Radio Free Jezebel

Happy Birthday, Marian McP!

Marian McPartland turned 90 yesterday. Besides serving as the hostess of NPR's Piano Jazz, she is a rock solid jazz pianist her own self. Like, check this out:
  • Here she is at the Monterey Jazz Festival, 1975. Very mellow.
  • In this one, she's jamming with Benny Carter, Sweets Edison, and Louie Bellson, among others. Louie's wearing French cuffs, fer Gawd's sake!
  • Here she does Bix Beiderbecke's In a Mist. The odd thing about this was I always thought of Bix as a cornet player. Guy played piano as well. And well.
Anyway. Happy birthday, O sweet Marian.

Oh thank you for this info, T-man. I have a few of her cds, and she really was amazing in her heyday (and a long heyday it has been; she may still be playing for all I know). Marion is one of the last of that great generation of classic jazz musicians. She transitioned from swing to bebop through hard bop and cool and free jazz. She's just so good that she did her thing and has lasted through it all.

Here she is in Art Kane's 1958 photo, A Great Day in Harlem. That's her in the first row, in the white halter dress. Marylou Williams is to her right (and then Monk next to Marylou).

By the way, that's Milt "Judge" Hinton, playing bass on the Dolphin Street video. He was a great "walking" bass player and a wonderful photographer. Some of the best candid shot of the famous classic jazzers were taken by Hinton between the 1930s-1960s. As a friend and fellow jazzer, he was often able to get shots that the pros couldn't.

Yes, I do like jazz. :D

I lust for you
r CD collection. ;)

A set for loststar. There's, um, a theme...

smokin' groove from the Chemical Brothers. Audiosexuals: try this one.

Apparently the lead singer of this band is a 17 year old alien from the Japan of the future. Or something. Well, anyway, she's cute. For a rotoscoped 17 year old.

The explanation of the video was so wonderful I copied it:
Nobody knows about Genki Rockets in detail....

This is a music group which vocal is 17years old girl, Lumi, a first baby born in outer space and has never been to the earth.

This group is organized in 30years later the present time.
(She lives in the future world)

Those are the all information on Genki Rockets.
Genki Rockets will work with various kinds of artists and create brand
new music and movies. This should be the latest project nobody ever
launches.

You can't take your eyes off the Genki Rockets from now on!

Long as we're in Japan, how bout some kicky Japanese punk?

Okay, sorry, I couldn't resist. A really poppy star from Madonna

And I'm breaking the theme entirely here, but it's a ROCKIN' song. You're under strict orders to crank this and dance around like a crazy to Miz Gwen.

There are cookies in the Bistro for you, as well as Chefzilla in all his culinary glory.

You can't take your eyes off the Genki Rockets from now on!!!!!

Since we're going in this direction, I thought I'd add my two sense, and play a bit of what's going on in MY head. Ladies...

Nina Simone:
Just Like a Woman/I Shall Be Released

Carmen McRae:
As Time Goes By

Sarah Vaughn:

Please stop me before I do a radio show!! I just don't know which one to leave out!

And I'll bet no one expected to see a list like this from an old burned-out Deadhead!

i have died and gone to heaven, with these two sets!
*swoons and sways*
i still haven't gotten the hang of the inserting links thing, but here are a few of my favorite jazz cuts:

  • April in Paris - Sarah Vaughn *her nick name was 'Sassy' by the way*;)
(there are so many great versions of this song, but none compares to hers)
  • Isn't This A Lovely Day? - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
  • The Nearness Of You - Ella & Louis
(both cuts from the same album, titled Ella & Louis)
  • Autumn In New York - Billie Holiday
  • In A Sentimental Mood - Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
    (conjures images of wind chimes...)

these all have a really mellow vibe and could seamlessly play back to back.
having no links will leave you a little leg work, but i promise it's worth it, if you love jazz.

April in Paris bonus pack

Ella, Louis and Rainy Paris

settling for Sinatra

Billie and the Big Apple

Getting Sentimental

Indeed, an excellent set.

Here at the shop we have an embarrassingly large bookmark file named "Stupid Internet Shit" on the main computer. When people like loststar come in we subject them to heinous videos we've collected over the years, mostly when we should have been doing more constructive things with our time.

Here's what I treated loststar to this morning, whether she liked it or not. Enjoy.

I suppose I should insert the obligatory beverage spew alert for several of these.

Panda

Viking Kittens!

They're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard

It's Business Time

o jesus!

okay, settle down and get all inspired now.

WhereintheHellisMatt?

(just play the one at the top there).

Thanks to everyone who keeps this thread going. I think of it these days as the bistro jukebox.

The Amazing A told me this morning that she was having a Steve Winwood day today, having heard an interview with him yesterday on NPR, and then listening to a Blind Faith album on the way home from work. So herewith, I present to you today's selections: It's a Steve Winwood day.

Whiter Shade of Pale: Procol Harum

Dear Mr. Fantasy: Traffic

Higher Love: with Chaka Kahn

Georgia on My Mind: Spencer Davis Group

Can't Find My Way Home: Blind Faith

And I just added this to the list, I found a live version of the same song. Steve's voice isn't nearly as pure (not in a studio, but live outdoors), but the visuals of Winwood, Clapton, and Baker are priceless.
Can't Find My Way Home: Live version

And by the way, this last one is one of my all-time favorite recordings, and maybe the sweetest, most perfect male vocals in the history of Rock and Roll music.

Enjoy!

Great choices, bro. And I can see why you love A so: anyone who has the good taste to listen to Blind Faith is A-OK in my book. ;)

But now a set for the sweet and jazzy sassynyc cause I can tell she loves this music as much as I do.

Soothe Me, Baby

Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

They Call Me Big Mama

Wee Baby Blues

And finally some Sassy for Sassy:

I Can't Give You Anything But Love

I went back and listened to the Blind Faith record (that's right...RECORD!! Remember those?) after she stumbled into this Winwood thing. I had found him and Clapton doing Can't Find My Way Home. on YouTube, and was struck by how different his vocal was from the original. I can't find a better rock and roll vocal than that original. Incredible. I've been listening to it over and over the last few days--the whole record, in fact, and I'm awestruck all over again. Go back and listen again to the "Georgia on My Mind" I linked. He was about fifteen or sixteen. Unbelievable!

records:confused:
oh, you mean those big black cd's :D
that's what my 5 yr. old nephew calls them
---------------------------------------------------------------
wow! i just went back and listened to "Georgia On My Mind". that's the first time i've heard a version that i liked as much as Ray Charles'. i'd want that on vinyl any day over a cd. i know Winwood from the 80's. i always loved Higher Love. but this... damn, he had impressive chops for a 16 yr. old. no sign of his age at all.
i may very well end up perusing some dingy little whole in the wall this weekend that still sells vinyl. time to go diggin' in the crates.
