The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

Let's go ahead and start nominating and voting on the November 2009 BOTM!9.) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson

This has been a huge bestseller all of Europe and for good reason. It is a crime novel which combines a great plot with really powerful themes such as intolerance and corporate corruption. I'm really looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy.
I've read this book and can highly recommend it. I have to say that it's one of the greatest read I've ever done. I borrowed it from my mom on a Thursday last year, and finished it in the morning of the following Monday.

The next two books are also very good reads indeed, just as great in my opinion. I read the second right after the first one, but the third one wasn't out in Denmark at that point, so since book two ended as a cliffhanger, I went to the publishers Swedish website, and read the first chapter of book three there, to find out what happened ;)

My dear, you are WHY this book is on the list! You have mentioned how good it is a few times and I have listened!

Not yet to be honest. As I mentioned I read it last year, listened to the audio book later on, watched the movie first time earlier this year, and rewatched it a little more than a month ago, at a marathon for the movies of the first two books.

The movie of the first book is great, even though they did have to change some stuff, but that's understandable.

The books aren’t on the list, to my knowledge, but I’ll ask any way.

I’m a huge fan of Film Noir and the better written crime genre to include some of the works of Mickey Spillane. For years I’ve been told by book shop owners and librarians that I had to read Chandler as his Phillip Marlowe was the definitive “hard boiled gumshoe”.

I finally broke down and started reading with “the Big Sleep”, acclaimed as THE American detective novel. I wasn’t all that awe struck. Is it just me or has anyone else had this same reaction?

I’m well into “the Lone Goodbye” at the moment and frankly I’m having trouble finishing it because it seems to be heavy on sub-plot and short on pay off. Two-thirds of the way into the book and I’m still wondering when we’re going to get around to addressing the murder that happened in about chapter three or four.

Chandler is a fun read. I really enjoy the call backs to things I’d forgotten (elevator operators and transoms, for instance). But I’m not sure he is the be all, end all of the genre.

I think they can be fun reads but I don't think they are BDSM reads. However I am happy to add to the list any BDSM books people would like that we haven't already done.

WAIT!
I didn't realize that it was a specificly BDSM related list! I thought that it was a general book list that was occupied of peopel with a bent (maybe a little sheltered from the General Board as well).

I polite withdraw the question in favor of the threads intended purpose.

IB

No worries. We do have a couple of more generalized threads on reading including mine, Reading Books For Pleasure.

1.) Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey

3.)Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas

4.) One Dark Night by Jaid Black.

6.) Warrior's Woman by Johanna Lindsey.

8) The Love Slave by Bertrice Small

11.) Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, Book 7) by Laurell K. Hamilton

12.) Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1) by Jeaniene Frost

13.) Menage by Emma Holly

Ok, I'd be interested in 1, 3, and 12. I've already read the others and could easily do a review on them.

But if asked to make a decision, I think 3 looks awesome.

Okay, I'm going to say that

Hello all. I haven't read many BDSM books and am excited to expand my knowledge of them. I thought this would be a great place to start.

I just finished Carrie's Story and am looking forward to discussing it at the end of the month. :)

I checked out Wolf Tales and it looks great. I vote for that also.

Carrie's Story by Molly Weatherfield

Did you like the book overall or not?

It was okay for me. I liked some parts, didn't like other parts.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Not really. It's BDSM fiction, where everyone who is a top is rich and mostly uncaring. That is so not my thang.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Some of them, now and then got me warm.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Not that much.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Maybe if everyone else wanted to but I'm not terribly eager.

What did you like best about this selection?

It was short and quick. It was less affected than a lot of BDSM Lit. I liked that the girl was no more in love with the wanker that first trained her than he seemed to be with her. I liked that they were both just exploring or so it seemed to me.

What did you like the least?

There was no real relationship that based the Top/bottom one in the book. I didn't like how the top threw out the, "I'd like to get to know you better but was too scared to tell you" card after the fact. That's just crap IMO.

How would you have changed the story?

They would have had a real relationship and trust FIRST before engaging in kink. He wouldn't have wanted to sell her, and/OR . . .

She would have gotten with the lead female at the auction or the willfully disrespectful dude.

Did you like the book overall or not?

The book was ok overall, a quick interesting read but I could have done without it.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

I felt there was too much focus on the stylized aspects of BDSM--the instruments, outfits, and vocabulary--and not enough focus on the emotional and mental aspects of it. I felt the author relied too heavily on cliche to tell the story and not enough on character and realistically portraying the main relationship.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

The sex scenes lacked detail and once again relied too much on cliche and not enough on the characters.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Not at all. I found the girl to be kind of clueless and the guy to be a little unbearable.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I might give it a try, but without much enthusiasm.

What did you like best about this selection?

I liked seeing the girl being treated as a pony--it reminded me of Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" series and it was partially sexy.

What did you like the least?

I disliked that the sex scenes seemed rushed and had very little detail. I remember reading the words "I sucked and sucked..." yeah, ok, and then what???

How would you have changed the story?

Like FurryFury mentioned, I would have liked to see the girl with the willfully disrespectful guy. He was actually the most lively character in the whole thing. Even if they didn't get together, he deserved a much bigger part and to have his own background. It might have added some much needed flavor to a rather dry selection.

Despite the fact that I didn't like this one, I did enjoy reading critically and answering the questions. It was a great exercise. Looking forward to the next one. :D

Thanks for reading along. Sorry you didn't really enjoy the book that much but I'm glad you did enjoy reading critically and answering the questions.

:)

I agree with you Wicked Doll. I'm not throwing anything. I can't explain the turn on of pony play because I don't get it either. I found it a turn off here and in the Beauty book.

I'm guessing it has something to do with little girls loving horses and wanting to be loved and objectified? Idk.
