Poetry and Lyrics

I'm going somewhere completely different

Stevie Wonder

My Cherie Amour

My Cherie Amour

La la la la la la, La la la la la la

My cherie amour, lovely as a summer day
My cherie amour, distant as the milky way
My cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore
You're the only girl my heart beats for
How I wish that you were mine

In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street
I've been near you, but you never noticed me
My cherie amour, won't you tell me how could you ignore
That behind that little smile I wore
How I wish that you were mine

La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la la la, La la la la la la

Maybe someday, you'll see my face amoung the crowd
Maybe someday, I'll share your little distant cloud
Oh, cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore
You're the only girl my heart beats for
How I wish that you were mine

La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la la la, La la la la la la

I have a good friend whose hubby (a recording engineer) won a grammy a few years back. They went to a party afterward where she somehow ended up hanging out with Stevie Wonder, getting him food and stuff. She said "He's a great guy, but man can he put the chow away." LOL!

And for the record, I adore Stevie too.

Joe Cocker

as only he could make so simple a lyric, so wonderful.

You are so beautiful

You are so beautiful
To me
You are so beautiful
To me
Can't you see

You're everything I hoped for
You're everything I need
You are so beautiful to me
You are so beautiful to me

You are so beautiful
To me
Can't you see
You're everything I hoped for
You're every, everything I need
You are so beautiful to me

My Favorite JB lyric

Here it is. I found it. :)

I Thought I Was a Child
Jackson Browne

It's such a clever innocence with which you do your sorcery
As if somehow the years just bow and let that young girl go free
I thought I was a child until you turned and smiled
I thought I knew where I was going until I heard your laughter flowing
And came upon the wisdom in your eyes
Surprise--

I've spent my whole life running 'round
Chasing songs from town to town
Thinking I'd be free so long as I never let love slow me down
So lonely and so wild until you turned and smiled
By now I should have long been gone
But here I am still looking on
As if I didn't know which way to run

It's such a clever innocence with which you show myself to me
As if you know how it feels to never be who you wanted to be
I thought I was a child until you turned and smiled
I thought that I was free but I'm just one more prisoner of time
Alone within the boundaries of my mind
I thought I was a child

And I know you like this one....

Woman

John boy

Woman
John Lennon

Woman I can hardly express,
My mixed emotion at my thoughtlessness,
After all I'm forever in your debt,
And woman I will try express,
My inner feelings and thankfullness,
For showing me the meaning of succsess,
oooh well, well,
oooh well, well,

Woman I know you understand
The little child inside the man,
Please remember my life is in your hands,
And woman hold me close to your heart,
However, distant don't keep us apart,
After all it is written in the stars,
oooh well, well,
oooh well, well,

Woman please let me explain,
I never mean(t) to cause you sorrow or pain,
So let me tell you again and again and again,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah)....

Here's one from the way back machine

The Young Rascals

I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore

Pam Sawyer - Lori Burton)
(Yeah) I admit you got the biggest brown eyes
And you know how to part your lips to tantalize, sure
(Yeah) You can get any man you want goin' and you do it
And don't say you don't know you do
Chorus:
Well, baby, I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore
I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore
So quit it
Bridge:
I love you, I love you, I do, little girl
But you ain't gonna cheat on me
I need you, I need you, I [2: really] do, girl
Choose, is it him or me (is it him or me)
Verse 2:
(Yeah) Just 'cause I ain't been sayin' it, girl
You should be ashamed of what I've been seein' - bad
(Yeah) You better watch your step or, girl
You can bet you're gonna lose the best thing you ever had
[repeat chorus]
[repeat bridge]
Coda:
I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore [repeat to fade]

He loved that woman so much....

Well she had about a million reasons to love him, but that song is a perfect example of why.

Have you ever heard the Lennon cd Wonsuponatime? It's all studio stuff from fooling around sessions and the music is raw and even more honest-sounding than usual. Lots of his most famous songs are on there and it's a revelation to hear them that way. ee has it--I'll burn you a copy this weekend--I'm still looking for that damn Sons cd lol.

