You Go to My Head
Billie holiday

You go to my head
You linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round
In my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne

You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two

The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea casts a spell over me
Still I say to myself
Get ahold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be

You go to my head with a smile
That makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes

Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance
In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head

Frank Sinatra

You Go to my Head reminded me of this....

I've Got You Under My Skin

I’ve got you under my skin
I’ve got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart, that you’re really a part of me
I’ve got you under my skin

I’ve tried so not to give in
I’ve said to myself this affair never will go so well
But why should I try to resist, when baby will I know than well
That I’ve got you under my skin

I’d sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear

Don’t you know you fool, you never can win
Use your mentality, wake up to reality
But each time I do, just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
’cause I’ve got you under my skin

One more Sinatra

I love the way Frank Sinatra phrases his music...
it's really great interpretation.....
that's what makes the greats I think

anyway......this song is so much a period piece...almost silly...but I can hear him singing it...and want to go with him...martini in hand....:)

Come Fly with Me
(cahn/van heusen)

Come fly with me let's fly, let's fly away
If you can use some exotic booze there's a bar in far Bombay
Come fly with me let's fly, let's fly away

Come fly with me let's float down to Peru
In llamaland there's a one man band and he'll toot his flute for you
Come fly with me let's take off in the blue

Once I get you up there where the air is rarified
We'll just glide starry eyed
Once I get you up there I'll be holding you so near
You may hear the angels cheer because we're together.

Weather-wise it's such a lovely day
Just say the words and we'll beat those birds down to Acapulco bay
It's perfect for a flying honeymoon they say
So come fly with me let's fly, let's fly away

(instrumental)

Once I get you up there where the air is rarified
We'll just glide starry eyed
Once I get you up there I'll be holding you so near
You may hear all the angels cheer because we're together

Weather-wise it's such a lovely day
You just say those words and we'll beat those birds down to Acapulco bay
It's so perfect for a flying honeymoon they say
Come fly with me let's fly, let's fly
Pack up! let's fly away

On a different note...

George Harrison

Isn't It a Pity

Isn't it a pity
Now, isn't it a shame
How we break each other's hearts
And cause each other pain
How we take each other's love
Without thinking anymore
Forgetting to give back
Isn't it a pity

Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity

Isn't it a pity
Isn't is a shame
How we break each other's hearts
And cause each other pain
How we take each other's love
Without thinking anymore
Forgetting to give back
Isn't it a pity

Forgetting to give back
Isn't it a pity
Forgetting to give back
Now, isn't it a pity

(6 times, fade the 6th:)
What a pity
What a pity, pity, pity
What a pity
What a pity, pity, pity

And this one...

Here Comes the Sun

Here comes the sun (Du du du du)
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright

Little darling
It's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
It feels like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun (Du du du du)
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright

Little darling
The smiles returning to the faces
Little darling
It seems like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes (five times)

Little darling
I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling
It seems like years since it's been clear

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright

Here comes the sun (Du du du du)
Here comes the sun
It's alright
It's alright

Lady Sings the Blues
Billie Holiday

Lady sings the blues
She’s got them bad
She feels so sad
Wants the world to know
Just what the blues is all about

Lady sings the blues
She tells her side
Nothing to hide
Now the world will now
Just what the blues is all about

The blues ain’t nothing but a pain in your heart
When you get a bad start
When you and your man have to part
I ain’t gonna just sit around and cry
And now I won’t die
Because I love him

Lady sings the blues
She’s got ’em bad
She feels so sad
The world will know
She’s never gonna sing them no more

No more

"Touch of Grey"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission

Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by number morning sky
Looks so phony

Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains
I don't care 'cause
It's all right

I will get by / I will get by
I will get by / I will survive

I see you've got your list out
Say your piece and get out
Yes I get the gist of it
but it's all right

Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining's got a
Touch of grey

I will get by / I will get by
I will get by / I will survive

It's a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the C's
The ABC's we all must face
And try to keep a little grace

It's a lesson to me
The deltas and the east and the freeze
The ABC's we all think of
Try to give a little love.

