I didn't have any polenta or cornmeal, so I fried grits for brunch. If frying cornmeal, I usually do it plain, but I coated the grits cake with egg and flour and then served it with syrup. Scrambled eggs and bacon. And yes, I do like my scrambled eggs cooked to the consistency of shoe leather

Its good, it teaches more than cooking, but contribution, and respect for the work you do, and pride in achievement I think, and perhaps enthusiasm for the skill too.

Yes, I think so too.
I'm a great believer in self-reliance and being self-sufficient as far as you can.
Doesn't mean that you have to do everything on your own or do it very well, but as you say, it helps you value and respect the work besides being very helpful in a pinch when you have to get by on your own.
