4. I'm of two thoughts here. Or maybe three. If the recipients make their own, you run into the inevitable comparison problem. If yours are better, then it's a potential oneupmanship issue. If theirs are better, then you feel bad. OTOH, if they're not at all the artisanal type of consumer, you'll probably feel the gift of your love and labor is unappreciated. In the long run, consider each potential recipient and make your decision for each one based on what you know about them. I can tell you that YK and I appreciate such things tremendously, because we feel the giver has given us a part of him/herself rather than something from a mass market retailer.

I'm due to get an iphone today to replace my useless blackberry.

I'm toxic to technology - when I press buttons, all the wrong things happen. I manage to break things without even trying. So I'm sort of looking forward to it arriving, but a bit concerned about the trouble I will inevitably get myself into

I found the coolest language game ever! You have to listen to samples and then select which language it is. There are many samples of each language, so you can take it many times and it still doesn't become a simple memory test.

Now that I read what I just wrote, it doesn't sound too cool. But it is, at least for me. My highscore so far (3 attempts) is 1200. Finally something, where the comparative phonetics class is useful!

Sometimes you get a streak of easy languages, sometimes you get a streak of really obscure Polynesian languages that all sound very similar. Especially if you have to choose from 10 options, over half of which are languages you've never even heard of.

I still haven't managed to get over that 1200, I usually make that third blunder around 900-1000. The 1200 points happened only because I got a long streak of Indo-European languages, which are pretty easy for me to recognize.

So far my high score was 650 and I think that's pretty good for a guy who has had no direct contact with any languages not spoken in North America and only a very thin familiarity with the sounds of a few of the major Asian languages.

It is really good!

I've studied phonetics, which meant I listened to and parsed a lot of strange languages. I'm used to finding patterns, tones and especially sounds that correspond to languages of a certain area. Like Mandarin, Cantonese and South East Asian languages are tonal, languages spoken around India have a lot of retroflex sounds etc. They also mention familiar words sometimes, that help. Like New Zealand for Maori and Maribor for Slovenian.

But with Polynesian languages I'm at a loss, as well as with many African languages. I can usually place the language somewhere in that general region (not always, though), but it really doesn't help, if I have to choose from South Efati, Tongan and Samoan.

I get easily fascinated with languges, especially with the sounds of them. I've way too often stayed in tram past my stop, just because I've wanted to eavesdrop someone speaking a cool language that I didn't even understand. Twice I've even had to ask what the languge I was eavesdropping was: Mongolian and Georgian.

I only got 250 my first time through. I'm not surprised. I've never been good at hearing languages. I lived in Germany for 3 years and by the end I could read and write enough to get by but I was never able to carry on a real conversation. (unless it had something to do with ordering food or drink)
