Your Top 5 List is...

This is what it must feel like to choose your favorite child 😭

In the Dark of the Night
Such a good villain song.

All You Wanna Do
The most depressing story of the bunch set to the best beat.

America
I know the point of this post is the songs, but I have to mention the visuals are perfect. Anita's purple dress is so dreamy 😻 And the choreography, oh my god, what a number!

Livin' It Up on Top
It's a hard to pick between this and several other songs from Hadestown but I'm running out of slots. It has to be just one so I'm picking one about Persephone's temporary freedom.

Let's Be Bad
This song captures Marilyn's public persona so well and it's just super fun. All these years later and I'm still annoyed Smash didn't get another season.

Ohhhh I forgot about cartoons!
Some ludicrously good material there 🤔

Spoiled for choice. I have to at least mention the other preeminent cartoon villain song: Poor Unfortunate Souls.
Good choice!

I bet you’ve not even heard of the Xmas cartoon Olive The Other Reindeer. If not, you are missing an absolute treat!

But here’s the evil postman singing his evil song.

But which song do I kick out?!
Plus I now realise Singing in the Rain should be in there too 🤔

Only 5... ?
Fuck me... Can we get a top 50? Even then... this is so not fair.

Okay.
5. "Michael in the Bathroom" - Be More Chill

4. "Maybe This Time" - Cabaret

3. "She Used to Be Mine" - Waitress

2. "A Little Priest" - Sweeney Todd

1. "Come What May" - Moulin Rouge
(this was also our wedding song)

* Bonus - "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain" - Daniel Radcliffe in S.3 Ep. 4 of "Miracle Workers"

I've heard of it but not watched it, I thought it was a book. A villain with a good song and a relatable backstory, I'll watch it in about six months 😊

I've never watched this show but it's kind of like the Tom Holland lip sync clip, if I come across it then it must be watched every single time.

Here is my list:

Nothing Compares To You - Sinead O'Connor

My Immortal - Evanescence

Missing the War - Ben Folds Five

Sports Night doesn't get near the attention it deserves.

In no order

This song is sad, Tammi Terrell’s story is even more sad

A brilliant song about war crushing lives of hopeful youth

Johnny Cash covered this but it’s like it was written for him since he loved this

If Linda Ronstadt singing about unrequited love doesn’t make you cry, you have no heart

From a Lou Reed album written as two friends were going through sickness and death, this song, more than any other shows the pain of loss. I’ve gone back to the entire album more than once when sad

Your Top 5 Songs Guaranteed to Make You Cry
If I’m the mood for a good cry, these will get me

First three songs all are ones I’ve ugly-cried to. I’ve talked about it on my music thread but I lost a best friend to addiction/overdose. All three of these make me think of her. The first one I avoid at all costs.
1. The A-Team by Ed Sheeran
2. Dancin’ Away With My Heart by Lady A
3. Call Your Mom by Noah Kahan

This one was used in the movie Fly Away Home which I watched a ton when I was a kid. I used to check it out from the school library on the weekends because we didn’t own it. It’s played at the beginning of the movie where her mom dies in a car accident. When I hear this song my eyes immediately start to well, regardless of the mood I’m in. I guess the scene of that movie is somewhat stamped into my brain.
4. 10,000 Miles by Mary Chaplin Carpenter

I used to sing this one when I was a kid. Then I sang it to my kids as a lullaby. Lots of rocking chair moments at 3am with this song. All the feels.
5. The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell

Your Top 5 Songs Guaranteed to Make You Cry

Zevon started work on his last album when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the lining of his lungs. It was released two weeks before he passed. This was the last thing he recorded. It is simple, it is gorgeous, and I am tearing up writing this.

The first time I heard this, I missed the twist in the second verse. When I caught it, it broke me. It is subtle, she doesn't oversell it, and that is why it works so well.

I am sticking to one song from a musical. Eponine's final song in Les Misérables will make me cry ugly every fucking time, but unless you know the play and her story, it is just a pretty song with a weird ending. But if you know, you know.

Country music is almost a cheat, but the combination of the sweet story and the beautiful harmonies puts me over.

This one was introduced to me earlier this year. There is a lot to it, and it resonates with me. A lot.
