The "Fuck you Covid19" thread

I'm glad to hear you have been protesting. My family has been helping with ckean up and providing safe refuge.

We are living in crazy times. I'm expecting a lot if new cases in the next weeks. I wonder if we are truly at an inflection point. It is hard to see what comes next.

Black lives matter.
No justice. No peace.

When covid first started earlier this year it looked like it was going to be the best friend of dictators and dictator-wannabes. Protests around the world that were on the brink of transforming entrenched political regimes, then lockdowns were imposed, people arrested, pogroms unleashed. Now, it seems the tides are turning again as people have now had a few months to reflect, organize, and now explode onto the streets.

Power to the people to break their chains and ... yeah, fuck covid!

I hope you are right.

Fuck Covid19

Last night my church council, comprised of mostly elderly folk with a range of underlying health conditions, voted to resume indoor, in-person worship as soon as it's allowed to resume in NJ. We'll take all the precautions we can, but I'm really wishing they'd made a different decision. It feels like we're getting complacent.

Oh dear God.

I hope that your congregation will forego any singing, passing of the peace, communion.

Congregate worship has proven to be one of the most risky activities we can participate in re the transmission of this virus.

Please take care of yourself and try to take care of your church community.

There will be no singing, masks will be required, pews will be taped off, no handshakes, no coffee hour, everything in the sanctuary will be drenched in purell before and after each service... We still need to figure out the logistics of communion. We're going to take every precaution we can. But yeah, I'm still worried.

I wear a mask everywhere I go, to protect others. Problem is, the others aren't wearing theirs. My fervent hope is that my mask will give me some small measure of protection.

So we're now officially Corona-free ... life is sliding back into 'normal', with the exception of the closed borders (and consequently a massive hit to tourism). I hope it's not too long before everyone can say that, or least something along those lines.

Hope it stays that way but I know that's impossible once the borders reopen.

Glad someone is making progress. The US is still growing with no end in sight and we have the group that thinks it is all a hoax to deny them their rights.

There's a pretty strict two-week quarantine process in place at the moment for anyone who comes in. James Cameron and the crew filming Avatar were allowed in, but they had to isolate for two weeks. Obviously not feasible for tourists, but there's talk of opening up a 'trans-Tasman bubble' if Australia gets to the same point - some fairly significant chunk of our respective tourism markets and other travel is between NZ and Australia, so that will help the situation.
It feels so weird dividing the world up in to segments like this, but it does make sense. I still can't really work out what the long term plan is though, because at some point the countries that didn't have our luck will reach some level of herd immunity that we won't have - are we keeping the borders permanently closed until there's a vaccine? I actually don't know the answer to that question.

Oh, we have that group here too. Apparently it was all a plot to keep us indoors so we wouldn't notice the 5G towers being erected everywhere.

a report from Arizona

Dear Arizona,

I’ve spent the last five years completing my medical training at some of the finest hospitals in the Valley. In that time, I’ve seen incredible cases, with some great saves as well as my fair share of death. It all pales in comparison to the last three months of my career. I’ve spent the better part of that time in the ICU dealing with Covid-19. The physical, mental and emotional toll of this pandemic has been heavy on me, as it has my colleagues. I see it in their eyes. In the tones of their voices. Something has changed. It’s not just profound fatigue, it’s resignation. Resignation to the fact that patients continue to pile in, at an exponentially increasing rate. That some of these patients are the sickest that we’ve ever seen. To the fact that our community has seemingly abandoned us and many are convinced that one of the most difficult & turbulent periods of modern history is somehow a hoax or conspiracy. The irony of being called a healthcare hero does seem to echo rather hollowly. That voices of medicine, science & reason are being drowned out by the incessant nonstop drone of conflict, division and partisanship.

