Home sewn masks:
Real need or busy work for the public? Can't decide whether to dust off the sewing machine or not. I'm reading that masks really don't do much for protection/prevention of transmission.
I think the jury is out on this one.
Hand sewn surgical masks sewn out of tight weave cotton fabric or hanes type t-chirt material has been shown to be 60% effective than no mask at all.
If the public would wear hand sewn masks rather than using real medical supplies, may help keep front line providers in supplies longer. My office is considering making hand sewn masks for clerical workers, and other staff that are not providing direct care to patients who are infectious. Yet to be determined.
I do know that people are looking for something they can DO. We all feel pretty helpless in the face of this, and therefore making masks and giving them to your friends/ family so they have something that at least reminds them to not touch their face and help keep their germs to themselves is a pretty good idea. If you are going to do this, think about 3 per person - one to wear, one to be dirty and ready for wash and one that is ready to wear. Remind people that masks are no substitute for social distancing.
