Your Top 5 List is...

🎭Top 5 Comedians🎭

1. CARROT TOP

2. GALLAGHER
3. RIP TAYLOR
4. ANDY KAUFMAN

5. STEVE MARTIN
I don't think I've ever seen someone rank Carrot Top as their favorite comedian!

He was very funny on comedy central's "i can't believe this is happening", but I think that's the only time I've seen him just telling a hilarious story without his props. He's a lot funnier than I thought!

Also very surprising you didn't color his name orange 🤔

Thanks be to all that is good and pure in this world for the random YouTube folks who upload them 🙌🏼

I haven't watched her season yet 😭 I can't watch stuff out of chronological order or I'd skip ahead.

My top Five Favorite Stand-Up Comedians (in no order).

Steve Martin. He was young, new, with a brilliant stage presence and a surreal, irreverent sense of humor. Here is his first time on Carson. Keep watching his interaction with Johnny. Also, read, or even better, listen to his autobiography on this period, Born Standing Up.

Richard Pryor. The king of the stage, and there is nothing more to say about that. Here is a bit from later in his career, his first concert on the Sunset Strip.

Franklyn Ajaye. He was an actor and comedian. Not as well known as most on these lists, but an incredibly respected stand-up comedian in the industry. He is a comedian's comedian, with a delivery that is part storyteller and part jazz. One of my favorite bits is very topical right now.

Before Harry Anderson was on Night Court, before he was on Cheers, he was a street magician and stand up. Part carny, part magic, part Damion Runyon, it was a unique show. Here is a bit on geeks, real geeks, from his special Hello Sucker. Not the most prolific, or beloved, but his style hit a sweet spot for me. Warning: geek is geek.

Lenny Bruce. This was dangerous comedy, dealing with sex, and Judaism, and politics, and race, and everything else. Nothing was off limits. And he was arrested for it. Multiple times. And brought to trial. Over fucking comedy. They would send undercover cops to his show. For comedy. One of the times he was arrested, it was over this lovely bit of word play. I will repeat, they arrested him for that. It is still hard for me to wrap my head around it.

I am adding one more that I won't link because I cannot listen to him anymore. Not "won't," cannot without a physical reaction. When the reality of his crimes came out, I had an actual existential crisis. My dad left when I was six, and this man, with his acting, his writing, and his stunningly brilliant stand up routines, was a surrogate father. Bill Cosby is a monster, an unrepentant monster and rapist. And Bill Cosby was one of the greatest storytellers and comedians of any generation. You can be both. And if I didn't love him so much for what I thought he was, I wouldn't hate him as much as I do now. And fuck, do I hate him.

Top 5 Comedians

1. Mark Maron
2. Hannibal Burress
3. John Mulaney
4. Maria Bamford
5. Mitch Hedberg
I thought a lot about putting Marc Maron on this list. His last special where he talked about the death of his girlfriend was sad and hilarious at the same time. That’s a gift.

1) Mitch Hedberg

2) Eddie Murphy

3) Richard Pryor

4) George Carlin

5) Steven Wright

Unlike @lavendersilk this is probably the list I’d have guessed for you right off the bat.
Which ain’t an insult. It’s a great list. I almost included Eddie and Richard. But a lot of their humor ain’t aged well, despite being super influential in my own life.

Top 5 comedians:

1. Taylor Tomlinson
2. Daniel Sloss
3. Mike Birbiglia
4. Iliza Shlesinger
5. Demitri Martin
Birbiglia was the guy who I slapped myself for not including right after I posted my list. His long form story telling is fucking brilliant.

Taylor is my favorite “young” comedian.
