I had a grumpy clearing out refrigerator session and put ours out for the birds in spring..

I have to do another clear out in the fridge soon. We have DOZENS of jars in there and very little room for other stuff. I get cross about it sometimes because we seem to have every condiment going ( apart from my favourites because there is no room in the fridge) and I cannot see why we need, say....eight types of hot sauce.. Surely one at a time might be ok, or.....at. Push two?

With the time of year when fridge space is high demand it gets quite stressful. The problem is, I do a sort out, and then G and house guest go 'oh, room in the fridge I can open this jar I have been thinking about now....and within days its stuffed full again '. And they never look to the back for jars already open. Houseguest likes blackcurrant jam, so there are always at least two jars of blackcurrant jam in the fridge. Never one at a time.

This kind of thing, and taking jam with the crumby or buttery knife really upsets and infuriates me.:mad::(. I used to always eat the bit of butter with everyone else's crumbs in when they hadn't used a butter knife. But G now makes me cut that bit off and give it to a dog or cat and have a nice bit. :). But I don't see why not just use the butter knife?

*snort*
I'm trying soooo hard not to laugh but i'm losing the battle.

I'll give you the crumby butter poet, see how you like it. To always keep it nice for others  Or having no room in fridge for things you might like. Or being expected to balance food on top of jars instead of place normally on shelves. We have a big fridge too, considering there is only me here full time, we have full size family fridge .....full of jars.

Its ok. I know it was a silly rant. ;).

I don't even know why I found that funny, Elle. I think cuz it's so hard for me to think of you getting infuriated over anything, let alone crumbly butter.
Then I got a mental image of you staring at it, arms akimbo, and I just lost it.
Sorry

Sour dough rolls from scratch for hubby, pasta sauce from scratch with four pounds of tomatoes (2kg ish) and train shaped cake for the kids.

I was feeling fatigued and had a tickle in my throat yesterday so I prepared some sukju namul muchim. Basically, bean sprouts with sesame oil, salt and raw minced garlic. I wanted the raw garlic for my throat. By night fall things were looking worse and I expected to wake up in terrible pain. Today, surprisingly, it's kind of just the same and not worse. So now I'm thinking of all the ways I can eat raw garlic... I'm stinky but not worse off. I just hope it gets better because my throat looks scary.
(;_;)
I think the kitsune udon was a great help also.

Yankee chili - which is to say, not Texas chili. Mine consists mostly of beans and vegetables and only a small amount of beef - and ground beef, at that. I use a few hot peppers for heat. However, after being told that it would be a crime against humanity to include my usual half cup or so of slivered almonds, I left them out this time. I hope there won't be too much wailing and gnashing of teeth at dinner when the army discovers the lack of almonds.

You know what I like in my chili that a lot of people find weird? Mushrooms! The rest is just the usual--beef, tomatoes, beans, spices--and sour cream on top. :)

And that is why I don't find almonds to be that weird. :p

You'd like mine then: it has a half pound of mushrooms. :)

I'm making chilli as well! Chicken chilli, tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices. No beans, and certainly no almonds or mushrooms :p I'm also making cornbread. It's a must with chilli, for me! I put yoghurt on top of mine. I like that better than sour cream. It's sourer :)

Another couple who are friends of ours are learning German together with their kids. They are embracing the culture as much as the language. Today they were wondering about Christmas cookies. Now I'll have to drop down the rabbit hole, go through my Mom's recipe collection, and see what I can find. My Gram (Dad's mom) gave her all the family recipes several years ago, which go back a few more generations. Some of them are very hard to read, in part because of handwriting and in part because they are in Penn Dutch. It will be a challenge, but oh my the goodies!
My Gram made fabulous lebkuchen and springerle.

I prefer sour cream but use yoghurt. Its a passable substitute, as I love yoghurt, and its a little lighter. G will not eat with ground/minced meat, ( he will eat ground meat happily in other foods, but he hated chilli when until he learned that it didn't have to be ground meat, now he loves it. Same meat :))

Spices! Onlything I wish is that I could grind my own peppers for the flavour too.

I use beans because I like them. Surely that's enough reason? I like the texture and the ' peace' they give the mouth in a less pure way than the yoghurt or sour cream.. Cornbread isn't a must but a worthwhile treat. I once made a cornbread 'top' and no one forgave me, so I never did that again.

If you have or can borrow a dehydrator and a spice grinder its super easy to dry and grind peppers. Sweet bell pepper powder makes a nice addition to foods that don't need their color but benefit from flavor.

Today was cheesey potatoes and reheated sloopy joes that I made from scratch (well everthing but the ketchup) served on me-made sourdough rolls.

I  jalapeno cheese cornbread with my chili, but I lost my favorite recipe, and the ones I've tried since then have just not been quite as good. Boo.

Bread is in the oven, moose/elk shoulder is bubbling away, lingonberry caramel parfait is in the freezer. Later I'll roast carrots, parsnips and beets and slice some gravlax to be served with the bread along with salmon roe and all the trimmings that go with it.

Good times.

Is it a special occasion, seela? The shoulder is bubbling away, how are you cooking it? I would probably slow roast a shoulder.

Here's my chicken chili, and "Christmas" cornbread (red and green peppers), and I threw some bacon and cheddar in there as well :D Nom nom!
