The Nail Thread

mine too, though I like purple too, especially on toe nails. So not a purple fan, huh? what was the brand/shade? long shot, but I have a lot of polish, I might be familiar and have a close suggestion. You said you primarily used Essie and Mavala. I stand a chance if it is Essie.

Going off the cuff, if you like the metallic in the deep ruby red heading towards vampy, but not to the purple side, have you looked at Zoya Blair? It is a metallic blackened red wine, but not so blackened that the blue undertones in black made it plummish. It has a lot of depth, is nearing the vampy side but leans more brown than most in that set, kind of straddling the line of red and dark red.

it is the one on the left. you can see how it shifts more brown than purple like most do as they get dark

and someones color swatch.

it is a shade that springs to mind when I think closest to the line but not crossing it with too much blue to darken it

Sadly it was by a local brand and something like 8 years ago. It was a Christmas special, and every year after it I've looked if they would have brought it back. It's entirely possible I wouldn't even like it as much now as I did back then, but it's become a holy grail of mine.

The Zoya you linked is very pretty! Sadly Zoya doesn't seem to be readily available in stores here. I'd have to order it online. And if I open that Pandora's box there might not be coming back and I'm gonna need a cabinet like yours in no time. :D

I also like the metallic red I posted a while ago. It doesn't go towards purple either. I don't have an issue with purple. I'm general, but it's just not always what I want. Pinks tend to go towards yellow and reds towards purple when they dry on my nails. Those are the woes I have.

At least I finally found a nice Christmas red last year. It looks a little too orange in the bottle but when it dries on my nails it's perfect. I'll have to whip it out soon!

And thank you for all your insight! It's great that you found this thread! :)

Spectacular Jdfm.
Thank you.

Yes, I am an internet shopper mostly. Store have customers, and lines, and employees who keep trying to help me lol. And yes, I need another cabinet. ;)

I am very happy that a fellow litster pointed this thread pointed out to me. I wish there were more participants, but the fact that it exists at all on a place like Lit is awesome.

NEVER! Screws are for shop furniture. built by the lazy.

Indeed, many times Shaker pieces would have pegs inserted to strengthen a mortise-and-tenon joint. So yes, they do sometimes need pegging. My workbench/assembly table has pegged joints, in fact.

Generally, I use a claw hammer. But I haven't used nails in a piece of furniture in decades and when I did, they were cut nails from a source that's no longer in business. Most nails these days are made from steel wire and don't hold very well. Cut nails are actually forged and have straight sides. They hold incredibly well.

Lee Valley. https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/fasteners/nails/40387-square-cut-nails

And, I can highly recommend an English pattern cross peen nailing hammer for fine work. I got mine at Amazon.

Or, you might find a hardware store frequented by Amish / Mennonites. The one near me stocks amazing stuff. (But no nail polish).

Lee Valley is great. I've bought a number of their Veritas tools over the years. I forgot they do hardware too.

So, when am I going to see some blinged out nails guys?

Thank you.

That Litster was a truly great guy I'm sure. Er person. I meant person.

Anyway, I have some beautiful vintage spiral ardox galvanized here that are just amazing...

Blue this week

That is a pretty blue, what is it?

haha, Well, ye.s he is. Plus now everyone can blame you for my presence here lol.
And now I am googling and looking at pictures of actual hardware nails. Well, it is probably good to google something that is not pornographic occasionally.

Bloody Halloween nails with glow in the dark.

Whoa, that's really cool! It really looks bloody and like you've killed someone with those dagger nails!

I cut my nails short and painted them, but this is just sad and boring compared to that awesomeness.

I did my toes with the same concept but I used blue and silver, because I'm desperately trying to use up the bottle of blue.

Thanks. that was indeed the look I was going for. Now, when I redo them tomorrow, do I keep the daggers is the question?

I really like the half/half middle nail you have going. Do you use striping tape or anything kind of tape? Don't tell me you freehand that straight.