I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears
but it's all right.

Cows giving kerosene
Kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene
but it's all right

I will get by / I will get by
I will get by / I will survive

The shoe is on the hand it fits
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit
causeit's all right.

Oh well a Touch Of Grey
Kind of suits you anyway.
That was all I had to say
It's all right.

I will get by / I will get by
I will get by / I will survive
We will get by / We will get by
We will get by / We will survive

The Bewlay Brothers
by David Bowie

And so the story goes they wore the clothes
They said the things to make it seem improbable
The whale of a lie like they hope it was
And the Goodmen Tomorrow
Had their feet in the wallow
And their heads of Brawn were nicer shorn
And how they bought their positions with saccharin and trust
And the world was asleep to our latent fuss
Sighing, the swirl through the streets
Like the crust of the sun
The Bewlay Brothers
In our Wings that Bark
Flashing teeth of Brass
Standing tall in the dark
Oh, And we were Gone
Hanging out with your Dwarf Men
We were so turned on
By your lack of conclusions

I was Stone and he was Wax
So he could scream, and still relax, unbelievable
And we frightened the small children away
And our talk was old and dust would flow
Thru our veins and Lo! it was midnight
Back o' the kitchen door
Like the grim face on the Cathedral floor
And the solid book we wrote
Cannot be found today

And it was Stalking time for the Moonboys
The Bewlay Brothers
With our backs on the arch
In the Devil-may-be-here
But He can't sing about that
Oh, And we were Gone
Real Cool Traders
We were so Turned On
You thought we were Fakers

Now the dress is hung, the ticket pawned
The Factor Max that proved the fact
Is melted down
And woven on the edging of my pillow
Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks
He could be dead, He could be not
He could be You
He's Chameleon, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature
"Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky"
The Bewlay Brothers
In the feeble and the Bad
The Bewlay Brothers
In the Blessed and Cold
In the Crutch-hungry Dark
Was where we flayed our Mark
Oh, and we were Gone
Kings of Oblivion
We were so Turned On
In the Mind-Warp Pavilion

Lay me place and bake me Pie
I'm starving for me Gravy
Leave my shoes, and door unlocked
I might just slip away

Just for the Day, Hey!
Please come Away, Hey! (repeat ad inf.)

A Rainy Night in Soho

The Pogues:

I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell

I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
But there's a light I hold before me
And you're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the first time
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

At This Point in My Life
Tracy Chapman

Done so many things wrong
I don't know if I can do right
Oh I, Oh I've
Done so many things wrong
I don't know if I can do right

At this point in my life

I've done so many things wrong
I don't know if I can do right
If you put your trust in me
I hope I won't let you down
If you give me a chance I'll try

You see it's been a hard road
the road I'm traveling on
And if I take your hand
I might lead you down the path to ruin
I've had a hard life
I'm just saying it so you'll understand
That right now, right now,
I'm doing the best I can

At this point in my life
At this point in my life

Although I've mostly walked in shadows
I'm still searching for the light
Won't you put your faith in me
We both know that's what matters
If you give me a chance I'll try
You see I've been climbing stairs
but mostly stumbling down
I've been reaching high
always losing ground
You see I've been reaching high
but always losing ground
You see I've conquered hills
but I still have mountains to climb
And right now right now
I'm doing the best I can

At this point in my life

Before we take a step
Before we walk down that path
Before I make any promises
Before you have regrets
Before we talk commitment
Let me tell you of my past
All I've seen and all I've done
The things I'd like to forget

At this point in my life
At this point in my life

I'd like to live as if only love mattered
As if redemption was in sight
As if the search to live honestly
Is all that anyone needs
No matter if you find it

You see when I've touched the sky
The earth's gravity has pulled me down
But now I've reconciled that in this world
Birds and angels get the wings to fly

If you can believe in this heart of mine
If you can give it a try
Then I'll reach inside and find and give you
All the sweetness that I have
At this point in my life
At this point in my life

Happy Birthday Johnny

John Lennon would have been 64 today. :)

Dear Prudence

Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play.
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day.
The sun is up, the sky is blue.
It’s beautiful and so are you.
Dear Prudence won’t you come out to play?

