1. WD-40 (for rust)
2. Bach Trombone Slide Cream (for...er...trombones)
3. Tequila (for social engagements)
4. KY (for anyone who's inexplicably stuck in Kentucky)
5. Mayonnaise (because sandwiches need lubrication as much as the rest of us).

This may sound crazy, but I have used a cutting board cream that is FABULOSO as an all purpose lube.

What would lure me towards it from a distance would be the sound of New Wave music. But what would entice me to get in the middle of the trap so that I could be caught would be a combination of tacos and a DVD box set of Daria... wait should I only be saying Halloween stuff? I’d say I’m more of a Bob’s Burgers fan or even Gravity Falls. Those shows are so clever. I didn’t appreciate them until long after they had been on for a while.

First impressions are important. I do think people can change, but they have to be willing to.

Well yes, you have to be open to a genuine friendship with them and think that they are trustworthy. You can’t come into it guarded - or more guarded than with others. There’s a baseline amount of caution I use with everyone online just because I don’t know if people really are who they say they are. (Ex: I exchanged a number of messages with “Brianna”. I never know who people are referring to when people post about an obvious alt that was exposed). And I feel naive or dumb about that but I just don’t think to doubt someone who doesn’t seem to have an ulterior motive. But that’s a whole other discussion. How do people know?? My radar is very broken.

I only get sad if I listen to my inner demons. Most of the time I just get bored. And I'm always happy to see posts from people I like.

I notice both funny things and negative things. I notice some snarky posts or pile-ons. And I know Lit is like a void or echo chamber where people can vent and then leave it and (maybe) feel better once it’s off their chest, but it’s also not. Those words are there for a long time. And yes I know people go back and delete posts. But someone has seen them. Something that’s typed impulsively can burn away at someone for a long time.

On the flip side, when Lit is going well, it is one of the best feelings to connect with people all over the world- sometimes over humor or something personal and special. It can make your deserted island feel suddenly more inhabited, like you aren’t all alone in the way you view something.

Sometimes Lit is a life preserver and other times it’s the anchor that drags you to the bottom of the sea.

I love having conversations like that. Where people actually listen to one another.

I do too. And when we can get to a point where we aren’t so defensive and we can learn from one another and not take things so personally. But to get there, at least for me, I need to know that I’m around safe people.

It’s weird, because this might be true, I don’t know. But for me, it’s absolutely not at all different from any other social group. The way I have met people at school, at new jobs, at bars whatever is exactly how I met them here . I laid low. I observed. I saw what people talked about what and how and then when I felt I had something funny or insightful to add, I did. And then o did it again, and again. And the people who picked up what I was laying down responded and those who didn’t, didn’t and we all just went from there. I can’t fathom any other way of doing it.

I've not found Lit works in quite the same way, because everything here feels very fragmented. You have lots of different forums, all for very different things. There are hundreds of separate threads in each, each with a different creator and theme and tone. And that's why I think joining in a group is difficult, because there aren't really groups here to join.

I don’t know that right or wrong is the most helpful way to frame it. Everyone comes here for different things. I don’t really come here for community really. Sometimes I wish I was more of a joiner but I’m not . I make friends . Sometimes those friends like each other and congregate as a group. Often not. It doesn’t really phase me much either way. So I’m probably not the best person to comment on this. I can’t even commit to local Board game groups

Oh, it's not your radar, and it's certainly not you. Your intuition about people and situations is seriously good. It's just Lit. We can only see what people show us, and it's the nature of Lit that we don't often have much to go on.

I’m enjoying this thread and the random conversations that sprout up and the different people that stop in.

This is the type of thread hosting that I can handle— basically just babble some stream of consciousness about something that’s been on my mind, or an article I’ve read, and then get out of the way and let people talk.

You know, I think you might be on to something. This might be a good opportunity to get some second opinions on some less “stereotypical Lit material”. Maybe you’re looking for someone to look over some cover letters or a resume’? Or grocery lists?

My daughter was working on coding homework last night and good lord I could have really had someone else do that! Python! Who needs it?

There are regional groups in the Personals and many of the Playground word and number games are inhabited by the same cross-thread posters. I think Authors' Hangout has a supportive vibe from what I've seen.

General Board is more mixed and I'd advise you to stay at least 1,000 light years away from the bipartisan US bear pit which hides behind the door marked Politics.

As often happens, I spotted this thread when it appeared at the top of the list when someone posted. I answered the current question and then went back to see how @Love_Is_Blonde had started and what tone she hoped would evolve.

Then, reading the first page, I noticed that she'd asked a question in the very first post that had only been partially answered.
