I'm curious.

What would you guys suggest be the procedure for a force in orbit to take a target like an enclosed colony like either on the moon or Mars on the surface of a planet? What would be the defenses they'd have to overcome.

Would it be landing a ground force via transports that make entry into the atmosphere to infiltrate and clear the colony room by room, or use low orbit drop ships to use high altitude paratroopers to do it?

That all depends on what your target is Veroe.

What type of Colony are we talking about?
Is it military or Civilian?
What are your goals?

Good questions, AMC

Let's say both, a fully grown enclosed colony with civilian areas and millitary ones.

As for goals let's make it somewhat simple...Invasion, to destabilize and pacify enemy millitary resistance, to access and control the colony's civilian systems, and subjugate the colonists in order to annex the colony as a whole intact under new management.

Well if we're talking about Gundam.
Then you'd have at least 3 battleships(Salamis class if we're talking One Year War Tech)
A MS Carrier and probably a full defense force worth of MS(30 or so MS for a normal colony I think)
And probably a scouting force of some kinda a extra 3-9MS and maybe some type of transport.
MS types will mostly be 2/3rds normal MS(GM, Ginn, Zaku IIs, ect.)
And the other 1/3rd will be supprt MS like Guntanks or Guncannons.
Also keep in mind they most likely have a unknown amount of support vehicles as well.(Tanks, VTOL, Defense guns and such too)

Now the other question is what your attacking with.
A full blown fleet would take this type of defense force out with no more then say 5-10% losses on your end.
A spec. ops team(Think Crossbone Vagaurd group in the start of F91) could probably take it out no problem as well.
As long as you have well to highly trained pilots your probably good.
Earth Federation Space Forces(EFSF) are not much of a threat to well trained pilots.
Though there is always the off chance a ship/group/fleet is docked for repairs or resupply too.
Or that the colony is holding some type of Proto type units.
A Gundam could rune your day very quickly.
It also depends on how your geared to fight.
Are your MS/Fighters geared for fighting inside a colony?
Also are you worried about collateral damage/s?

Best plan would be to try to catch them off guard and shoot down any ships in the docks first.
Or at the very least try to pin them down in the dock area and sneak a team through some other way.
Once the battle starts civilians will be moved to shelters and what not.
And depending on the enemy command they might also divert some MS to guard them.
Really baring any Gundam class Mobile Suits or Aces or Mobile Armors a normal colony isn't too hard to take over if you have a sizable force or a highly trained team to go in and get the job done.

If we're not talking Gundam tech I have no clue really.
It would depend on size and shape of the colony and what type of weapons and defense setups they use.
Robotech would probably fall close to Gundam as well.
Full Metal Panic would probably have about 15% less units total(for both sides I'd guess) and a Lambda Driver would either end your attack quickly or provide a edge or if on both sides the winner of that fight would determine the outcome of the battle.

A specialized mobile suit or mobile armor could also ruin your day very quickly. Even one would spell bad news. There's also the possibility of point defense systems such as hypermag railguns, missile arrays, plasma emitters, and so on. Given the right gunnery crews, you'd have a hard time taking out such installations. And if there are any retired mobile suit pilots on the station, you're probably best to target something less populated.

Some of those weapons are high end Gundam though.
Also a outlaying colony isn't likely to have such weapons on hand.
But yeah your and I did point out a Gundam Class MS or a MA could be docked there.(Take Side 7 at the start of Mobile Suit Gundam as a example)

However it's unlikely that Veroe would come up against a special unit of any kind.
Unless he's trying to take over a key area in prep for invading earth.
But at that point he'd have to worry about the EFSF would then dispatch a fleet or task force to deal with him.

There's also the possibility of a very very paranoid colony that focused heavily on defense systems.

Yeah but out of all the colonies it's unlikely to find one.
But on that note he could also run across a colony controlled by say a Neo Zeon controlled colony.

Yeah. Taking on Neo Zeon without a few Gundams is a BAD idea.

Depends on if they are as powerful as Haman or Char's Neo Zeon.
But I'm not sure the Sleeves from Unicorn might not be as powerful as they MS have a lot of older MS.

There are, of course, other possibilities. Those are only two of a large number of multiverses that use space colonies

I wasn't thinking gundam tech...

Let me clarify.
This is something I'm mulling over for my Scifi Space opera thread idea as an exciting starting point. So it would be either a lunar colony or martian colony. Something like the colony compound in Aliens or the Martian colony in Total Recall not a space colony like in Gundam....though now that you mention it posing the start of the thread in a space colony isn't a bad idea-something closer to babylon 5 than the colonies in Gundam though.

...still debating whether or not to put in mecha or more conventional scifi millitary tropes space marines and starfighters...though the mechs would be closer to Mech warrior than Gundam I think.

I just thought since you two are fairly smart military scifi thinkers, maybe you guys can offer a clearer perspective on the invaders' modis operandii.

You're thinking something more like a planetary colony then, not a space colony.

If you're talking Mech Warrior, you'd want something like Robotech's Mars Base colony, I think.

Yeah now you got it, but with a plot twist I was planning on it might work better in a huge space station.

Hmmm...well, one of the battlefields in Dynasty Warriors Gundam is the inside of an asteroid that's been turned into some sort of mining base.

Hmm...An asteroid mining operation is perfect for the kind of colony I was thinking of.

That's a brilliant idea Razor, I'll definitely use that.

Maybe once a planetoid rich in minerals that in that particular solar system's infancy strayed between two gas giants and the tidal stress from the two gravitational sources shattered it into a tight dense asteroid belt. Yeah that's a great idea.

You're welcome.

Which game?
1, 2 or 3?

I'd guess your talking about the Axis missions if 1 or maybe 2.

And to continue some input from myself on the story idea for Veroe.
I'd guess a small mining outpost would have no more then 50 men(tops)
A pair of heavy fire power in the way of small mecha or light tanks.
The bigger problem would be landing.
A mining outpost would hold some value and I'd think at a min you'd be talking about 4AA guns/AA mission launchers(Ground based)
Or 8-24 for a stand alone asteroid mining base.
As a side note a stand alone mining base on a large enough chunk of rock might even have a light Frigate(Up to a med Frigate or at the very worst a light battleship)
Either way getting close is more of a problem unless you have a way to sneak in.
Only other thing to note is unless your attacking a outlaying mining operation.
It is likely you will also encounter automated defense systems of some kind once you breach the outside defenses.

Then like before there are always those times when a inspection might be going on drawing more units and personnel.
Cargo shipments(This could be the way in if your not being escorted) and or resupply if the base if the ship is in need of such things for some reason(unlikely but could happen)
As far as once your troops hit dirt(so to speak) then you could be dealing with one of a few likely options.
A: Rookies wet behind the ears and little threat to your forces.
B: Normal rotating shifts of personnel(Most likely)
C: Misfits reassigned to keep them from causing trouble on ships or what not and could pose a great Threat to your ground forces.
D: The most unlikely outcome being that the mining base is a Special Operations base and even the miners are trained to kill whole groups of men with out thinking and with out regret of any kind.
E: Zombies in Space!
F: Aliens have taken control of said base and your targets are no longer human.

ZZ and Haman's Qubeley, actually. Both have that mission available.
