It's been over 10 years since I returned home. I gradutated from this high school but back then, I was a total loser. Seriously. I was overweight, hadstringy hair, thick glasses. Yeah, a real loser with no friends other than those that needed tutoring. I was a perfect student. Always had the good grades. But were grades when I didn't have any real friends.

But today. Today everyone would be in shock. Of course I was still 5'5" but now I was about 30 lbs thinner and at my ideal weight. My hair was radiant and my make up was professionally done. I was successful in my own right but it didn't hurt that I was engaged to a senator (who unfortunately couldn't be here tonight.)

I was wearing a green dress with hugged my curves. The diamonds on my ears and ring were real. I saw people looking at me. Wondering who I was. My jet black hair fell loosely down my back in soft waves.

It has been ten years. I looked around the room and saw a few faces I recognized, but a lot more I didnt. In high school I was in my own little world, going from football in the fall to basketball in the winter and then baseball in the spring.

Also I was a serious student, taking all the math and science classes they offerred.

While it worked out for my own education, I later realized I had missed things I should have taken, including shop classes and especially auto mechanics. After all, we all have cars to take care of and we cant go back to high school again and get free classes, and in retrospect I could have handled another class each semester with no real problem, especially those that didnt require a lot of study or homework.

But the people that took stuff like that to avoid academic subjects were in a different world too, and looking back, I guess never the train shall meet...

Now the social hour was ending and it was time to find a seat for dinner. I was alone, being divorced after a brief marriage, and most of the people were couples.

So with big round tables for eight, there were few empty seats for a stray, but I found one and asked if I could join a group none of whom I recognized. The fellow next to me wasnt a grad, he was the date of a girl I didnt know. On the other side was a couple, married but the guy had transferred in during our senior year and I didnt know him. He didnt know anyone at the table either, so we all introduced ourselves and told a brief little history.

Across the table was a pretty girl I didnt remember, if I even had ever met her, but in her little speech I was quite impressed. After high school she went to te local university as i did, but she was in pre-law and later in law school while I was in engineering and with 30000 or so students we couldnt have possibly crossed paths.

But the more she said the more I was impressed with her accomplishments, and I came right out and told her I wished I had known her then and dated her and she smiled.

My own history was brief. Going to university on an athletic scholarship I blew out my knee early freshman year and never played a game. Then after a year I transferred and went to another school and eventually in the navy for 9 years, and was now just back in town working as a salesman.

But as dinner ended and the music started, I asked her for a dance and she accepted