The system was never designed for a pandemic, that much is clear. That is a discussion for another time. The Governor’s statements and actions have been a matter of grave consternation to healthcare workers all over the state. Nero fiddles as Rome burns. The number of cases in AZ have climbed by nearly 300% since May 1st and have roughly doubled since Memorial Day, according to data from Hopkins. In the last twenty four hours, there have been 1014 new cases. For a moment, please try to fathom the kind of stress that is placing on our healthcare system. Our ICU’s are almost full. AZ hospitals are at above 80 percent capacity at this time. Clinical staff are stretched thin everywhere. The thing with these patients is that they consume a ton of resources and manpower because of how sick they are. They also have very protracted hospital courses. The average patient usually requires 3-5 days to come off the vent. Covid patients require weeks to wean off the vent which creates a myriad of associated issues. Severe deconditioning, delirium and multiorgsn failure are commonplace. These patients often require deep sedation. Unfortunately many IV infusions typically used in the ICU such as Fentanyl, Nimbex are in shortage on a global scale. Hospitals have dealt with drug shortages for decades and the influx of critically ill patients has made it much worse. I continue to pray that I will never have to keep someone awake on the ventilator due to a lack of medication availability like other colleagues in Covid hotspots have. Non critical care nurses are being trained to bolster our nurses. Similarly, physicians from all specialties prime themselves to practice a type of medicine that they may not have signed up for. I keep hearing people talk about a second wave that is going to hit but we’re still floundering in the first one.

To my fellow citizens who feel that it is okay to ignore the warnings of health officials, doctors and scientists by refusing to wear masks, social distancing and other basic measures; please for a moment, consider the repercussions of your actions. Yes, you are young and healthy and you will likely have a mild illness but are you willing to put your elderly grandparents at risk? Or your parents who most likely will have some form of comorbidity that will increase their susceptibility to severe illness. Or a younger sibling who may have asthma. If you are a parent, are you willing to risk exposing your child to Covid, especially as more and more cases of a syndrome known as Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PMIS) are being reported. Also, please recognize that being young and healthy does not mean you will not contract a severe infection. This is not a hoax. There is no financial incentive for physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers in this. There is no magical drug for Covid-19 regardless of what politicians and Big Pharma tout. At the end of the day, if your loved one ends up in my ICU and requires intubation, mechanical ventilation, ECMO, CRRT or other invasive therapies, will you be able to resign yourself to the fact that you will not be able to come into the hospital and hold their hand or tell them you love them? Can you accept the fact that if despite all our efforts, we fail and your loved one dies, a stranger in a space suit will hold up an IPhone so that you can FaceTime for the last time before we proceed to take your loved one off life support? If you still believe this is a giant conspiracy, maybe consider volunteering at your local hospital or clinic to see what the ground realities are because nothing I say will be able to change your mind at this point. In the meantime, we will continue to weather the storm and brace for difficult days ahead.

Sincerely,

A tired Critical Care fellow

Oh CB, you make me feel helplessly inadequate to give the proper encouragement in the face of this horrible pandemic. I feel anything said by anyone isn't enough. You need extra everything from supplies to personnel to time for your own life and it's all been swept under the rug because of bureaucracy and shameful political posturing.

All I can do is say thank you. We are here if you need us.

Infection rate 3% and rising. Saturday the clown show comes to town. Just swell...

CB Thank you for a dose of reality. Not necessarily what we want to hear but it is what we need to hear. My heart aches for all the people who are so sick but also for you health care workers who are bearing the brunt of this pandemic. Thanks are inadequate but it is all I can offer at this point. I do promise to do all I can to elect some officials that will at least try to come to grips with our new reality And of course just to make your job a little easier. It is Wild Fire Season here in AZ.

Seemed like things were going pretty well in my state, but they eased up restrictions a bit and people got careless and now the case rate is rising again. Currently around 20/day so not huge by US standards, but enough to feel threatening.

Nobody wears masks :-/

Given the state of things, you'd think doing nothing would not be an option. You'd be wrong. Jesus wept.

I am needing to vent about the crafting Karens who have laminated themselves these tiny little cards stating they're exempt from wearing a mask and that it's illegal to ask them about it.

Fuck you for using the Americans with Disabilities Act to parade around selfishly with an air of entitlement to skirt the rules. I saw a friend of mine who wasn't wearing a mask and she mentioned she can't and the store isn't allowed to question her. I explained that's not the rule, they just have to make reasonable accommodation for her disability. A guy with cerebral palsy rolled by with a face shield on. I suggested that as an option and she admitted she just didn't want to wear a mask. I'm pretty fucking disappointed.

I have asthma and sensitive ears (it's a thing). I have to wear a mask to do my job. Some days, depending on the procedure, I have to wear two. If I can stand in the same square for seven hours in a face mask, you can fucking put one on to buy your freaking milk. Or better yet, opt for curbside delivery. I live in the middle of BFE and our local store will deliver to your car if you need for no charge. There's no excuse for not wearing a mask in the store. Unless you're an asshole.
