Not necessarily based on a crime per say, but the movie is inspired by the very real events of Sarah Winchester who believed her family was cursed by the dead spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle. After both her infant child and husband died, she moved to San Jose and began renovations on a then 8 room farm house that never stopped until she died. She believed the renovations confused the spirits of the dead, which is why there are stairways leading into ceilings, doors that open to 20 foot drops outside, rooms with no doors, and other oddities.

Deep Water
Not really a crime, not really a scary movie... but the story is.
1968 - man was preparing to go to the moon, yet no one had sailed single-handed, unassisted, non-stop around the world. A competition was launched. the Golden Globe, backed by the Sunday Times. There were two prizes, for the first person to do it and for the fastest. One man completed the journey and two were left out there... then there was one after a sinking. That man was Donald Crowhurst.

The story has been made into a few films, The Mercy being a recent one, but this shows the actual man. You hear and see him.

So, why is it scary? The book... written by Sunday Times journalists as they uncovered the story... and his musings, rambling, rantings as insanity took hold... alone and in the middle of the ocean the realisation hits. All is lost

it is the mercy.
