Poetry and Lyrics

Strawberry Flats
-- Bill Payne, Lowell George

Ripped off and run out of town
Had my guitar burned when I was clownin'
Haven't slept in a bed for a week
And my shoes feel like they're part of my feet
Let me come down where I won't be a bother to no one
Let me unwind please give me a hole to recline in

Knocked on my friend's door in moody texas
And asked if he had a place for me
His hair was cut off and he was wearing a suit
And he said not in my house, not in my house
You look like you're part of a conspiracy

Now I'm six hours out on strawberry flats
Trying to get to Waco 'fore it freezes over
They're stopping every one who looks too wierd
At the ghoul bust texas road block
Oh let me come down where I won't be a bother to no one
Let me unwind please give me a hole to recline in

Got a ride on a highway king
Made the cross road by nine fifteen
If I don't find a place to crash
Well I might as well cash it all in

If I was a no 'count gambler or a Texas fool
Or a millionaire with a suit and real short hair
Or do you even care

Rock and Roll Doctor
-- Lowell George, Fred Martin

There was a woman in Georgia didn't feel just right
She had fever all day and chills at night
Now things got worse, yes a serious bind
At times like this it takes a man with such style I cannot often find
A doctor of the heart and a doctor of mind

If you like country with a boogie beat he's the man to meet
If you like the sound of shufflin' feet he can't be beat
If you wanna feel real nice, just ask the Rock and Roll doctor's advice

It's just a country town but patients come
From Mobile to Moline from miles around
Nagodoches to New Orleans
In beat-up old cars or in limousines
To meet the doctor of soul, he's got his very own thing

Two degrees in be-bop, a PHD in swing
He's the master of rhythm he's a rock and roll king

If you like country with a boogie beat he's the man to meet (he's the man to meet)
If you like the sound of shufflin' feet he can't be beat (I say he can't be beat)
If you... If you wanna
If you wanna feel real nice, just ask the Rock and Roll doctor's advice

SADDLE UP THE PALOMINO
Neil Young

Oh, oh, Carmelina,
The daughter of the wealthy banker.
Since she came to town all my friends are gone,
And I'm stuck out here with melody.

Saddle up the palomino, the sun is going down.
The way I feel, this must be real.

If you can't cut it, don't pick up the knife.
There's no reward in your conscience stored
When you're sleepin' with another man's wife.

Saddle up the palomino, the sun is going down.
The way I feel, this must be real.

I wanna lick the platter, the gravy doesn't matter.
It's a cold bowl of chili when love lets you down,
But it's the neighbor's wife I'm after.

Saddle up the palomino, the sun is going down.
The way I feel, this must be real.

Strike up the band brother hand me another bowl of your soul. Brother has a long way to go maybe baby should know his cotton mouth is too slow for the song of the forgotten South, just don't hang us up here.

Step by step by please though proletarian am I. By chance am you "wine git out de way o'de darkies. You'd better hustle up a storm to sing this Caucasian lullaby. Sleep oh my darling now sleep.

Draw freehand over Iron Curtain. Stalk up on the trim bamboo. To footridge the bullrushes certain to know law, American express. No Caucasian flair for flim-flam will do. Step by please step by.

Weigh the small advance. There is still a chance. Let's assume that we form a company men. No mention should the pass in revue of the show. Just understand that I prefer to be dead than red white or blue as I write sturdy crew. As you view these few Russians whose true dawn came to view long ago. So I think that you'd better strike up the band brother hand me another bowl of your soul. The song of the forgotten South just don't hang us up here. Here the unknown is at hand and not far from my heel a tarbaby feel for the Czar. For those who are lonely well the Black sea is callin' Georgia's Stalin has fallen so you all come here. We now are near to the end. If you stay with the show say we all had to go to hasten to jar the few nations too far gone to step by.

