The answer was cool (I paraphrase), ...as a sign to the world of their commitment to their relationship. They didn't want a social convention to cast any doubt on what was already cemented in their minds and hearts. But then, as the day approached, they both found that they liked the step, and even in spite of their best intentions - there was a feeling of "okay, the games are over, this is for real." I think the act of getting married "legally" drove home the ideas of vows, promises, all professed before man and God, and they found themselves even more committed to each other.
I told them about Anne's and my "Give 100% with no accounting..." deal. They liked the idea of it. "Don't keep score..."
They are going to do well...
