Life insurance gambles that you'll live longer than the cut off date (currently 80) for your policy and they get to keep your money without having to pay out. Auto insurance is the same, good drivers never get a payout no matter how much they pay in and the insurer keeps that cash.

Social Security runs on the same theme - that you're going to die before you retire, or die not long after retirement. Those who manage to cheat the mortality table odds get the payout.
