I actually like the dunnock! I had never heard of them before. I like the mottled appearance, it reminds me of my kitties :D

And of course the turn.. black and white, beautiful! And the body shape, he (she?) just looks built to fly long distances.

The Shag looks like a sizeable bird, I haven't heard of those either. A water/coastal bird, I'm guessing from the look of it. And from the sound of it... Oh, yeah. Whoops! No innuendo, nearly forgot :p

All lovely pics, Skinny. Thanks so much!! :)

Very welcome Collar, glad they appeal. The arctic term is amazing, going from the northern part of the U.K. to the Antarctic and back each year apparently.

A morning with garden birds galore, shame I have no camera right now, thrush, starling, blackbird, various finches, sparrows and crows, all sorts!

Great pictures. :)

Now I am going to go and reevaluate my birds and see which I have!

Glad you like them, the illustrated books help but sometimes a real pic is better. Not that these and the others are great but they might help separate each of the lbj's from each other!

Enjoy your day, hope it's sunny with you :)

Real pictures are much better!

Yes, it's lovely here, I have just come in for a siesta, because I don't want too much sun, little guy dog was hiding in the shade, so he was thrilled we came in. :D. New girl was happy to sunbathe though.

Clouding over in time for me to stop gardening and go for a bike ride, nerdy man needs another 19 miles to reach a round number for the end of July! Hope the sun still shines with you :)

Gannet... amazing birds

I have only ever seen them to the accompaniment of Sir David Attenborough in the background, while they gulp down some other bird's chicks whole

Amazing how? They look quite enormous... it's one of the reasons I like water birds, they are always bigger! We have both brown and white pelicans here, the latter with a 6' wing span. Big bird :)

Gannets have about 6' wings on too, they fold their wings back and dive into the sea from a fair height, some amazing footage of them almost swimming after fish before surfacing. Generally live on islands but we have a huge mainland colony in Yorkshire, England's only one!

That is so very cool  :) I may have said I catch the whooping cranes every year? Feeling so very fortunate to live close enough to see them. Ok, forget feeling fortunate, I delight in it :D So I can relate! Brown pelicans tuck and dive as you describe as well, and I adore watching them!

I always feel so fortunate in spotting the anomalous bird. It should be an omen of good fortune, I think :)

I saw innumerable Pelicans at the beach today....i love watching them crash into the water. The cloud formation so well.

This morning the dogs put up a good sized flock(might have their own collective noun) of grouse. It was pretty wonderful to see so many. They flew to the far side of the field we were in and landed again.

It's a good thing the dogs are short and had already been distracted by the smell of bunnies. :)

Pack, covey or brace, supposedly.
Though brace just makes me hungry, which seems wrong in this instance :D

They are yummy. But I like having them live here more.

Edit: also, the geese are flying already. It's that time of year where start saying" surely it's too early for this"

We have no wood chopped for winter.

I agree. When I was younger, I hunted field birds. Pheasant, grouse, quail. Waterfowl too, but it's been a few years.

We've got Orioles again. They're travelling back through for the second time, heading back south.

I have been splitting up a maple that came down in the spring. It's not entirely dry, but being split will help. I also have two stacks that are left from last year to burn first. You better get going, the leaves will be falling in a month and cold weather will be arriving soon after.

Just a cute photo from the web - I have no idea what they are
