The Official Valentine’s Day Contest Support Thread 2026

I haven't deleted a story, but I'll admit I've thought about it. It's more related to me wondering if I should focus this account on LGBTQ romance and have another one for the kind of smutty stuff that was in my first stories here. But I think I'll keep them. Just doesn't feel right to take them down, they're part of my history here.

Regarding ratings, I'm a bit peeved over my Valentine's story now, as it been getting voted slowly but surely down into the 4.6ties after entering the LS top list at 4.96 with 100 votes. It's not that I thought it would win, I absolutely didn't expect placing because the story is so sad and teary (and discusses suicide ) but the thing is that it's got over 50 comments that are all very positive. I'd actually love to hear from the people downvoting, what it is that they don't like. Since none of them bother to roast me in the comments, I get the feeling that the vast majority is the comp effect. And I'll admit, that irritates me.
If I had to guess, (and this is based mostly on the kind of comments I've seen on my own stories) it's probably something like 'Oh I came here to masturbate, not to have you try to make me cry, 1 star for writing about suicide on the smut site.'

Yes, I expected some of that, but I'd have thought it would show up in some angry comments then too.

Surprisingly many readers here like being made to cry. Come to get off, stay for the emotional romance. But in a comp I'm fishing outside my usual LS waters so there will be more of those just looking for a quickie.

Here’s question for you - as all you stories have the 🔥 symbol & high ratings across the board.

Do you delete stories if they don’t make a certain value?
- Rewrite relaunch, I could see that happening in a series. Like when Bobby Ewing came back in Dallas 😂
- Delete and kill. No point looking back or high giving readers something below average
- Or you have been just a good writer / stories well received over the years!
I have H on all my stories except my most recent (because it hasn't hit 10 votes yet; and frankly I'm kinda surprised a couple of them are rating as highly as they are). But even if I had some truly horrible ratings, I think I'd nonetheless keep it up unless there was something morally questionable. I think it's cool for writers to leave up their older works so you can see how they evolve over time, how their styles change, their approaches, the quality, etc. Besides, there might have been somebody, somewhere who enjoyed it, and why deprive them of a work they liked, even if other people didn't like it? I know there have been a couple stories I went back to find after a while and the author had either deleted their account or left the site, which was a bummer, because they really were quite good despite the lower ratings. Just really niche stuff (shockingly, the person writing anthro erotica likes niche smut, so weird).

Hey, you know what, that's pretty freaking good! I'm just starting to creep up to 70 votes on a couple stories after a few months, so 100 votes in such a short period of time is phenomenal! You should be proud! 50 comments is also amazing! It really speaks to how moving it was for people, and that's a huge accomplishment in and of itself.

As for the downvoting, eh, happens. I got nuked for the Christmas one, and it was also kind of more of a sad, tearjerker/joyful celebration of life. I received several comments letting me know how impactful it was, which was really better than any ratings or winning the contest (which I didn't, but I might've come close after they fixed all the sweeps? I tied with 4th with everyone else who didn't win).

You're absolutely right, and maybe I just come across as whiny. 😇 I'm extremely lucky to get that kind of engagement and ratings.

Tied for 4th is a good placing, I'm shooting for that one with VDay now 😊

I didn't see it as whiny, I figured I'd give you a bit of perspective. We can all use that every now and again. I'm definitely going to be checking our your VD story!

Also, I think the 1-star bombers only go after stories that have high ratings, so it's kind of a compliment? It means they think you actually have a shot.

I think the best part about these contests is they give you exposure, which I believe was mentioned before. Personally, if even one person found my story moving, that's a win for me. You have 50 of those, at least! It's pretty cool.

If you can detach yourself from the trolls bombing your votes, the extra exposure to your stories can be worth it. As best as I can tell I’ve one been bombed 5 or 6 times on my valentines story, but I got a few favorites on one of the first stories I published here, so…
It's not the bombs themselves, but the mentality. The idea that people feel the need to harm other writers' stories just for being in the same competition.

Does explain why my novel got so many 1 stars tbh - lots of teary moments!

Also thinking in my case - maybe it’s the lack of sex in the short story?! It’s a romance story, it’s more about the changes to the situation and the people than the sex.

I mean there’s one short, intense, passionate romp but the rest is mostly stress over wedding planning…!

Yeah same, I have at time of counting 5 one stars…!

I thought about this a bit when I decided to submit this story to the V-Day comp. I knew it was very unlikely it would place in the top, in part because of exactly this. It's mostly a journey through grief with hope at the other end, and the erotic part is one scene that is more a cog in that wheel rather than written to be hot. I really can't complain with a 4.68 (and still, here I am complaining, sheeesh...), that's a bloody good rating by any measure. The engagement with the story is amazing and I stand by what I said here somewhere, that if this finishes over 4.5 on Feb 14th I'll be quite happy with the whole thing. But I wonder if I should write a shorter and hotter, sex focused story for the next comp and see what happens.

I’m at under 4.00 at the minute from 20 votes, quite frustrating!

Yep, that's what drove me out of competition writing. Particularly when it started spilling over to

Entering into anything means we showed up. Making the Long list mean we are all winnners as our effort are immortalized (as long as the author doesn’t delete!).

I feel its a bit like we have all gone to a Studio 54 party (back in the day). The iconic nightclub (our Literotica) was a place where the elite and the outcasts danced side by side under disco's dazzling lights. Thatʼs us, being cool and putting ourselves out there!

MY OFFER - is still standing for any authors that would like someone to read and vote on their entry if they are struggling to get their name on the guest (aka long) list! Just like this post so I know who needs the help ❤️

Grateful for your comment and vote. I am intending to get some reading done over the next week to also see what else everyone has produced.

23rd January

Should a romance have sex explicit
Or focus on flirting illicit?
How to calibrate
Is quite a debate
Holding hands or just on his face sit 🤷‍♀️

Well, I've submitted my story. Very short for me at just under 4000 words. Two diplomats from different countries have an arrangement to meet for a night of meaningless sex on Valentine's Day every year, and of course after several years of this they realise that you don't take St Valentine's name in vain - they are in love...

Talk about spoilers…

Well, you weren't expecting them to keep having meaningless sex in a Valentine's Day story, were you?

I finally got my Valentine's Day story down to 750 words and since it is lesbian themed I am going to go for the trifecta - the Valentine's Day contest, the 750 word challenge, and the Pink Orchid challenge. I will submit my vignette the first or second of February and hope it doesn't end up in pending purgatory or rejected because of the AI nonsense that seems to be prevalent

Good luck 🍀

I haven't looked at the schedules of contests in previous years, but I recall the time span from the first story posting day to the submittal deadline as around three weeks. For this contest, the span is four weeks. Given some of the issues the site has had in recent months, I wonder if this is intentional. Not complaining, just observing.
