun) of grouse. It was pretty wonderful to see so many. They flew to the far side of the field we were in and landed again.

It's a good thing the dogs are short and had already been distracted by the smell of bunnies. :)

Wow... I didn't realise you had grouse, the heather moors are the habitat and up here they are being shot quite regularly right now, some moors say they have 'bags' of over 3000 birds a day... ouch!

I know, I know. :(. I'll ask the boss to start this weekend. ;).

In fact, I better get the stoves/flues cleaned too!

Collar, I love winter too ( more maybe) , I just...not ready to let go of summer just yet. I love Autumn maybe the best, culinarily certainly.

Psst, I am not so fussed about eating pheasant though. We get gifts of it quite often...:(. It's almost certainly my least favourite meat.

Autumn smells started with the fields being harvested and ploughed again, my bike ride felt very early autumn this morning. Its a favourite season too, the colours, the promise of fresh early mornings, all somehow very reassuring that the cycle continues

From the holidays...

A Steller's Jay I believe!!

I saw a murder yesterday :D
Unless it was ravens... Now I don't know!
I do believe it's crows in these parts, though.

Nice Stellar Jay! In Texas we have scrub jays. I think they are the most beautiful jay, personally.

Nice, your pic Collar?

Ravens in the UK are the biggest of five corvids we have - rooks, crows and jackdaws are common and the rare one is a chough - red legs and beak and almost extinct!

Hope you are having fun in all that heat :-(

Not my pic, just snagged it off the internet.

I would have figured magpies belonged in that group for some reason. I wish we had them here. I would love to see one... And I actually snuck up north for a few weeks :D It's still hot, but I'm no longer in hell!

Hey, magpies do fall under the group I think, but over here they refer to the main corvids as those five. The US has an azure winged magpie I think? Didn't see one when I was there just the Steller's jay and several bald eagle, five Ospreys, couple of golden eagle and a turkey vulture or two...

North as in not TX? How far, how much cooler??

I figured they did because of the shape of their beaks. I have never seen a blue winged magpie! I shall go and buy blue winged magpie blend feed tomorrow :D

Not in Texas anymore, no. Quite north! New Yorkish :) But it's no cooler during the day :(

Hey, glad to hear the heat of the night at least is improving!

At last a chance to post a couple of pics... more gannets first!