One More

Grateful Dead
Attics of My Life

In the attics of my life, full of cloudy dreams unreal.
Full of tastes no tongue can know, and lights no eyes can see.
When there was no ear to hear, you sang to me.

I have spent my life seeking all that's still unsung.
Bent my ear to hear the tune, and closed my eyes to see.
When there were no strings to play, you played to me.

In the book of love's own dream, where all the print is blood.
Where all the pages are my days, and all the lights grow old.
When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me, you flew to me.

In the secret space of dreams, where I dreaming lay amazed.
When the secrets all are told, and the petals all unfold.
When there was no dream of mine, you dreamed of me.

and now it's sleepy time. :)

Golden slumbers tung and the rest of you poets.

Thank you Ange! I loved Bonnies version, but Leo Kottke's voice somehow really made this for me.

Louise

Well they all said Louise was not half bad
It was written on the walls and window shades
And how she'd act the little girl
A deceiver, don't believe her that's her trade
Sometimes a bottle of perfume,
Flowers and maybe some lace
Men brought Louise ten cent trinkets
Their intentions were easily traced
Yes and everybody knew at times she cried
But women like Louise they get by

Well everybody thought it kind of sad
When they found Louise in her room
They'd always put her down below their kind
Still some cried when she died this afternoon
Lousie rode home on the mail train
Somewhere to the south I heard it said
Too bad it ended so ugly,
Too bad she had to go this way
Ah but the wind is blowing cold tonight
So good night Louise, good night

Hey Tung????

Do you know this band? I bet you'd really like them. They're alternative country rock.

Drift
The Hangdogs

Christmas came to a little town
And the kids came home and bought the folks a round
And the folks went home, and the kids hung out
Like they do and like they've always done

And in that flow of booze into which we'd swum
It didn't matter one bit from whence we'd come
Cause I knew when I saw you we'd both come from under
The bridge under which all waters run

Christie, I did you wrong I know
Now it just seems so long ago
Seems I've loved and lost and drunk it off
A thousand times since then
And Christie, I'm as scared as you
And I'm lost out on that river too
Maybe someday we'd both do a whole lot worse
than to drift across each other again

So we caught up on the last few years
The triumphs lost, and the bitter tears
Seems the good slips through the cracks of age
And the bad hangs round to humble you

We talked until they shut it down
Then we walked all through that snow-glazed town
And underneath the same old bone-white moon
We kissed as if our love was new

Christie, I did you wrong I know
Now it just seems so long ago
Seems I've loved and lost and drunk it off
A thousand times since then
And Christie, I'm as scared as you
And I'm lost out on that river too
Maybe someday we'd both do a whole lot worse
than to drift across each other again

Everyone here always laughs at me; when we clean house I put on the oldies and for every song I have a memory! My grandaughter asked me what song I remembered the most and/or affected my life and I said there were zillions- I couldn't name just one. But just as I was goin to sleep last night this song lodged in my head. It's probably my all time favorite, and while I doubt I modeled my life on this one tune, it sure seemed to work out as if I did!

We'll Sing In The Sunshine
by Gale Garnett

We'll sing in the sunshine,
We'll laugh every day,
We'll sing in the sunshine,
Then I'll be on my way.

I will never love you,
The cost of love's too dear.
But though I'll never love you,
I'll stay with you one year.

And we can sing in the sunshine,
We'll laugh everyday,
We'll sing in the sunshine,
Then I'll be on my way.

I'll sing to you each morning,
I'll kiss you every night.
But darlin' don't cling to me,
I'll soon be out of sight.

But we can sing in the sunshine,
We'll laugh everyday,
We'll sing in the sunshine,
Then I'll be on my way.

My daddy he once told me,
"Hey, don't you love you any man.
Just take what they may give you,
And give but what you can."

And you can sing in the sunshine,
You'll laugh everyday,
You'll sing in the sunshine,
Then be on your way.

