An anti-bug in the program I'm writing. Obfuscated to protect the guilty:

I'm writing a great big program that needs to do many things, including $FNORD.

Documentation says that the software I'm working with does not handle $FNORD. I test this on a very simple case where the only instruction is "do $FNORD" and I confirm that this doesn't work. I get an error message saying "this software can't do $FNORD".

So, I come up with a work-around that does $ALMOST_FNORD instead. It's a bit ugly and slow, but it's an adequate replacement for $FNORD. Fine and good.

Then one of my co-workers looks at the code and points out that instead of implementing the work-around, I actually did $FNORD instead. And it worked. Without any error messages. I checked the results and they're exactly what $FNORD should produce.

Went back and tried my test case again, and $FNORD still doesn't work there. Only when it's part of a bigger program that's doing lots of other things as well.

Co-worker and I stared at the code for an hour, couldn't figure out why it was working for this particular case. I've had a lot of "why isn't this program working?" moments, but this is my first case of "how can this program possibly be working?"
