Well in my experience a crop mostly an audible instrument. You whistle it over their ears just to remind them you have it, but you don't actually strike with it at all unless you're met with absolute stubbornness, and even then there are any number of better suited implements, including the reigns themselves, but sometimes you just gotta use what you have at hand. Either way, you are not far off. My experience with the riding crop is that for what it is built to do, being overzealous with it on any subject can get you kicked or bucked off. If you are going for enough of a corrective sting to be remembered, my 3 foot single tail works on both horse and human. And even less pressure/force is required. Easier on the wrists.
