Ive had that issue. The two homes I've owned, with fireplaces, the "flaunching" (?) was in a poor state.

The 1st home, I was selling because of a divorce. I sprayed a bunch of yellow, expanding foam in the cracks. It looked like shit, but it worked. The 2nd? I fixed it right, but I love my house and my wife. The 1st? I did not love my ex wifes house..
