I'm always surprised when girls from up north act all stunned when I open the door for them. Do guys up above the mason dixon line not know how to treat a lady? Or the elderly for that matter, always open the door for the elderly to enter....its just...the proper thing to do. O,O

I'm totally with you on that one. It's just the right thing to do.

I am north of said line. I open doors, give my coat when it is cold, curtail swearing in front of women ... In public at least ...

Chivalry is not practiced frequently by us Yankees. When it is, it usually is met with a welcome thank you.

However, all bets are off in NYC. That place is nuts.

I wouldn't know, never having been that far north. I've been to Saint Louis once but that as far north I've ever been. So I can't judge how crazy the big apple is, but you're not the first person I've heard say that.

Apologies, Veroe, for invading your thread. But I just wanted to say on behalf of my gender, thank you to you gentlemen for your chivalry and consideration. It IS still considered to be good manners, no matter where you come from. Yes, I know that some like to claim that it makes it seem like you're treating women as if they are weak and helpless, but I don't buy that. You all have seen my targets, you know I'm the farthest thing from helpless there is. But I still appreciate a considerate gesture, very much. :rose:

That raises an interesting question. Is opening doors for a woman, even ones you don't know, being nice and considerate of others, or is it a relic of our mysogynistic past?

Chivalry is always a good thing and appreciated though seldom seen.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. I've always been raised to think of it as good manners and being polite. For that reason I appreciate the gesture, always. But I suppose for some very radical feminists who may choose to see the bad in little things like that, they may interpret it as a relic of a past age where women were thought of as fragile possessions to be cared for. To me, that's thinking about it too much and letting yourself be bothered by something that isn't worth being bothered about.

Very well stated.

I believe it comes down to the original intent behind the action. Are we opening that door because we think someone is not strong enough? Do we offer the umbrella because their hair might frizz? Is the chair pulled then pushed in to afford myself a view down her blouse?

The original intent is to show courtesy and offer to do something nice in a world where random acts of kindness are an endangered species. If someone wants to express hate or disdain when the motivation was noble, while it is a judgement they make based on their social views, returning hate for chivalry is unwarranted.
