[hands SJ two ramekins of lightly sugared creme caramel so that she can torch the sugar coating before we eat them in front of silver and scaly]

This is the incident from last week. The wound is hideous and she can't do stairs very well because of it, much less run around and be doglike.
She has to wear the lamp shade which makes it difficult for her to eat, see, and navigate in certain situations. Needless to say, she hates it.

(not to mention the cream that we have to use on the wound....muchos dineros)

:(

I'm so sorry HK. I hate hate that.

I seriously hate when people hit animals and don't stop.

The kids are being very empathetic, but at the same time they don't want to get too close. (icky)

They're helping feed her (she needs help with the lamp shade) and give her lots of moral support (petting).

very sad story on our local humane society's adoption page last week. a dog had been hit and the driver kept going. the dog stayed in a ditch for days (not sure how long, but maggots had infested the wound). the humane society patched him up and he's recovering well by all accounts. nasty wound though... made me very sad.

on the local news yesterday they had a dog up for adoption that was hit by a car and went under the owners' house. the owners did nothing about it until the dog was recued by their humane society. he lost a leg but is doing very well otherwise.

on a lighter note, when i first read the part about the cream in your post i could only think of whipping cream and wondered why you'd be putting whipping cream on a wound. :D duh. ointment/balm never popped into my head.

One night, many, many years ago, my husband was driving home from somewhere when he rolled a half-grown German Shepherd.

The puppy ran to his house, where the owner was standing outside waiting for him. My husband stopped and told the guy that he'd rolled the dog, and that he might want to make sure it was okay.

The guy said, "That's not my dog." Bullshit. The dog ran to him. Guess he was afraid that there was gonna be damage to my husband's car that he'd have to pay for.

And as for WPMO. . .

My undergraduate alma mater (and semi-former employer) is going to be phasing out their majors in English and history. I hope they stop calling themselves a liberal arts college.

Next time those bastards hit me up for money, I'm tempted to tell them exactly why they won't be getting any.

i think that you should draft a written response in your inimitable snarky style, eilan. but yeah, definitely tell them why they can FOAD. :>

I fear more than a few universities are doing this because if they phase out their English majors, they can then phase out the tenure-track and tenured faculty, which cost them more money Then they can hire only lecturers and adjuncts to teach composition classes, thus costing them less money because composition then is just a service class to the rest of the university.

My university is thinking of splitting the College of Arts and Sciences into the College of Arts and the College of Sciences. Then, any program that does not make the university money will be excised from the school starting with the graduate level programs in Arts.

The only English and history classes that will be offered are those that are relevant to the Education majors.

Three faculty members--two English, one history--will be retiring next May. They won't be replaced. Other longtime faculty members might be offered incentive packages.

The interim powers-that-be are running the place into the ground. I bet it doesn't even exist in 10 years. Sad, really.

I think things have been moving in that direction for some time. When I was hired in 1998, the English department was down two full-timers. They've never been replaced.

One adjunct is teaching seven comp/reading/writing classes this semester.

But then there was also talk of cutting back on adjuncts to save money. I don't see how they can do that, because all the reading/writing classes are filled to capacity as it is. And I find it tough to believe that the whopping $1200 that they pay adjuncts to teach a class is breaking them.
