The Nail Thread

Kink shaming from the former playgrounders privileged thread. So much for inclusion and acceptance. Thanks gurls but no thanks.

Thank you justa for keeping it real and normal, true beauty, true self and fucking beautiful nails on your hands and (gasp) feet!

Mehbe Lau will give them their safe space back again, smh.

Yeah, not the Playground.

Calling it a “safe space” says you know exactly what you did wrong. If you want fetish material go to the Fetish board. Don’t harass the contributors of this thread to get your jollies.

I have learned it is a rarity apparently.

well, to me, the concepts of polish is basically the same as any enamel paint. The things that need to be considered are dirt, water, oil, other residues, existing finish, high humidity, primer, weak points. So I found don't paint my nails outside on the porch without the AC the humidity is too high. Next, polish will work better on a less smooth finish. If I really want it to last, I do a quick rough buff with a nail buffer, and not the smooth and shine steps. I don't usually buff because I am also that girl who tends to peel off her polish when it starts to chip, but giving them a little texture will help. Polish doesn't want to stick to cuticles, but water soaking or oils are what is used to push cuticles back, but nails are porous so doing it before painting will hurt the adherence of polish. Thus, I will push them down in the shower the day before or early that day and try to avoid prolonged water contact in the hour or two prior to painting. I still need to clean them prior to painting though obviously, but don't want water or any residue, so I clean them prior with just pure acetone. Not the frilly nourishing, strengthening, or scented polish removers because they add oils, silicone, and glycerin which is what I want to strip. I actually buy acetone from the hardware store. It is much cheaper than pure acetone in the beauty store, and it comes in child proof and fire resistant containers. Many would argue the pure acetone in hardware stores is more likely to have worse binding impurities than the beauty store, nothing is 100% pure after all, but even letting shot glasses sit and evaporate, I personally saw or felt no difference between a beauty store one and the jasco acetone from lowes. If I was anti acetone, I'd go the purest rubbing alcohol that I could find instead. Something fast evaporating, rather dehydrating, with low residue. After the drying/cleaning substance evaporates, a primer is next. Not only does it help prevent staining, but it also helps polish adhere, just as primer is for enamel paint. Next, 2 color coats, also trying to wipe across the weak point of polish at the edge of the nail tips. Then top coat, where not only do I cover the edge, but I will roll down to the underside. I usually do 2 top coats as well. If I am trying to get near a month out of it, I will paint a top coat every weekend.

If I want polish to chip in like a week, I just wash my hands and dry them with a paper towel, and skip the base coat if the color is not a staining risk (reds, blues, blacks are prone to staining) then slap some polish on and a top coat. Skipping the drying, base coat, and wrapping over the tip really reduces the longevity. Again though, certain polishes do perform better, so even with the same technique, one kind may only make it 2 weeks, where as another is 3 to 4. Of course, back when I could still wear gel polish, that was even longer, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn't recommend regular use of gel.

Thank you. I never quite got the hang of wrapping the polish down to underside. I don't think I have with dexterity to be able to do that.

During spring and summer I love colours, so I change a lot.
During fall and winter though I stick with deep red but mainly with black and white.

Very pretty and they pair so well with your rings.

A random nail pic on my way to work. I quickly slathered this on this morning, I still have to clean the edges.

I really like the color, and the street view. It is so historic.

I've developed a bad habit of stress scraping off my nail polish again.

So, silver it is! I hope this one lasts at least a few days now. 😔

It’s a little old now but yeah, metallics are great for staying power. I’m a huge fan of copper on my skin tone and couldn’t resist “Worth a Pretty Penne” by OPI.

Pretty! I had a lovely pale copper as well, but it got all gooey and gloggy. There was very little left in the bottle, so I just got rid of it.

Getting rid of nail polish is so difficult. Toxic waste.

I'm considering using traditional cut nails for an upcoming project in the Shaker style. Anyone have experience with particular brands? I've heard that thete are great ones made in France but they are a little cher, as they complain in Paris.

Look at you being all Mr Smartypants. :p

Go with screws.

a very pretty yet reserved pink

quite a change from the pink.

I love metallics for that reason. Same with holos and glitters.

In my opinion, when it comes to nails, it is often less the brand and more how you use them. So, how do you nail?

Not to take away from the post but I really like your avatar pic.

Thank you. It is my Halloween costume from last year, Ghost of Bloody Mary. I am a giant child when it comes to my love of costumes. No plans to go to the neighbors 50th anniversary party. Here it is 60s costume themed, hell yeah, I am so there. This was one of my favorites, I tend to like dark and creepy the best, though my flasher costume was hysterical. Now, it is based on what my kid picks to wear, but years ago, I used to volunteer to work haunted houses just so I wear scary costumes lol. nails are always part of the costume, so it actually fits with the thread.

So prepping for my Halloween manicure which involves smear badly removed vampy red and then blood dripping down. Will do that in two weeks, but might as well do the vampy red to smear.

Color club We'll Never Be Royals. It is part of the oil slick collection and is part of the halloween sale. You can also find additional 20% coupons all over retailmenot bringing it to $4. Free ship at $30 after the 20% so $38 needed in cart... Ie 8 sale bottles or a mix of bottles and sale stamp plates. I really do like their holos and shifty ones.

Hard to capture but can be a deep purple in some light, a vampy red in most, then almost a ruby red in others. Multiple light sources and it appears gradient or oil slick. It is super shiny. It is marked as holo but I think the microglitter is too fine without being really close and staring.

Now, I am wondering if I should leave it or do something flashy with the ring finger.

That's a really cool color!

Deep ruby red is one of my favorite colors for nails, but it's hard to find one that doesn't go too purple to my tastes. I had a perfect one years ago but it was a limited edition and I used it up.

mine too, though I like purple too, especially on toe nails. So not a purple fan, huh? what was the brand/shade? long shot, but I have a lot of polish, I might be familiar and have a close suggestion. You said you primarily used Essie and Mavala. I stand a chance if it is Essie.

Going off the cuff, if you like the metallic in the deep ruby red heading towards vampy, but not to the purple side, have you looked at Zoya Blair? It is a metallic blackened red wine, but not so blackened that the blue undertones in black made it plummish. It has a lot of depth, is nearing the vampy side but leans more brown than most in that set, kind of straddling the line of red and dark red.

it is the one on the left. you can see how it shifts more brown than purple like most do as they get dark

and someones color swatch.

it is a shade that springs to mind when I think closest to the line but not crossing it with too much blue to darken it

Go with screws.

NEVER! Screws are for shop furniture. built by the lazy.

And here I thought Shaker style would need pegging :D

Indeed, many times Shaker pieces would have pegs inserted to strengthen a mortise-and-tenon joint. So yes, they do sometimes need pegging. My workbench/assembly table has pegged joints, in fact.

In my opinion, when it comes to nails, it is often less the brand and more how you use them. So, how do you nail?

Generally, I use a claw hammer. But I haven't used nails in a piece of furniture in decades and when I did, they were cut nails from a source that's no longer in business. Most nails these days are made from steel wire and don't hold very well. Cut nails are actually forged and have straight sides. They hold incredibly well.

Lee Valley. https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/fasteners/nails/40387-square-cut-nails

And, I can highly recommend an English pattern cross peen nailing hammer for fine work. I got mine at Amazon.

Or, you might find a hardware store frequented by Amish / Mennonites. The one near me stocks amazing stuff. (But no nail polish).