And when a year has ended,
And I have gone away,
You'll often speak about me,
And this is what you'll say:

We sang in the sunshine,
You know we laughed everyday,
We sang in the sunshine,
Then she went on her way.

mmmm... The memories are flooding thru me right now!!

(am I sounding really sappy and old?? LOL) :p

Bowie

Changes
David Bowie

I still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't tell t hem to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Changes are taking the pace I'm going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time

I'm not much of a Bowie fan--I know he's good, but I just don't much care for his sound, but I love that song (and Fame and Young Americans). I dunno--maybe I am a fan, lol.

Have a good day, my friend.

Pat's gorgeous poem in the passion thread made me think of this Laura Nyro song. It's one of her best.

December's Boudoir

Kisses from you in the flames of December's boudoir,
They fill me like melons,
Touch me with chivalry;

Truly I know, truly I know who you are,
December will bear our affair,

Running on streets of delight and Decemberry ice,
They'll see me; I'm ageless,
Loving you timelessly,

Love-colored soul, love-colored soul kissing spice,

Yes, my love, I take my coffee in the morning,
And all your love,
A spoonful or so make us grow,

Mama was clever, my mama was clever,
And my daddy loved her forever;

Forever!

Kisses from you I'll remember,
Kisses from you in the flames of December,
Kisses from you, true they are,
Kisses from you in the flames of December's boudoir;

Oh, mainstream marzipan sweet,
Baking out in December heat.

(god she was an amazing poet--and what a voice)

More Bowie

Rock 'N' Roll Suicide

(David Bowie)

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Ohhh, you're a rock 'n' roll suicide

You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don't eat when you've lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you're a rock 'n' roll suicide

Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don't let the sun blast your shadow
Don't let the milk float ride your mind
They're so natural - religiously unkind

Oh no love! you're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if I could only make you care
Oh no love! you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter when or where you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain
You're not alone

Just turn on with me and you're not alone
Let's turn on with me and you're not alone
Let's turn on and be not alone
Gimme your hands 'cos you're wonderful
Gimme your hands 'cos you're wonderful
Oh gimme your hands

John Hiatt

Walk On by John Hiatt

Someone called out to you
and it sounded just like crying.
On a street where nobody
even knows your name,
your mind was getting high
on the sweet air
as your spirit was flying,
steam rising from the sidewalks
of New Orleans after an evening rain.

And it only made the heat
feel like it was walking even closer
as you headed up St. Charles
to catch a streetcar named Desire,
young couple struggling in the doorway
like he was trying to force her.

In the distance you swore
you could hear them open fire,
tires squealing in the distance
as you heard them open fire.

Walk on.
Don’t look back.
Don’t ask questions,
don’t you try to understand.
Walk on, straight back down
to your hotel room,
where she lies waiting for her man

You’re so afraid you might be losing love
that is makes you worry
and you wonder if she’s ever seen this
kind of fear in you.
And you think of that young couple
in the doorway,
and it makes you hurry.

You wonder what kind of fear
they might be living through.

You wonder if
they saw that fear in you.

Old songs are precious

And to hear Mr. Joe Williams sing this is delicious.

When Sunny Gets Blue
Nat King Cole

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy,
Then the rain begins to fall, pitter-patter, pitter-patter,
Love is gone, what can matter, no sweet lover man comes to call.

When Sunny gets blue, she breaths a sigh of sadness,
Like the wind that stirs the trees,
Wind that sets the leaves to swaying
Like some violin is playing strange and haunting melodies.

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile,
That's how she got her name.
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style,
Somehow she's not the same.

Memories will fade, pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

sigh...

:)

THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU
Ray Noble (but listen to Billie Holiday sing it)

The very thought of you
And I forget to do
Those little ordinary things
That everyone ought to do

I'm livin' in a kind of a daydream
I'm happy as a queen
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything

The mere idea of you
The longing here for you
You'll never know
How slow the moments go
Till I am near to you

I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you,
The very thought of you, my love
