I sure screwed up! I thought we were going to Sedona with friends on Saturday for the night. Nope, it's tomorrow. So having corned beef and cabbage tonight.

I walked last night from about 5:45 to 7pm. I think I found my time to walk. It was beautiful, the sunset was stunning and I really enjoyed it.

The only problem is my fitbit is not accurately measuring my distance. The first day I walked 6 miles and it recorded 4. The last two times, I walked 3.4 miles and got credit for 2.4 and 2.17 miles. Apparently, I'm not alone as evidenced on the Fitbit website forums.

I have a busy day today! Carpet cleaners at 9. Giving my friend a massage. MrSB's son is coming for dinner.

I did measure my stride and entered it in that setting. I'm sure GPS is enabled but will check again.

So this is strange. On MrSB's phone, Fitbit is listed under Location Services and Location Service is listed under the Fitbit app.

On my phone it is not. mmmmm.....

Fitbits and smart watches that measure step counts use heuristics that detect specific motions of your arm to "identify" what it thinks are movements caused by walking steps. They are most accurate when you are doing a normal arm swing while walking. If that motion is exaggerated by larger arm swings, or altered in other ways, such as carrying something (ie weights or a water bottle), or holding a dog leash, then the counts will be off.

Likewise these devices detect bicycle riding, step climbing, and other motions using different arm movements. My smart watch says I am riding a bike when I am actually mowing the yard!

These devices just are not perfect, and in many ways can be totally unreliable. A "normal" walking stride with "normal" arm motion is most likely to produce a consistent result. And I use the term "consistent" instead of "accurate".

And if they cannot count steps accurately, they cannot measure distance accurately, even if they have your stride length correct.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!! I think this is the very first day in my entire life that I won't be having corned beef and cabbage on St. Pat's day. We'll probably cook it Sunday.

We are off to Sedona with friends! We'll come home tomorrow. Yes, they are lifestyle friends.

What I find amazing is how every other app was correct. The problem with just using the iPhone Health app is you have to be have the phone on your body all the time to record data.

A friend and I walked yesterday.
Fitbit recorded 3.92 miles and 8867 steps
iPhone Health App recorded 4.6 miles and 10,492 steps
App called Steps recorded 4.6 miles.10,492 steps
Friend's walking app recorded 4.6 miles and 10,478 steps
Drove the car afterwards and it's 4.6 miles!

Anyway, I'm going to have to accept that it's incorrect and move on. I do like the sleep analysis, heartbeat, calorie's burned and other features of the fitbit.

A friend from the other site gave me the nipple/clit jewelry last year that I'm wearing in the photos to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy!