Mark Knopfler

Here I am again in this mean old town
And you're so far away from me
And where are you when the sun goes down
You're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

I'm tired of being in love and being all alone
When you're so far away from me
I'm tired of making out on the telephone
And you're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

I get so tired when I have to explain
When you're so far away from me
See you been in the sun and I've been in the rain
And you're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

Let's Burn Down The Cornfield

Let's burn down the cornfield
Let's burn down the cornfield
And we can listen to it burn

You hide behind the oak tree
You hide behind the oak tree
Stay out of danger 'til I return

Oh, it's so good
On a cold night
To have a fire
Burnin' warm and bright

You hide behind the oak tree
You hide behind the oak tree
Stay out of danger 'till I return

Let's burn down the cornfield
Let's burn down the cornfield
And I'll make love to you while it's burning

Guster/Center of Attention

One of us won't last the night, between you and me it's no surprise
There's two of us, both can't be right
Neither will move till it's over
I'm the center of attention and the wall's inside my head
And no one will ever know it if I keep my mouth shut tight
My own little world is what I deserve
Cause I am the only child there is
I'm king of it all, the belle of the ball
I promise I've always been like this
Forever the first, my bubble can't burst
It's almost like only I exist
Where everything's fine, if I can keep my mouth shut tight...tight...tight
All by myself, I'm so much better on my own
And way out there, it is the same old place that it always has been
I'm the center of attention and the wall's inside my head
And no one will ever know it if I keep my mouth shut tight..tight...tight
My own little world is what I deserve
Cause I am the only child there is
I'm king of it all, the belle of the ball
I promise I've always been like this
Forever the first, my bubble can't burst
It's almost like only I exist
Where everything's fine, if I can keep my mouth shut tight...tight...tight
One of us won't last the night, between you and me it's no surprise
There's two of us, both can't be right
Neither will move till it's over
I'm the center of attention and the wall's inside my head
And no one will ever know it if I keep my mouth shut tight
Yeah, no one will ever notice if I keep my mouth shut tight...tight...tight
Cause I am the only child there is
I'm king of it all, the belle of the ball
I promise I've always been like this
Forever the first, my bubble can't burst
It's almost like only I exist
Where everything's mine, if I can keep my mouth shut tight...tight...tight

(When I saw them in concert, it was almost a religious experience for me.)

You Can Leave Your Hat On

Baby, take off your coat...(real slow)
Baby, take off your shoes...(here, I'll take your shoes)
Baby, take off your dress
Yes, yes, yes
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

Go on over there and turn on the light...no, all the lights
Now come back here and stand on this chair...that's right
Raise your arms up in to the air...shake 'em
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live

Suspicious minds are talking
Trying to tear us apart
They say that my love is wrong
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
I know what love is

Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Teach Your Children

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can liveby
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a Good bye.

Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why,
if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why,
if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh
and know they love you.

Long White Cadillac - Dave Alvin
--------------------------------

Night wolves moan
the winter hills are black
I'm all alone
sitting in the back
of a long white Cadillac

Headlights shine
highway fades to black
I'll take my time
in a long white Cadillac
in a long white Cadillac

Sometime I blame it on a woman
Why my achin' heart bleeds
Sometimes I blame it on the money
Sometimes I blame it on me

Train whistle cries
lost on its own track
I'll close my eyes
I'm never coming back
in a long white Cadillac

Night wolves moan
the winter hills are black
I'm all alone
sitting in the back
of a long white Cadillac

One time I had all that I wanted
But it just skipped through my hands
One time I sang away the sorrow
One time I took it like a man

Headlights shine
highway fades to black
it's my last ride
I'm never coming back
in a long white Cadillac

Gloria

(Van Morrison)

Like to tell ya about my baby
You know she comes around
She about five feet four
A-from her head to the ground

You know she comes around here
At just about midnight
She make ya feel so good, Lord
She make ya feel all right

And her name is G-L-O-R-I
G-L-O-R-I-A (GLORIA)
G-L-O-R-I-A (GLORIA)
I'm gonna shout it all night (GLORIA)
I'm gonna shout it everyday (GLORIA)
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