Dear Prudence open up your eyes.
Dear Prudence see the sunny skies.
The wind is low the birds will sing
That you are part of everything.
Dear Prudence won’t you open up your eyes?

Look around round
Look around round round
Look around.

Dear Prudence let me see you smile.
Dear Prudence like a little child.
The clouds will be a daisy chain.
So let me see you smile again.
Dear Prudence won’t you let me see you smile?

I'm Only Sleeping
(Ok, Lennon-McCartney, but you know this is a John song. I adore this song.)

When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I’m still yawning.
When I’m in the middle of a dream,
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream),
Please don’t wake me, no, don’t shake me,
Leave me where I am, I’m only sleeping.

Everybody seems to think I’m lazy.
I don’t mind, I think they’re crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed,
Till they find there’s no need (there’s no need),
Please don’t spoil my day, I’m miles away,
And after all, I’m only sleeping.

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window,
Taking my time, lying there and staring at the ceiling,
Waiting for a sleepy feeling.
Please don’t spoil my day, I’m miles away,
And after all, I’m only sleeping.
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window,
Taking my time.

When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I’m still yawning.
When I’m in the middle of a dream,
Staying in bed, float up stream (float up stream),
Please don’t wake me, no, don’t shake me,
Leave me where I am, I’m only sleeping.

Revolution
Lennon-McCartney (but John wrote it, darnit)

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
Tou tell me that it’s evolution,
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
But when you talk about destruction,
Don’t you know that you can count me out.
Don’t you know it’s going to be alright,
Alright, alright.

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We’d all love to see the plan.
You ask me for a contribution,
Well, you know
We’re doing what we can.
But if you want money for people with minds that hate,
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait.
Don’t you know it’s going to be alright,
Alright, alright.

You say you’ll change a constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head.
You tell me it’s the institution,
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead.
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow.
Don’t you know it’s going to be alright,
Alright, alright.

Alright, alright.
Alright, alright.
Alright, alright.
Well alright!

Bless You- John Lennon

Bless you wherever you are
Windswept child on a shooting star
Restless Spirits depart
Still we're deep in each other's hearts

Some people say it's over
Now that we spread our wings
But we know better darling
The hollow ring is only last year's echo

Bless you whoever you are
Holding her now
Be warm and kind hearted
And remember though love is strange
Now and forever our love will remain

The Late Great Johnny Ace
Paul Simon

I was reading a magazine
And thinking of a rock and roll song
The year was nineteen fifty-four
And I hadn't been playing that long
When a man came on the radio
And this is what he said
He said I hate to break it to his fans
But Johnny Ace is dead,
yeah, yeah, yeah

Well, I really wasn't
Such a Johnny Ace fan
But I felt bad all the same
So I sent away for his photograph
And I waited till it came
It came all the way from Texas
With a sad and simple face
And they signed it on the bottom
From the Late Great Johnny Ace,
yeah, yeah, yeah

It was the year of The Beatles
It was the year of The Stones
It was nineteen sixty-four
I was living in London
With the girl from the summer before

It was the year of The Beatles
It was the year of The Stones
A year after J.F.K.
We were staying up all night
And giving the days away

And the music was flowing amazing
And blowing my way

On a cold December evening
I was walking through the Christmas tide
When a stranger came up and asked me
If I'd heard John Lennon had died
And the two of us went to this bar
And we stayed to close the place
And every song we played
Was for The Late Great Johnny Ace,
yeah, yeah, yeah

In a Halloween mood...

ROLAND THE HEADLESS THOMPSON GUNNER
by Warren Zevon

Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Through sixty-six and seven they fought the Congo war
Fingers on their triggers, knee-deep in gore
For days and nights they battled the Bantu to their knees
They killed to earn their living and to help out the Congolese

Roland the Thompson gunner...

