poll: favorite musical act?

my favorite music generally is anything with guitars (probably something with mum playing guitar when she was pregnant with me untill she couldn't get her arms round the guitar).

Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Cream
Pink Floyd
Nick Drake
John Williams (Cavatina from the Deer Hunter)
Radiohead
Rage Against The Machine
Johnny Cash (especially his cover of Hurt)

as you can see it's a varied bag of music that I like you can tell that when the first casette I bought was Nigel Kenneys The Four Seasons and the second was Black Sabbath...

andy: what's your opinion of yngwe malmsteen?

ed

he's a technically brilliant guitarist but to be honest what I've heard of his stuff falls under the category "wank guitar" ie showing off for the sake of it.

Mind you I do like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani cmon steve vai is the guy who was credited as playing stunt guitar by frank zappa

Try Tommy Emmmanuel, another superb guitarist, also his brother Phil.

What an unfortunate last name, I bet he copped heaps at school, not that his middle name is any better.

Boom Boom. :nana:

Highway Star by Deep Purple just came on the radio. Haven't heard it in a while. Was a favorite of mine in high school. :)

why do i have a vague memory of knowing someone involved with that band? seems to me that, as a child, i lived near a relative of a band member or something... ugh... this is gonna plague me for days now. thanks.

incubus is FUCKING AWESOME in concert... i especially like the solos and Time Lapse Consortium inserts... and... droool...... brandon boyd

Might be time to hook up the ol' turntable and get the vinyl out. :)

back in the day, these guys did one hell of a show... even now they're still superb, if not as animated.

ah yes, the good ol' days

ya really have to admit that the prog rock bands were the most innovative force to ever hit rock music. the the AC top 40 punks should give them props for moving the genre along. prog rock bands are musicians' musicians... both in skill and entertainment.

the closest thing i can think of in more modern groups that's pushing any real boundaries is TSO. don't get me wrong... i like all kinds of music and don't stay stuck in a pariticular "generation" of artists but i don't think it's going out on a limb to say that the recording industry hasn't done anything really innovative in a good 20 years. not a lot "wrong" with what HAS been done recently, it's just not new.

I think that's a fair observation.

I find it interesting that our kids like a lot of the music my wife and I like....music that we've had for years. I know when I was a kid I hated most of the shit my mom listened to.

yeah. when i was a teen, i wasn't too interested in the classic rock stuff. i was more interested in what the radio dictated to me... but classic rock grew on me and i came to respect it. that led me to prog rock as i explored and learned more about music in general.

i liked listening to music with my parents and grandparents... exposed me to opera, classical, AM radio (lol), 50's crap, jazz, swing, etc.... as long as it's a little loud, i'm cool with just about anything (save rap/hip-hop and country).

in fact, i think i'm gonna shove some arturo sandoval into the cd player tomorrow. i've been jazz free for a couple months now.

go yankees!

Do you think that could have something to do with the constant sampling and remixing of older songs, speaking of originality.

When we were moving my son back to school last month, he told me he was leaving his CD collection at home, and said I could borrow whatever I wanted. What a variety! Disturbed, Alanis Morissette, Led Zeppelin, Oleander, Linkin Park, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Oleander! I thought I was the only one who had anything by them in my collection.

My collection is really varied, like your son's (I'm not that much older than he probably is, though). I've got everything - Loreena McKennit, Simon & Garfunkel, Powderfinger, Mushroomhead, Static X, Prodigy, Tracy Chapman, Modest Mouse, Bach, Pachbel, Eminem, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Weezer, Barenaked Ladies... I could go on and on. The genres that are lacking the most are rap (I lump hiphop and R&B into this, even though I'd get shot by some for doing so), country, and teenypop... though I've even got a smattering of these types of songs.

I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone say Rush yet.

rush is another great one... and they do a great show. i'm surprised that, at least when i saw them, they don't inflate the band for live performances like genesis does. the stage always looked kind of empty with just the three of 'em... but it works just like it works for ELP. i think ELP's writing is more condusive to a three piece than rush's is. IMO.

Phish

Phish. With or without drugs, that band can find the peak of the song and climax the shit out of it. If you haven't heard them or really given them a fair shot, don't judge them on what you think you know. I would say check out the album Billy Breathes, cause most songs are under 5 minutes on the album and it is produced beautifully.

My favourite band are Cult of Luna, I honestly feel there has never been a group that comes close to comparing with them and it's a sad representation of the human race that many choose to dismiss them merely as copycats to bands much more predictable and cliched, perhaps even poppy, like Neurosis and Isis, both decent and nothing more. Needless to say, Cult of Luna are the best thing to come out of Sweden since, well you know, women.

Otherwise I like most genres within metal, Deftones, Knut, Million Dead, Slayer, Carcass, Ion Dissonance, Will Haven to name but a few. I am also partial to bands such as Interpol and Biffy Clyro, I have always had a penchant for The Smiths and The Prodigy (From my youth). Recently I also discovered Radiohead and they threaten to become a favourite band.

I know that this will elicit some groans, but I adore Ahlee Simpson. I have seen her in concert twice and she never fails to put on a good show. I am also a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson. She is real, she's awesome, and she knows how to perform. Lately though I have been getting into acts like Anna Nadilick (?), the Breathe (2a.m.) girl.