She comes around here
Just about midnight
Ha, she make me feel so good, Lord
I wanna say she make me feel alright

Comes a-walkin' down my street
When she comes to my house
She knocks upon my door
And then she comes in my room
Yeah, an' she make me feel alright

G-L-O-R-I-A (GLORIA)
G-L-O-R-I-A (GLORIA)
I'm gonna shout it all night (GLORIA)
I'm gonna shout it everyday (GLORIA)
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
Looks so good (GLORIA) alright
Just so good (GLORIA) alright, yeah

40,000 Headmen (Winwood/Capaldi)

Forty thousand headmen couldn't make me change my mind
If I had to take the choice between the deafman and the blind
I know just where my feet should go and that's enough for me
I turned around and knocked them down and walked across the sea

Hadn't traveled very far when suddenly I saw
Three small ships a-sailing out towards a distant shore
So lighting up a cigarette I followed in pursuit
And found a secret cave where they obviously stashed their loot

Filling up my pockets, even stuffed it up my nose
I must have weighed a hundred tons between my head and toes
I ventured forth before the dawn had time to change its mind
And soaring high above the clouds I found a golden shrine

Laying down my treasure before the iron gate
Quickly rang the bell hoping I hadn't come too late
But someone came along and told me not to waste my time
And when I asked him who he was he said, 'Just look behind'

So I turned around and forty thousand headmen bit the dirt
Firing twenty shotguns each and man, it really hurt
But luckily for me they had to stop and then reload
And by the time they'd done that I was heading down the road

Sad & Deep As You
by Dave Mason

Lips that are as warm could be,
Lips that speak too soon.
Lips that tell a story,
Sad and deep as you.

Smile that's warm as summer sun,
Smile that gets you through.
Smile that tells a story,
Sad and deep as you.

The eyes that are the window,
Eyes that are the view.
Eyes that tell a story,
Sad and deep as you.

Tears that are unspoken words,
The tears that are the truth.
Tears that tell a story,
Sad and deep as you.

KING OF THE ROAD
(R. Miller)

Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents,

No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes, ah but

Two hours of pushing broom buys a eight by twelve fourbit room,

I'm a man of means by no means, King of the Road

Third box car midnight train, destination Bangor, Maine,

Old worn out suit and shoes, I don't pay no union dues, I smoke

Old stogies I have found, short, but not too big around,

I'm a man of means by no means, King of the Road

I know every engineer on every train,

All of the children and all of their names

And every handout in every town

And ev'ry lock that ain't locked when

No one's around I sing ...

Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents,

No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes, ah but

Two hours of pushing broom buys a eight by twelve fourbit room,

I'm a man of means by no means, King of the Road

Dirge
Bob Dylan

I hate myself for loving you and the weakness that it showed
You were just a painted face on a trip down Suicide Road.
The stage was set, the lights went out all around the old hotel,
I hate myself for loving you and I'm glad the curtain fell.

I hate that foolish game we played and the need that was expressed
And the mercy that you showed to me, who ever would have guessed?
I went out on Lower Broadway and I felt that place within,
That hollow place where martyrs weep and angels play with sin.

Heard your songs of freedom and man forever stripped,
Acting out his folly while his back is being whipped.
Like a slave in orbit, he's beaten 'til he's tame,
All for a moment's glory and it's a dirty, rotten shame.

There are those who worship loneliness, I'm not one of them,
In this age of fiberglass I'm searching for a gem.
The crystal ball up on the wall hasn't shown me nothing yet,
I've paid the price of solitude, but at last I'm out of debt.

Can't recall a useful thing you ever did for me
'Cept pat me on the back one time when I was on my knees.
We stared into each other's eyes 'til one of us would break,
No use to apologize, what difference would it make?

So sing your praise of progress and of the Doom Machine,
The naked truth is still taboo whenever it can be seen.
Lady Luck, who shines on me, will tell you where I'm at,
I hate myself for loving you, but I should get over that.

