GOP’s Winsome Sears Looks to Make History by Filing For Virginia Governor in 2025​

Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears has filed the paperwork to run for governor in 2025.

According to The Hill, her paperwork was accepted Wednesday by Virginia’s Department of Elections and she is expected to make a “special announcement” in Virginia Beach on Thursday.

Sears has become the first Republican candidate in the off-year gubernatorial race, which will likely garner significant attention an off-year for U.S. elections.

However, she is likely to face a primary challenge from Attorney General Jason Miyares, who is also expected to throw his hat in the ring.

My entire stance on the gun culture is that gun enthusiasts should be decent and unthreatening and use any influence they have to encourage responsibility, safety, and self-control rather than belligerence, defiance, and militarism.

The latter brings scorn, fear, and resentment. Doing things like holding NRA pride rallies in response to mass shootings, openly carrying assault weapons at political events is abhorrent and scares the public into wanting anti-gun legislation.

If the NRA and gun nuts want to increase public support they could do things like creating victims funds, helping families whose breadwinners were killed, being more openly supportive of hunting and wildlife habitat conservation organizations like Ducks Unlimited, or endangered species protection. They could host meetings and talks about mental health awareness, outreach, and signs of distress among troubled youth.

Civil War re-enactment groups and similar organizations are perfect examples of positive outlets and outreach. The history and engineering aspects of firearms is fascinating. Fetishizing the ability to kill is terrorizing.

“From my cold dead hands” is an alienating threatening message. The gun lobby can do better and if they don’t want the voting public to see them as the threat within that needs mitigation they should do better.