His comrades fought beside him - Van Owen and the rest
But of all the Thompson gunners Roland was the best
So the CIA decided they wanted Roland dead
That son-of-a-bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head

Roland the headless Thompson gunner
(Time, time, time
For another peaceful war)
Norway's bravest son
(But time stands still for Roland
'Til he evens up the score)
They can still see his headless body stalking through the night
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun

Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg

Roland the headless Thompson gunner...

The eternal Thompson gunner, still wandering through the night
Now it's ten years later but he still keeps up the fight
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine and Berkeley
Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland's Thompson gun
And bought it

Mean to Me

I forget who wrote it, but I heard Nell Carter sing it in the most beautiful, plaintive way once, and I really like it. I remembered it tonight cause I'm using part of it in a story I'm writing. :)

You're mean to me.
Why must you be mean to me?
Gee, honey, it seems to me
You love to see me cryin'

I don't know why
I stay home each night
When you say you'll phone.
You don't, and I'm left alone,
Singin the blues and sighin'.

You treat me coldly each day in the year,
You always scold me
Whenever somebody is near, dear,

It must be great fun to be mean to me.
You shouldn't, for can't you see
What you mean to me?

Oh and Lester and Billie recorded it. :D

John Lennon- better late than never

Listened to a John Lennon celebration while in Chicago...and heard this one I hadn't thought of in a long time...

She Said, She Said

She said I know what it’s like to be dead
I know what it is to be sad
And she’s making me feel like I’ve never been born.

I said who put all those things in your hair
Things that ake me feel that I’m mad
And you’re making me feel like I’ve never been born.

She said you don’t understand what I said
I said no, no, no, you’re wrong
When I was a boy everything was right
Everything was right

I said even though you know what you know
I know that I’m ready to leave
’cause you’re making me feel like I’ve never been born.

She said you don’t understand what I said
I said no, no, no, you’re wrong
When I was a boy everything was right
Everything was right

I said even though you know what you know
I know that I’m ready to leave
’cause you’re making me feel like I’ve never been born.

I know what it is to be sad...

I miss him, too. Almost twenty-four years gone. Yikes.

You know, I'm sure, that he wrote it about an acid trip conversation he had with Peter Fonda.

And welcome back.

... by an Englishman called Paul Weller.

A police car and a screaming siren -
A pnuematic drill and ripped up concrete -
A baby waiting and stray dog howling -
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking -
that's entertainment.

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots -
An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth -
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat -
Lights going out and a kick in the balls -

That's entertainment.

Days of speed and slow time Mondays -
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday -
Watching the news and not eating your tea -
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls -

That's entertainment.

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning -
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol -
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard -
Watching the telly and thinking about your holidays -

That's entertainment.

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes -
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume -
A hot summers' day and sticky black tarmac -
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were faraway -

That's entertainment.

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight -
Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude -
Getting a cab and travelling on buses -
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs -

That's entertainment.

The Decembrists

Grace Cathedral Hill

Grace Cathedral hill, all
wrapped in borns of setting sun,
all dust and stone and moribund.
I paid 25 cents to light
a little white candle
for a New Year’s Day,

I sat and watched it burn away,
turned and weaved through slow decay.
We were both a little hungry
so we went to get a part of……

Down the Height St. pier,
the light was slight and disappeared,
the air, it stunk of fish and beer.
We heard a superman trumpet
play the national anthem.

The world may be long for you,
but it will never belong to you,
but on a motorbike
when all the city lights
blind your eyes tonight,
are you feeling better now?

Are you feeling better
now?

Somewhere to greet the year,
your eyes all bright
and brimmed with tears,
the pilgrims’ pills
and tourists’ fears,
I sing “53 Bucks” to buy
a brand new halo,

sweet on a green-eyed girl,
all fiery Irish,
clipped and pearled,
all brine and piss and vinegar.

I paid 25 cents to light
a little white candle.

The world may be long for you,
but it will never belong to you,
but on a motorbike
when all the city lights
blind your eyes tonight,
are you feeling better now?

Are you feeling better
now?

Nice to see you Tara
