The box office

giggles
It's true. Those books were one big homage to jesus and christianity. Blech. Him and CS Lewis... Two cases where the movies were better. Although Narnia is a great series, I just got tired of the constant overtones.

Then I have to bring up "The golden Compass" series as an opposite to both the movies/books above. The "Compass" series of books were awesome reads... the movie sucked.

My understanding of LOTR was that they had nothing to do with Christianity.
Narnia, on the other hand...
I was talking with someone and saying I should probably read those. They told me that, in one of the later (last?) books, one of the girls is, basically, sent to hell/rejected from heaven because she's 13 and wants to do girl things instead of being a warrior for Narnia.
Which I found morally repugnant and so, no, I won't be reading such crap.
(yes, i do understand that there's no end of christian thought that will support such an event, but fuck that too...)

I wasn't into JRR either until I attended a weekend long reading party....put a new light on it all...

:)

Sorry, I can't read hundreds of pages of people whining and missing 'elevensies'...Oh, look, here's more swamp.
Oh, look, more nothing.
Hey, lets really slow down the pacing here, we almost had an event.
;)

Random Movies Any Generic Top List Needs To Include:
Chinatown
Something by Hitchcock other than Psycho
Blade Runner
Unforgiven
Casablanca
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Jaws

Actually CS and JRR were good friends, seeking a way to introduce christianity to children without actually saying it's christian. Besides it's all there in the imagery. To wit- Gandolf sacrifices himself and is reborn. Return of the King? It's layered in there, I am sure we could find other parts as well.

Also-the older sister in Narnia? She loses her faith, becomes and atheist and can never return to Narnia- I believe it was Lewis's warning to children on the ills... blah blah blah...

Randall's words, not mine- but fucking apt.

I did not know that about JRR and CS!
though I think that JRR taps more into a mythic archetype more than a christian one...then again, that may be the movies more than the book.

CS can kiss my ass.
My holy ass, even ;)

Also, sometimes Randall kills me (and Sam was pretty gay)

My complaints precisely.
Frodo is told oh you're gonna have to get out of the shire and he waits three months before going. WTF JRR  You just sabotaged the sense of peril and suspense you desperately needed for your story.
and the story for Faramir in the movies is infinitely more preferrable to me the complete lack of any story for him in the books. Also the fact that he is not tempted by the ring in the books is another thing that sabotages the sense of peril and suspense Tolkien needed for the ring.
And the council of Rivendell scene should never have been played out the way he did it. The characters we need to focus on are completely drowned out by characters who don't matter and have no further place in the story beyond the council scene.
Tom Bombadil  WTF does that have to do with the story your telling JRR? Sure it has ring stuff in it, but the whole episode after the chase with the ringwraiths and becoming guests of Bombadil sabotaged the desperate hunted feel Tolkien needed to maintain from leaving the shire to meeting Aragorn at the prancing pony.

Don't get me wrong when it comes to world-building, and transporting you into the world of his story precious few fantasy writers come close to Tolkien's skills, but the man was no storyteller.

Oh my choices are all over the place. I love movies..I love old movies.

My favorite comedy of all time would be Cary Grant in Black Lace and Arsenic. It's just one fabulously funny movie. Bar the first few minutes, it's all done in one room. I believe it was originally a play. It's just got the best humor and Grant is sublime.

Favorite thrillers would again include Grant, in North by Northwest. It's got a bit of dark humor, but an amazing Hitchock movie.
Ransom with Mel Gibson. I just love that movie. I always enjoy Garry Sinese (sp) in most anything too.
I love Along came a spider with Morgan Freeman, and of course I just adore Shawshank Redemption.

I loved Silence of the Lambs, but have only seen it once, as it was too disturbing for me, but I still found it stunning.
As too Seven. It stuck with me for days after, so while I found it fantastic, it also only got one viewing.
Bone Collector would be another I love to see, as I love Denzil Washington in most of his movies, and Angelina Jolie.

