USS Oriskany (CV-34) rests upright on the seabed in the Gulf of Mexico about 22 miles southeast of Pensacola, Florida, at a depth of about 212 feet, where she was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. Her massive 911 foot hull remains structurally intact, with the flight deck at about 145 feet and her island rising to around 80 feet below the surface, making it accessible to experienced divers. Over time, her steel surfaces have become covered with corals, algae, and marine growth, transforming the former warship into a thriving underwater ecosystem filled with fish, sharks, and other marine life. Hurricanes and currents have caused only minor settling, and her overall structure remains clearly recognizable, earning her the nickname “Great Carrier Reef” as the largest artificial reef ever created from a single ship.

USS Oriskany was commissioned in 1950 and served extensively during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, launching thousands of combat missions and becoming one of the most heavily used carriers of her era. After her retirement in 1976, the U.S. Navy selected her for artificial reef creation under a special program designed to support marine life and diving tourism. Before sinking, hazardous materials were carefully removed, and controlled explosive charges were placed inside the hull. On May 17, 2006, the charges were detonated, and she sank stern first in just 37 minutes, settling upright on the seabed exactly as planned. Today, she stands as both a preserved naval monument and one of the most successful examples of turning a historic warship into a permanent underwater habitat.