Sunshine Superman
Donovan

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine

I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

Colours
Donovan

Yellow is the colour of my true love's hair
In the mornin' when we rise,
In the mornin' when we rise,
That's the time, that's the time,
I love the best.
Blue's the colour of the sky
In the mornin' when we rise,
In the mornin' when we rise.
in the mornin' when we rise.
That's the time, that's the time
I love the best.
Green's the colour of the sparklin' corn
In the mornin' when we rise,
In the mornin' when we rise.
in the mornin' when we rise.
That's the time, that's the time
I love the best.
Mellow is the feeling that I get
when I see her, mm hmm,
when I see her, uh huh.
That's the time, that's the time
I love the best.
Freedom is a word I rarely use
Without thinkin', mm hmm,
Without thinkin', mm hmm,
Of the time, of the time
When I've been loved

Life, in a Nutshell/BNL

[One, two, three]
When she was three
Her Barbies always did it on the first date
Now she's with me,
There's never any need for them to demonstrate
She's like a baby, I'm like a cat;
When we are happy, we both get fat and still
It's never enough, it's never enough,
It's never enough.

But I don't tend to worry about the things that other people say,
And I'm learning that I wouldn't want it any other way
Call me crazy but it really doesn't matter
All that matters to me is she

Her life, in a nutshell
No way would she want it to change me
It's not that easy 'cause
My time is often decided for me
For me

She memorized every pencil crayon color in the box
Her blue-green eyes complement the burnt sienna in her locks
She's at the movies, I'm on the phone;
When we're separated we're never alone, but still
It's never enough, it's never enough, no it's never enough.

But I don't tend to worry 'bout the things that other people say,
And I'm learning that I wouldn't want it any other way
Call me crazy but it really doesn't matter
All that matters to me is she

Her life, in a nutshell
No way would she want it to change me
It's not that easy 'cause
My time is often decided for me
For me

I fell down
With no one there to catch me from falling
Then she came 'round
And only her tenderness stopped me from bawling my eyes out
I'm ok,
And that's why

Her life, in a nutshell
No way would she want it to change me
It's not that easy 'cause
My time is often decided for me
And I don't tend to worry 'bout the things that other people say,
And I'm learning that I wouldn't want it any other way
Call me crazy but it really doesn't matter
All that matters to me is she

We're Going to Be Friends/The White Stripes

(I've had this stuck in my head for the last couple of days, so I thought I'd share.)

fall is here, hear the yell
back to school, ring the bell
brand new shoes, walking blues
climb the fence, book and pens
i can tell that we are gonna be friends

walk with me, suzy lee
through the park, by the tree
we will rest upon the ground
and look at all the bugs we've found
then safely walk to school
without a sound

well here we are, no one else
we walked to school all by ourselves
there's dirt on our uniforms
from chasing all the ants and worms
we clean up and now it's time to learn

numbers, letters, learn to spell
nouns, and books, and show and tell
at playtime we will throw the ball
back to class, through the hall
teacher marks our height against the wall

and we don't notice any time pass
we don't notice anything
we sit side by side in every class
teacher thinks that i sound funny
but she likes the way you sing

tonight i'll dream while i'm in bed
when sill thoughts go through my head
about the bugs and alphabet
and when i wake tomorrow i'll bet
that you and i will walk together again
cause i can tell that we
are going to be friends

The Auld Triangle by Brendan Behan

A hungry feeling came o'er me stealing
and the mice they were squealing in my prison cell.
And that auld triangle went jingle jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh to start the morning, the warden bawling,
Get up out of bed you, and clean out your cell.
And that auld triangle went jingle jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh, the screw was peeping and the lag was sleeping
as he lay weeping for his girl Sal.
And that auld triangle went jingle jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

On a fine spring evening, the lag lay dreaming
and the seagulls were wheeling high above the wall.
And that auld triangle went jingle jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh the wind was sighing, and the day was dying
as the lag lay crying in his prison cell.
And that auld triangle went jingle bloody jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

In the female prison, there are seventy women.
And I wish it was with them that I did dwell.
Then that auld triangle could go jingle jangle
all along the banks of the Royal Canal.

for you of the Green :)

i couldn't find Shane MacGowan's full version of it on youtube -- you have to go to the Pogues' album "Red Roses for Me" to hear that. it's incredible.

this link is by Luke Kelly & The Dubliners -- good enough, but not as good as Shane.

