What does targeted, sweep-evading, story vandalism look like?

Same thing happened to me from an American defaultist. I even gave them the shot to defuse the whole situation privately, but they quintupled down in public instead.

It also happened when someone too much of a bitch to show their actual name posted on the thread I just took a quote from, and that was before the mods edited out the post.

Speaking only for myself, several members came to my defense when a former member made vailed racist comments about me. Engergetic Monkey, Pet black-faced rat (which immediately became pet rat), and other offensive terms. I do remember being scolded by the moderator for taking the bait and responding in kind in my defense.

And I'd disagree with the moderator for scolding you about any of it.

That said, it's a good example of what actual hate looks like, as opposed to the spoiled privileged posters who think any form of disagreement is hate.
You know, the folks who will cry about "othering" people while trying to delegitimize anyone who doesn't agree with them.

I like I said before, to @ElectricBlue, I know when to stop. So, I have, for the most part, here. As in my humble opinion (WTF, humble?), the discussion no longer serves a valid purpose.

If OP was posting anti-semitic conspiracy theories would you recommend the best course of action be to ignore it, or speak put against it?
Is this a serious question? I think all the way back in 1995 we had already figured out that, if were were going to have an internet, we all needed to learn this singular basic tenet: don't feed the trolls.

This is the playbook. Be offensive, then claim innocence, then take offense when called on it. Rinse and repeat.

It’s happening across every social media platform worldwide. AH is nothing special in that respect.

Frankly, there was never a valid purpose here.
But this is the comment I find most troublesome, because I see it dozens of times in this forum. Why do people feel entitled to tell others which posts and which threads are valid or not.

Instead, just decide, for yourself, which threads you will participate in or not. That's all. There is no need for more.

If people could just do that, much of the animosity here would go away.

Wow. Did I just solve half the world's problems? When will my brilliant idea be implemented. Let's call it: Mind your own business (TM).

Those of us who've been here awhile find lots of discussions repetitious; one-bombs might be the most repetitious kind of thread. It used to bother me, but not really anymore; I, too, have occasionally taken posters to task for complaining about the same things I've read a million times before. So I get it.

I see this thread as different than the usual complaint or fruitless suggestion for a different kind of system. I think the OP is providing data she's seen, and I'll never really object to that.

But definitely, I think a lot of us struggle with continuous entry into threads we should perhaps avoid. I'm guilty too, but I know it and I try hard not to do it. Much. Anymore.

I also perceive that bombing has, indeed, changed for the worse in relatively recent years. I just don't pretend to know why.

It’s not a feeling. It’s hard data. And it’s not just me. Though - unsurprisingly given the behavior on this thread - few want to talk about it in public. I don’t think anyone’s interests are served by taking an ostrich-like approach to the problem. But YMMV.
Correlation instead of causality is often cited as irrefutable fact.

Are people not allowed to post an opinion.
You are now telling me my post is invalid, are you not?

People are free to post whatever they want here. Other people are free to agree, disagree or ignore.
Those are all equally valid responses.

As far as "minding your own business" when someone posts something on a public forum, they are making it the business of everyone on the forum.
If you don't want people commenting on your thoughts, don't post them in a public forum.

I can mathematically define both. That’s like telling a theoretical physicsist, “Hey, E is like M C squared,” without knowing what it really means. Sorry, I’m allergic to mansplaining.

Oh, I had a smartassed comment to put up on this one, but thinking better of it. I can be a real stinker, it would've been in fun, but not going there... :nana: Wow, I can contain myself, sometimes!

To some extent, I am. If we want this forum to be helpful, then we need to restrain ourselves from derailing threads with unrelated opinions. Now, if we don't care about this forum being helpful, then sure, you are within your rights to do as you please.

Me too! I should not be in this thread at all, though I will say that I only got in here because I thought OP had found a way to get API access to the scoring system.

Maybe we can start a 12 step program?

Inquiring minds want to know, is this a tempest in a teapot?

And yet again Ms Miller has managed to start a thread that went over 10 pages in only 2 days.

But your position seems to be that if we want the thread to be "helpful" we should refrain from presenting opposing viewpoints or correcting misinformation.
That strikes me as the exact opposite of helpful.

If you want to be helpful, you should stay on topic and aim to be helpful with regard to what the OP was hoping for when they created the thread.

Example: OP asks which browser, safari or Firefox, works best for this site on his 7 year old MacBook, since its been pretty buggy lately.

Unhelpful:

1. Apple sucks. Use ubuntu.
2. Die, you apple fanboy!!
3. Lol ur poor ur laptop is 7 years old
4. I use a phone, so no idea, but I dont like your nic
5. please provide detailed evidence that the site is buggy, you hater
6. nobody cares if the site is buggy, asshole, we have so many users
7. please define lately. I've been here since the 90s and I believe the site is better now than before
