Chicago Transit Authority

Hi there ancient mariners. Here's what I'm listening to today. Feelin' a little bit old, so I went back to find some early Chicago Transit Authority, from the original band lineup. CTA was one of the earliest incarnations of jazz-rock, along with Blind Faith and Blood Sweat and Tears. And, for those of you who fell in love with sappy ballads in the late seventies and early eighties (the kind that killed Chicago Transit Authority and replaced it with Chicago: the Pop Band), yes that IS Peter Cetera singing and playing the bass. So this morning, I give you,

I'm a Man

One of the few downsides of vacation traveling is that I don't listen much to music. (Yes, I have an iPod. No, I don't take it with me. I have lots of other, better things to do than sit around with earbuds blenderizing my consciousness.)

Here are some cuts I kind of came across, though, one way or another:

before iPods there was the mix tape

This is my playlist of the moment. It's a mix of very different artists, but these songs evoke a similar vibe. They're all on the mellow side, but somewhere in each of them, you'll find a hot beat. Perfect for that in-between vibe, when I want something mellow, but not coma-inducing. Perhaps easy listening with a little kick. Fits my mood perfectly right now.

Apologize ~ One Republic

Breathe Me ~ Sia

I’m With You ~ Avril Lavigne

Here With Me ~ Dido

In The Air Tonight ~ Phil Collins

Drops of Jupiter ~ Train

I started here, actually, with the Janis Joplin clip from Anschul, which is of a Big Mama Thornton song. Which lead me to Lieber and Stoller and, uh, this:
  • Big Mama Thornton, with a really young Buddy Guy on the guitar. This version absolutely swings.
  • Elvis, the one we all know. Dig the white socks.
  • John Lennon with, unfortunately, Yoko. The sad thing here is Who has the talent? I really, really hope he loved her.
  • Jimi doing a casually fabulous acoustic version. If you've ever even touched a guitar, his offhanded brilliance will make you embarrassed that you even tried. No point. The clip also includes an electric performance of Foxy Lady. God bless Marshall amps.
  • Jerry Lee Lewis.
  • A version from a really young Little Richard.
  • Bryan Adams.
  • Choreographed, sort of.
  • Oh, dear. Dancing with the "Stars". I think I'd better stop here.

ooooooo Kate. I'd crawl a mile on broken glass to drink that woman's bathwater.

Here's another collaboration with David Gilmour, from her Sensual World album. It's one of my favorite cuts on that collection, which is saying a great deal, since the whole album is magnificent. This one is beautiful and inspirational. It's cheating, since I don't have time to do a whole set at the moment, but I wanted to share this with you.

Bonus: Trio Bulgarka also sings on this, as well as many other cuts on the album. They are too wonderful to even describe.

Rocket's Tail

That November night, looking up into the sky,
You said,

"Hey, wish that was me up there--
It's the biggest rocket I could find,
And it's holding the night in its arms
If only for a moment.
I can't see the look in its eyes,
But I'm sure it must be laughing."

But it seemed to me the saddest thing I'd ever seen,
And I thought you were crazy, wishing such a thing.

I saw only a stick on fire,
Alone on its journey
Home to the quickening ground,
With no one there to catch it.

I put on my pointed hat
And my black and silver suit,
And I check my gunpowder pack
And I strap the stick on my back.
And, dressed as a rocket on Waterloo Bridge--
Nobody seems to see me.
Then, with the fuse in my hand,
And now shooting into the night
And still as a rocket,
I land in the river.

Was it me said you were crazy?
I put on my cloudiest suit,
Size 5 lightning boots, too.

'Cause I am a rocket
On fire.
Look at me go, with my tail on fire,
With my tail on fire,
On fire.
Hey, look at me go, look at me...

Rocket's Tail

I knew you liked Kate Bush. She's been a protege of David's for a long time. Pretty talented lady. David struck gold on her, and she's done pretty good. He's a good guy, and a good talent evaluator.

Sorry I blew the title on the last post. I knew it was the other one, just fucked up...

Running Up That Hill

If I only could, Id be running up that hill.
If I only could, Id be running up that hill.

It doesnt hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesnt hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that Im making?
You, its you and me.

And if I only could,
Id make a deal with god,
And Id get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...

You dont want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware Im tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.

Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, dont we?
You, its you and me.
Its you and me wont be unhappy.

And if I only could,
Id make a deal with god,
And Id get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
Say, if I only could, oh...

You,
Its you and me,
Its you and me wont be unhappy.

Cmon, baby, cmon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
Cmon, angel, cmon, cmon, darling,
Lets exchange the experience, oh...

And if I only could,
Id make a deal with god,
And Id get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
Id make a deal with god,
And Id get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

Oh lovely! Yum. Thank you.

Man with the Child in his Eyes was the first song I ever heard from her. Heartwrenching.

And she's done so much incredible collaboration, but that Tori Amos duet is completely gorgeous. Are those not just the two most beautiful women you've ever laid eyes on? I mean, golly. woof.

I'm off to dinner soon with a very nice soundtrack playing in my head now. Thanks.

Lady Day is my all time favorite jazz singer! There were artists with better voices, but nobody could convey feeling through lyric the way she could. You can hear every triumph and tragedy she's ever endured, wrapped up in her songs. I've seen Lady Sings the Blues so many times.... if they ever do a remake, I'm going to open call for auditions.

This is my absolute favorite Lady Day Recording (specifically this version)

Thank you sweetness. It's a lovely recording. And autumn in New York is magical. E-dub has never been there and I'd love to take him in mid October. I'll let you know if & when we actually do it--we'd love to meet you for a drink or dinner. :)

Oh. And read this. It's one of my best poems, imo. I don't mean to push them on anyone, but you, I know, will totally get it.

Your jazz sister

PS Here's a little somethin to keep the autumn theme going. ;)

I remember being a kid in school with a crush on a gay male wiccan in Kansas of all places (yes it is true) who played for me first "The Breathing" and then "Man with the Child in His eyes." I'll forever associate Kate with Tim and patchouli- heavy sweaters, sitting cross legged on the basement floor next to the turntable.

*sigh*

OMG there are WICCANS in KANSAS?
That's just crazy.

Public service announcement: it is not mandatory that all witches wear patchouli. Hippies and lesbians are still constrained by the laws, but witches got a special dispensation to forego patchouli if they wished.

suh-weet.

UYS should appreciate these too - she's all blonde.