Title: Lessons Learned

There's some things that I regret,
Some words I wish had gone unsaid,
Some starts,
That had some better endings,
Been some bad times I've been through,
Damage I cannot undo,
Some things,
I wish I could do all all over again,
But it don't really matter,
Life gets that much harder,
It makes you that much stronger,
Oh, some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were,
Lessons learned.

[CHORUS:]
And every tear that had to fall from my eyes,
Everyday I wonder how I get through the night,
Every change, life has thrown me,
I'm thankful, for every break in my heart,
I'm grateful, for everytime,
Some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were lessons learned.

There's mistakes that I have made,
Some chances I just threw away,
Some roads,
I never should've taken,
Been some signs I shouldn't see,
Hearts that I hurt needlessly,
Some roads,
That I wish I could have one more chance to make,
But it don't make no difference,
The past can't be rewritten,
You get the life you're given,
Oh, some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were,
Lessons learned.

[CHORUS:]
And every tear that had to fall from my eyes,
Everyday I wonder how I get through the night,
Every change, life has thrown me,
I'm thankful, for every break in my heart,
I'm grateful, for everytime,
Some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were lessons learned.

And all the things that break you,
All the things that make you strong,
You can't change the past,
Cause it's gone,
And nothing's gotta go,
Because they are gone,
Lessons learned.

[CHORUS:]
And every tear that had to fall from my eyes,
Everyday I wonder how I get through the night,
Every change, life has thrown me,
I'm thankful, for every break in my heart,
I'm grateful, for everytime,
Some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were lessons learned,
Oh, some pages turned,
Some bridges burned,
But there were lessons learned,
Lessons learned.

Title: Wasted

Standing at the back door
She tried to make it fast
One tear hit the hard wood
It felt like broken glass
She said sometimes love slips away
And you just can't get it back
Let's face it

For once this second
She almost turned around
But that would be like pouring rain
Back into a cloud
So she took another step and said
I see the way out and I'm gonna' take it

I don't wanna' spend my life jaded
Waiting to wake up one day and find
That I've let all these years go by
Wasted

Another glass of whisky and it still don't kill the pain
So he stumbles to the sink and pours it down the drain
He says it's time to be a man and stop living for yesterday
Face it.

Cause' I don't wanna' spend my life jaded
Waiting to wake up one day and find
That I've let all these years go by
Wasted

Oh I don't wanna' keep on wishing, missing
But still every morning' the color of the night
I ain't spending no more time
Wasted

She kept drivin' along
Till the moon and the sun were floating side-by-side
He looked in the mirror and his eyes were clear
For the first time in a while

Hey, yeah,
Oh, I don't wanna' spend my life jaded
Waiting to wake up one day and find
That I've let all these years go by
Wasted

Oh I don't wanna' keep on wishing, missing
But still every morning' the color of the night
I ain't spending no more time
Wasted

Oh, I don't wanna' spend my life jaded
Waiting to wake up one day and find
That I've let all these years go by
Wasted

Yeah, yeah
Oh I don't wanna' keep on wishing, missing
But still every morning' the color of the night
I ain't spending no more time
Wasted

I Danced
Violent Femmes

I danced before I had two feet.
Sang before I had a tongue.
I laughed before I had two eyes.
Loved before my heart was young.
I swam before I had two hands
and held the distance in my toes.
Before I heard the stars I knew
the wild compulsion of the rose.
I bore the fruits of many lies.
Before I came into this day.
I knew before my grave was made,
the worms eat only death away
the worms eat only death away
I danced before I had two feet
I danced before I had two feet
I danced before I had two feet
I danced before I had two feet
