The above image shows some type of social strata British attitude to dealing with home heating.

Tonight I am cold for the first time this season and G is not here. Do I need another dog or some extra cats? Or to bundle up in more clothes? My hands are blue but I wore a t shirt today and was ok, its all too quick. :) I will put back the nice top I put out for going out tomorrow and get out lots of layers. And big socks.

Hah, that picture epitomizes how I imagine British winter to be like. :) I've never been there personally, but a friend of mine worked there for 2 years and her house was insanely cold (and had carpeting in the bathroom).

The lack of proper heating in winter in (I assume) most parts of the world even when it's cold is astonishing to me. When I lived elsewhere, people time and again wondered about my complaints about how cold it is all the time. "You're from Finland, how can you say it's cold?" I slept wearing mittens, how can I not complain. :)

Even though I have lit fires I WILL not put on heating in this country before October, then I make sort of competition with my self for how long I can last.. . Houses like this, ultimately, were designed to be kept warm by fires in fireplaces each and every day.....constant low heat.

Modern building regulations require better insulation and glazing standards etc. I think the other thing here its its a short season for nice dry icey cold or snowing cold, but most winter is damp and 'rheumatic'. That damp cold really seeps into your body and makes your very bones cold.

I have a similar "competition", but with the AC. I refuse to turn it on until after Memorial Day (usually around May 30), or it's hit 100F. ;)

fuck you emotions. fuck you straight to hell.

And you can take crazy hot guys with fucked up home situations with you too.

On another note, I think I could pull off the faux-hawk if I actually put a bit of effort into it.

Gah, my mother does this. My philosophy is that I'm going to have to pay the power bill either way, so I might as well be comfortable. :p

Hmm. If we did this our bills would very easily be three thousand or so for the winter. I can really think of more interesting things to do with any portion of that money. If I knock a fifth /quarter off that for a few years its a window repair or replace for one of the sash windows, for example.

I quite enjoy the discomfort. Sometimes. When we had ice on the inside of windows I found it so heartbreakingly beautiful at sunrise I would feel sad for all the people that never experience these joys.

( but then I'd think about washing my hair in the freezing house). The time our lavatory froze solid for a number of days was both an adventure and a little uncomfortable. I'm glad it happened, but it would not want it to be life forever.

That makes sense. :)

I should've probably pointed out in my earlier post that my apartment is tiny--like, I sincerely doubt it comes anywhere near 1000 sq. ft.--and fairly well-insulated, the windows excepted.

Still, the power bill's higher in the summer than any other time. (I've got an electric heat pump for air and heat, like most people in this part of the world.) My summer bills are usually about twice as high as my winter ones. (Thank you, The South. )