Foregin Movies. The diving bell and the butterfly. Sad but true movie. Fascinating, very moving, very frustrating because I believe 'he' was an incredibly selfish man. Wonderful watch.
Also The Orphanage. Absolutely riveting. Feeds the longing for mystery and awe moments. Beautifully done.

Fantasy movies always get to me most. And the more childlike the better.

I'm a huge fan of the Princess Bride. I just love love love it.
Like wise Star Dust. Fills my longing for romance and fantasy.
I love the Goonies. I don't need the kids around to put it on. It's a good feel good movie with lots of little giggles.

And of course. Harry Potter. If wishes came true Id' be there.

I've lots of others, but I think that's enough for now.
Lovely topic Veroe. Great way to get tips for good films not seen yet.

Looking forward to seeing the Eagle starring Channing Tatum.
hoping its as good as I hope it is

Next movie after that looking forward to seeing is Rango.
I'm very interested in seeing it after learning of the intriguing method they made this film with. With live actors playing out the whole movie and the animators using it either by rote or by inspiration for the cartoon. I wonder how well they'll pull it off.

But why would they do that? I read that somewhere and I just couldn't understand 'why'.

Will no doubt go see with the kids when it's out though. They love J Depp.

Rango

nods head.

that's why it intrigues me. Will it improve performance quality when translated in a CGI cartoon with non-human characters like Cameron did with Avatar or they did in Beowulf? IDK, but I want to find out.

I think you mean 'Arsenic And Old Lace'

LOL..It depends on what side of the water you're on. It was marketed as Black Lace and Arsenic here originally way back when. That was the title I saw it under first time about 10 years ago here. But we get both titles now depending on what Chanel you watch it on. I just know it as that, and would have to think of the more US name.

Funny how titles change from country to country.
Like Harry Potter and the Sorceror's stone here in the US is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone in the UK.

Why the title change? IDK, works for me under either name.

Uh huh. I know. There are others, but I'd have to think on them.

But yeah, makes no difference whats so ever.

Well, in the Potter instance, it might make sense.
'sorcerer's stone' has meaning here, where as 'philosopher's stone' might not (how many kids know the legend/myth?)
Worse...in the US, we hate smart people and philosophers are smart people...

True, too true.
We in the US hate smartypants people.
Just look at our senate and wall street, no smartypants people allowed.

The sad thing is that most of them ARE smart...they just have to hide it.

Nothing kills this country more, imho, than the rabid anti-intellectualism that seems built into our culture...

I really want to watch Monster vs. Aliens again

nods. that was surprisingly good, Pen.

I just saw the Thor and Captain America and Green Lantern trailers on youtube and am excited. This summer is gonna be the summer of superheroes. :D

I'm a sucker for Pixar films and Monsters vs. Aliens was very funny (especially Hugh Laurie :D)

Links?

though, to be honest, I find Captain America to be stunningly irrelevant.
For, like, 20 years now.
Maybe 30.
His 'death' was the only significant thing about the character in a generation.

Veroe, what did you think of the Hulk movies. I liked the one with Liv Tyler, but not the one where Hulk battled the gamma ray infected poodles.

I won't argue with you on that, though with Ed Brubaker's run writing for him, which the death of cap was the centerpeice of, he's become more and more relevant for me. He treats Cap like a star-spangled spy thriller and it works really well IMO.

Ed Norton-the best Bruce Banner so far since Bill Bixby
Liv Tyler-best Betty Ross
William Hurt-best General Ross
The Aang Lee one had the best Hulk moments ie Hulk vs. tanks, fighters, and whatnot. I was disapointed in the end of the Ed Norton one when they were fighting the Abomination in New York. Those two guys fighting in the middle of new york: there was nowhere near enough carnage, destruction, and collateral damage to buildings and cars and things.
Mark Ruffalo-waiting to see.

So far I maintain the best Hulk movies yet made is the animated films Hulk Vs. and Planet Hulk.