Side note for any ladies reading.
Zoya, code Fun is good for 50% off polish, so $5 a bottle. shipping is $6.95 unless you hit $55 after code, so 11 bottles. Zoya is primarily a salon and spa polish. What I like is the staying power which is very good, especially when considering it is one of those natural, 10free, vegan polishes. I especially like them for their metallics, leopard spot topper, sparkle gloss topper, and pixie texture. What I like the least is they come with a smaller brush, which while useful for nail art but takes more strokes when painting a nail so I usually prefer wide. They do sell wide brushes, but I am lazy and cheap lol. https://www.zoya.com/content/category/Category_ShopNailPolish.html?col=ZP859

colorclub's halloween sale is likely ending soon. the sale has some $5 bottles. code Nailpolishaddict220 will give another 20% off, so $4 bottles. This is another salon polish mainly but walmart carries a couple for $7. I also get long wear out of these. I really like them for their halos and oil slick style multichromatics. free ship at $30 after code so 8 bottles (or 7 and a stamp plate) https://colorclub.com/collections/5-halloween-favorites

Can you function in your every day life with the daggers? I think I'd have a lot of trouble doing anything at all with them and not scrape myself bloody in the process. It's a cool look though, I just wouldn't be able to pull it off myself.

It feels very odd to have short nails now. Just typing on my phone is more difficult somehow, although I think it should be easier. It's been a while since I've had nails this short.

I used just regular masking tape. I have a roll of tape that's barely adhesive. It was like this when I bought it and it's been absolutely useless in everything but the odd times I've used it on my nails. It's perfect for that.

So many cool colors and effects in those links of yours. Good thing I don't live in the US! (If they do ship here, nobody tell! :D)

I did end up deciding to dull the points. I wasn't stabbing myself as much as I expected, however it did happen more than I'd like. When you are used to nails, you use them as tools and you hold your fingers differently. People ask how I type, I type with my nails. I also use them to open things, clean or scrape things, pull on something small like one would use a tweezers, I remember them working well as a joint clip and not burning my fingers, use them as a screwdriver, etc. Going to short nails would be a change no doubt.

and lol. Luckily, I do not know the foreign shipping policies.

I replaced the halloween nails. I filed off the points, then went with the current bored mom nail challenge which was to use our least favorite polish in a way we like. Well, my least favorite polish would be any gel polishes I have left in a box that a coworker didn't take, however, I am only willing to suffer so much. Thus, I have this kind of khaki one. it is CND Brimstone. It is just so boring. So I topped it with shifting iridescent flakes and paired it with a halo dark green blue, and a halo glitter gold, rose gold. I like shifty colors.

not sure what I think. I don't think it is boring though.

Not boring! What do you use to get the lines so even?

My daughters have pointed out to me that all of my nail colors are slightly different variations of the same color. Hey, I know what I like. And I like frosty mauves.

Seela: I really like Gingersnap! It’s warm and really does make me think of sugar glistening on cookies. The frosty lilac is also pretty, but I feel like would be harder to wear.

Orchidea73: the blue and yellow is really fun! Definitely standing out this season. :)

ToPleaseHim: I do that too. I have WAY TOO MANY colors in the same family with the tiniest variations.

The red is current, unfortunately I had to remove it from my finger nails as I used a bad base coat and it peeled off in big sheets. Not a good look. I love the color though, I got it to replace Wined-Up from Sally Hansen. The pink nails (not current) are one of my favored looks. I tend to refer to them in my mind as “princess nails.”

I like both of those colors, Meeks!

I like the lilac I'm wearing, but it peels off. The instructions on the bottle say apply two coats, no bottom coat. I used bottom coat on a few fingers and left it off from the others. All of them are peeling off. I have to redo my nails tomorrow, good thing I'm working from home so nobody will have to look at my nails in this gross state.

I also chipped the nail on my middle finger so now it's a lot shorter than the other nails. It was a tad shorter already, because for whatever reason it's the slowest to grow. Probaly because I flip people off so often.

@Meek: I do love pastel colors. They are very elegant and they go practically with every outfit.

That's a bright combo! Reminds me of Sweden. :)

Did you go with black or deep red?

Ahahah didn't thought about it but yo are right. lol

Black, though there is a slightly red nuance to it.

I did them myself though. I am going black, or black and white for hands. But I am doing them at the saloon tomorrow.

After being sick I tend to go all out trying to get back to normal. Part of that is nail grooming. Here’s the current look: Essie in Imported Bubbly for base and A Cut Above accent. I think I’m going to regret leaving them this long, I’m bound to break one or two this week. Pictured here.

^Pretty nails and colors!

Black Twist by Mavala. It's a strange color, because it looks plain silver, then it looks black with gold, then it gets a slightly green hue... It seems to be so many things at once depending on the light.

Black Twist reminds me of this great color I had that I can’t find a replacement for. It had a multicolored shimmer with a black base. Like a peacock Tahitian pearl.
