The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

I can't wait to discuss it. But I must.

*sigh*

Sorry you were a bit disappointed. I think I know why.

:rose:

I think I know why you liked it. lol

We've been doing this thread together for awhile. We're getting to know what the other person likes in a book. :p

Ok, I will vote. I haven't read the majority of any series that was mentioned except the Laurell K. Hamilton one so this is my choice:

12.) Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1) by Jeaniene Frost

I am not sure what the guidelines are for nominating a book but you might check into the Mercy books by Patricia Briggs if you haven't already read them and see if they qualify also. I would love to "need" to buy the 4th book.

Thank you.

Sounds familiar. At least the author does. Hm.

And to nominate a book you gotta just say 'I nominate . . . '. But we normally try to take series in order, so whichever is the first for that series.

I looked. I don't see anything in the lists by Patricia Briggs. Which makes me wonder why the name is so familiar.

Moon Called is the first one in that Mercy series by Patricia Biggs. I've read it and liked it.

Halfway to the Grave sounds good to me as well.

:rose:

17) Topping from Below and 18) As She's Told both look extremely intriguing and I would love to read either of those. But for the sake of consensus, I'll go with 12) Halfway to the Grave. There will be other opportunities to read the others, which I am definitely looking forward to.

Well, I'm good with reading any of them.

Halfway to the Grave looks like it's the one though.

:rose:

Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1) by Jeaniene Frost is the December 2009 BOTM!

The discussion of Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas our November BOTM may begin at midnight your time!

Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas

Did you like the book overall or not?

Not really but I found it amusing.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

There really wasn't much BDSM in the book. For all the talk about Alpha status, there was no real D/s. There were some kink activities including bestiality, polyamory, restraint, and spanking but none of these were really done with serious D/s tones IMO.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Some of them I did. I didn't want to start this book. When I did I was shocked that there was sex on the first or second page.

Not only that, the girl had been in an accident, was hurt and having sex with a complete stranger while semi conscious. That the sex included a dogs (wolf's) knot and tongue was also shocking. I almost liked it for that because it was so blatant and in your face and unapologetic.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

The story was pretty shallow really. There were elements I liked, such as, people who thought they were unlovable finding out someone would and could love them as they were.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I would like to know what happens with everyone. I suspect they'll find others of their kind.

What did you like best about this selection?

The in your face bestiality and the no one can love me, wait, this person does, elements.

What did you like the least?

The story was too shallow. I really was disturbed by the whole, WAIT, I'm not gay or bi I just want to fuck the same sex, thing. What is so wrong with being gay or bi? If you want to fuck the same sex, don't blame it on being a wolf part of the time, be real about it and own it.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have liked to see a deeper story and less homophobia in my orgy of sex. LOL

Did you like the book overall or not?

No; I didn't even finish the book; I happen to like a story with my sex please.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No. It had kink but kink isn't bdsm. They were all equal most of the time; just kinky.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Not really. I like the people to have sex as part of a story; not a story that is part of the sex someone wants to write. I hope that makes sense. It had to much beastiality for my taste.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

I think if the author had spent as much time on the story as she did on the sex that the story would have been something I would have like to have read.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

No, I have had enough thank you.

What did you like best about this selection?

I liked the polyamoury and that it was ok.

What did you like the least?

I don't like a book that is full of sex without much of a story behind it. Now mind you I am not a prude, I love Laurell K. Hamilton's books so it isn't that I mind a lot of sex; I just mind a lot of sex when there is no story behind it.

How would you have changed the story?

I have to agree with fury; it needed a deeper plot.

I know! Why do people so often assume a sexy book doesn't need a decent plot or characters? This really bugs me!

Not really.

To quote FF "For all the talk about Alpha status, there was no real D/s". Some kinky sex, but BDSM? Not.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Eh. It started out okay, but after awhile I was bored of it.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Which story? Well, that's an oversimplification, but the basic story line was okay, she could have done a lot more, but she was too busy putting sex in it.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Well, I was curious about everyone else, so I read the next book. I wont' be wasting my time on anything else.

What did you like best about this selection?

I like FF's answer.

What did you like the least?

Most of it. It got boring REALLY fast.

How would you have changed the story?

A more in depth story line would have been nice.

Oh, and btw, FF? There's girl on girl sex later on in the series.

:rose:

It annoys me, but it annoys me even more when the plot line COULD have been so much more and they don't fulfill it's potential. That just REALLY annoys me.

True. The basic story could have really been something but NO, just an excuse for sex is fine.

*le sigh*

On and there was girl on girl action in this book too. LOL. In fact, that was when it got closest to D/s. I enjoyed that scene most!

:rose:

Now see i didn't get that far. I couldn't get over the wolf on human sex. The thing that bothered me is that she wanted to write about animal on human sex but she had to make it "ok" just like she did with the guy on guy sex. I think that she has kink but she has to justify it and it makes me wonder if she isn't willing to accept her own kink.

AbiNormal,

I know what you mean. It always saddens me when people can't accept who and what they are. All the justification for kink really bothered me.

Did you like the book overall or not?

I liked the book overall. It's not the most quality writing or the best plotline, but I found the sex scenes to be very hot and I liked the characters and seeing their relationships play out.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

I agree with others, while there was just about every kink and sexual interest represented, there wasn't much D/s at all.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

I really liked the sex scenes, despite the lack of literary merit and the author's preference for using certain phrases over and over and over--like someone's "pussy weeping," and someone being "almost preternaturally aware" of someone's something or other. A thesaurus might have worked well in some parts.

However, I liked the detail of the sex scenes and seeing everything spelled out for me. I really liked the telepathic sex they had--I thought it was imaginative and interesting.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

The story could have used some work, as others have noted. I did think the discussion of rape and how that affected Keisha and her life was insightful. It was also interesting to see how sex and erotic love was involved in her healing.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I'm planning to read the whole series, even with all its flaws. Reminds me of Twilight in that way.

What did you like best about this selection?

I liked the sex scenes. For the most part, they really made me hot or they interested me enough to go back and read them again. :D I also liked the variety of kinks represented. The backstory of the Chanku was interesting, but I could have used more detail and better description.

What did you like the least?

The writing wasn't very good. The dialogue was often wooden and unrealistic and most of the story was mediocre.

How would you have changed the story?

Like others have said, more story would have been useful. I also would have liked more background on the Chanku--as it was, it seemed fabricated and fake, only there to provide explanation and justification for the different sexual things they liked.
