The Official Authors' Hangout Summer Lovin' 2024 Contest Support Thread

The link leads me to a place where they give the monthly winners for 2022. For 2023, only January is given. Or Am I misinterpreting the information?
No. The site is slow to update the monthly contest Information, is all. It's safe to say, "It's not current," but that doesn't mean it's cancelled.

That's as recently as it's been updated. And if you think that is frustrating, imagine how I feel, I published three stories in 2023 that were the highest scoring for their months.

If we all put down our keyboards and stopped writing new stuff, then maybe Laurel would have time to go back over what we already wrote! I'm sure monthly contests are near the bottom of her 'what's on my to-do list today'!

There's nothing to prevent you from sending her a polite DM that says something like "I'm new here, what's with the monthly contest?" She can be very responsive.

I have an idea for a pure writers event. There would be no scoring (because nobody wins an event anyhow) if you like the story you comment on it, if you don't like the story you comment on it. I'd also like to see no anonymous comments. A Troll proof atmosphere.

Thoughts?

That can already be set up in the settings by saying no to anons. However, it takes nothing to set up a Hotmail or Gmail acct, so it won't be totally troll proof.

And how are you going to ensure no anonymous commenting - is there a way to block that?

Yes and no. You can go into your options and turn that off for all stories, which sometimes is not a bad idea. But the easy way is to moderate your comments and delete comment without a user name. I tend to do that with anonymous comments that contain the words "If it were me..."

You can also do it for individual stories when you post them under advanced options.

I get two fifths of fuck all comments anyway, so that really wouldn't make a difference.

If I shut out anonymous comments, I'd get even fewer than the pittance I currently get. No thanks.

Also, I'm on "Team There-Are-Probably-Too-Many-Events-Already." So. There's that.

I love these contests, not for the competition but for the chance to read such a variety of work on a theme. They are so much fun, and this time around, they are so very hot.

However, I am actually in competition with myself. For each story I write, I don't spend too much time dwelling on the score; it's the views. Yes, I know the number of views does not mean the number of reads, but I like to watch my newest stories catch up and pass my older stories in clicks. I feel that's an indicator that I've got a few more people interested in my work and that I have captured their interest, at least to visit the story, if not stay.

In many ways, I feel like a shopkeeper hoping my window display will draw in foot traffic and I'll get new customers through that traffic.

My current summer story submission, Summer's Island, is about to move into 6th place on my list of 12 works, and I hope it will be in my top 5 by the time October arrives.

To test the intensity of the genres here on LE, I wrote a somewhat perverse Mother story last summer. While it is not my highest score, it had a hell of a lot of clicks (for me), and I doubt I will ever catch the viewership on that story's all-time list unless I return to that genre. I am so competitive against myself I might do just that.

So, if it's competition you love, then try competing against yourself. The best part about it will be the best author you know going head to head with the best author on LE. Win-win!

Nicely said, Wendy. I do that in every contest and often in an event versus my previous stories in an earlier iteration of the same event. It's a nice way to track one's growth over time through common stats rather than trying to compare to other writers since each writer's background, focus, and writing style may be so different.

I’ve just been swept. Lost 7 votes and popped from 4.72 to 4.80.
Well, I didn't even expect a 4 with my story. I put a husband/wife romance in Loving Wives. How evil is that?
My second story is being ignored by readers and Laurel's troops.

I've had a few votes drop away over the past couple days and my score has risen accordingly. Not quite the "H," but at least a little closer to how my more recent stories tend to score.
Keep watching the scores, it's going to get interesting over the next 24 hours.

Haha, you're right. I checked just now. A couple more knocked off, and "Storyteller" is now above the "H" threshold.

Not that it's all important, but I was trying to get a handle on this story for over a year, and it ended up being a lot of work even after I figured it out. It's nice to see that people responded well to it.
