Lust is the one that gets me every timeThe Operative: Do you know what your sin is, Mal?
Mal: Ah Hell... I'm a fan of all seven.

In the older list, they had tristitia, which got retranslated later as "envy." It actually meant "sadness" or "depression." John the Ascetic, you wacky bastard!Lust is the one that gets me every time
IKR? Every time the table next to me has better food than me, I catch myself staring.Lust is the one that gets me every time

I love seeing what other people order at restaurantsIKR? Every time the table next to me has better food than me, I catch myself staring.
And then taking a bite when they are distracted!I love seeing what other people order at restaurants
Oh there's no harm in the looking. It's the letting the want marinate in your mind, seeing yourself getting to do what that man is doing to that pie.I love seeing what other people order at restaurants
Gonna get explainy, heh.Wait so sadness/depression is a deadly sin?
Very interesting...Gonna get explainy, heh.
Originally there were nine, not sins but "bad thoughts," per Horace, three each of physical, mental, and emotional. Later one got down to 8 ( gluttony, prostitution, greed, sadness, wrath, acedia (apathy, more or less), boasting, and arrogance), and they dropped boasting and retranslated a bit to get it down to the seven. But yes, this was all out of the mouths of monks, not the Bible.
It becomes a bit of fascinating Western culture, in art, literature, and everything. Well, fascinating to me...
Taking notes
Yes, l look like this most days minus the green skin. One of my two Christmas themed shirts.
Wait so sadness/depression is a deadly sin?
Very interesting...
Last night I was watching Terms of Endearment with my kids and my son told me that if I ever got cancer and died he would not want to be around anymore. I told him I'd be watching from heaven to make sure he didn't do anything and my daughter piped in and said, "mom, we all know you'll be in hell."
I'm glad they know me well enough to know that I'd never want to be in heaven. That list looks like a day in the life to me.
I wish I was nasty enough to write that sometimes
Sort of? As I remember, Evagrius cribbed from Horace's logismoi, but the Orthodox Church is the one who changed it from depression to "depression based on envy." Which got tied into "covet not," but was still originally '"don't be depressed." Angela Tilby has an excellent book on the subject that I read last summer.Only if it leads to jealousy. Like if you get sad or depressed because you don’t have what someone else does so you covet it. Which is also a Ten Commandments no no.
Dante wrote one of the most popular self-insert fanfics ever, and it rewrote how people see the afterlife. The Bible describes hell as eternal separation from God, and that is it. Everything else we see came from Dante and Milton -- level and layers, a massive, winged Satan as the ruler, sinners punished, flame and/or ice, fighting, all of it.Which leads us to Dante’s Inferno. A place dedicated to hyper sexed lustful people. Their punishment being they are never satisfied while they are there for eternity. I don’t remember the details, it’s been a while since I read it and now I will have to go look it up.
If that’s true we are all screwed. Although not as bad as what awaits the really bad people.
Ftr, this is the right amount of explainy in my book. Thank you sir!Sort of? I learned everything I know about Hell and the Abyss from Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.Dante wrote one of the most popular self-insert fanfics ever, and it rewrote how people see the afterlife.
