For once I'm not even going to read the pages of answers before my own. I'm just going to say, how in hell can something that obviously exists, obviously is popular enough to be found everywhere in the BDSM world on-line and off, and has been around for as long as there's been a kink lifestyle, possibly be "not valid"? Who decided they were god and made that decision?
Commitment and the depth or lack thereof is about the people involved, not the way they choose to express it. I don't care if you're vanilla, kink, neopolitan, poly, or into playing furniture. Do what you and your partners want to do, and put into it as much commitment as is comfortable to you, and forget what others say is "valid."
Exploring opinions on sites like this can be fun and interesting, but allowing somebody else to decide what is valid or committed for you is something you're supposed to outgrow with your teens.
