Also, like Eilan, I have a degree in English and I do tend to type/write more articulately than I speak.

I've found that my speech varies depending on my audience. Back in my working mom days, I always made an effort to speak clearly and correctly. When I'm around family and friends, I'm much more relaxed and not always grammatically correct. (I tend to be more grammatically correct around my friends, though, because most of them work in academia in some capacity. I'm still more relaxed about it than I used to be when I was working, though.)

Oddly enough, I have trouble understanding some of the people in my area, even though I've spent all but a couple of years of my life here. The combination of slurred speech and rural twang is difficult for me to decipher.

I have an Australian accent, although with slightly more British sounding vowels, and without some of the broad vowel sounds typical of country people here, as in, a little bit more city. The rounder vowel sounds come from having parents who used to insist on me pronouncing everything clearly as a kid. I have a slightly American accent (perceptible by Australians but not by Americans) on some words and phrases, and when I talk to an American, my accent gets more American for some days! I went to college in America, and visit annually, so that's where that comes from.

this is VERY interesting. first of all, i absolutely go crazy for various aussie, NZ, UK accents. secondly, i find that i kind of adopt the speech style/patterns of people i'm talking to. i think it's a skill i developed when i was in sales... makes people feel comfortable if you speak like they do.

I'm on the same page as EJ - UK & Aussie accents are one of my weaknesses. I also pick up the dialect of people I'm talking to, at least a little bit. I have family in the UK, and whenever I come home from a visit it takes a week or two for my "accent" to go away.

Us kiwi's sound similar to the aussies, but they have more of a nasal drawl, and they are lazier with the vowels. A classic example is that we say 'six' and they say 'seex'
Plus you gotta know, it is the most unforgiveable insult to lump the two of us together. How would you feel if we said that canada and the US are the same! LOL. We're only friends if it's against the rest of the world....otherwise it's highly competitive sports rivalry and screeds of bad taste jokes about who fucks the most sheep.

I used to work the switchboard at my work and someone calling in actually told me I had a nice voice. I'm not sure if he was sincere or trying to feed me a line of crap.

I have a southern accent and can butcher the english language at time...but I have been told more than once that I have a sexy voice. When I hear my voice on a recording, I don't recognize it.

As for tone, I always think my voice sounds a bit high and nasal when I hear myself on a tape. On the other hand, I've been told by others that they find my voice mellow and reminiscent of Bing Crosby (ok, that dates me but he's even old for me). So there's clearly some kind of mind voice split thing going on!

As for accent, to me, of course I am 'Alberta Average' (even though I am a BCer) which has been determined by linguistic experts to be the least accented english in the world. However, many people think I have a faint British accent. And of course, my American friends love to get me to say 'garage', 'roof', 'about' and those other words where my Canajun accent comes through.

And Sweeterica - the US pacific northwest has a very strong accent in my experience - or am I only meeting transplants from the south?
