A Night Out (Closed)

"Anything... I guess..." She said "I don't really watch a lot of movies." She said before drinking more of her coffee "so how many girls have you been in a relationship with? How long since the last one?"

"So you don't drink? Don't really watch movies? What do you do Miss Sarah?" David said with a look of interest on his face. "As for my relationships... I've only had about 3 girlfriends. I ended it about 12 months ago. I found out that she was cheating on me with one of her colleagues. We had been together for about 4 years, and I didn't think I could go through the hurt and pain again. So how about you? I'm sure you must have had a boyfriend or 2..."

"Just the one." She said "we where high school sweethearts... I've never dated anyone else. I didn't think I ever would have to." She said sighing "I'm sorry about your girlfriend. I don't understand how people can hurt the person they claim to love so badly..."

"Me either. It just doesn't make sense. I mean, if you love someone, they are your everything, why would you risk it all?" David said, "So your sweetheart was the one who left you... I mean... umm... Were they the one that..." David knew what he wanted to ask but every time he tried, it felt like it was coming out wrong.

"Was he the one that what?" She asked "left me alone in a wedding dress with a room of very confused family and friends? Who made me doubt love even exists at all?" She asked "yeah, it's all the same guy."

"I'm sorry Sarah... I didn't mean to upset you." David said as he drained his coffee. "If you like we can skip the movie, and do something else." David signalled the waiter, and got the cheque, David fished out his wallet and slipped a $20 note in to the folder, and handed it back to the waiter.

"What was it you where trying to ask? Let's just get the questions out of the way. What do you want to know?" She asked as she continued to drink her coffee "just ask away..."

"I was going to ask if your sweetheart was that man. You've answered that. But since you've told me to ask away, do you think you could find love again? Do you think there is a guy that could make you happy, and believe that love does exist?" David ventured.

"I don't know. I'm not sure that I'm even supposed to be happy anymore... I had a chance and I messed it all up... Maybe I've screwed up too bad and don't deserve to be happy and in love." She said before finishing her coffee, wanting to leave.

"How did you mess it all up?" David asked as he grabbed Sarah's hands to hold the reassuringly. "You were there. You were ready to commit to one man for the rest of your life. He was the one who dropped the ball. He had his chance and didn't take it. You do deserve to be happy. You deserve to love and be loved." David's heart was racing as he said this to this girl who had cast some weird spell on him.

"I wanted to wait until we got married." She said "so he found someone else to fulfill his needs and then married her. If I had just slept with him none of that would have happened. I wouldn't have been humiliated and hurt. I'd be happily married to someone who i really loved." She sighed looking away from him "so it's my fault. I messed up."

"I don't see how wanting to wait is a bad thing. It is a rare thing for a girl to wait these days. Just have look around and see how many children are having children. I actually find it, well, an attractive quality. To be honest, sex isn't a foundation for a relationship. I believe that truth, honesty, and communication are the foundation of a good, healthy relationship." David said, still holding Sarah's hands.

"Well it ruined mine..." She said "but there isn't anything I can do now." She pulled her hands away "I really don't feel like talking about it anymore. I've spent enough time going over every little detail."

"I'm sorry, I was just trying to get to know you." David said as he retracted his hands. "So what do you want to do when we leave here, since movies aren't really your thing?

"I wasn't trying to be mean... I'm sorry." She said "we can go to the movie. Just because I don't watch a lot doesn't mean I don't like going."

David stood up, and offered his hand to help her out of the booth. "Well, shall we then?" Just before Sarah moved, a lady approached them. She walked up to David and said, "Would you care to buy the pretty lady a rose."

Before Sarah had a chance to intervene, David said "Certainly, I'll take one." David fished out his wallet and paid for it, and chose two-tone rose, with red and white petals.

David handed the rose to Sarah, and said, "The lady said the rose was for a pretty lady."

Sarah just stared at the flower. "Maybe I should get going. It's late and I have to work tomorrow." She said "maybe we could catch that movie some other time."

David felt a pang of disappointment, and said, "I understand. Would you at least allow me the honour of accompanying you back to your place, so I know you have arrived safely? And maybe we could talk some more too."

"Fine...." She said as she started heading for the door "but you have to tell me why you are so persistent and I want a better answer than that I'm pretty. Why are you so determined to follow me around?"

"Why I want to follow you around? I want to make sure you get home safe. I want to make sure that nothing happens to you. I believe that despite your good looking exterior, the beauty within you has been locked away because of the hurt you have suffered, and that beauty is a treasure worth persisting after." David said feeling a little unsure of himself. He hated being so direct so soon after meeting someone, but she asked so he answered. "I can see the hurt in you have suffered in your eyes, and you don't deserve that. You deserve to be happy. I would like a chance to give you that happiness." David said as a quick afterthought.

"Well you're coming off too strong." Sarah said as she walked out "you're trying way too hard. It's not an attractive quality. It's actually a little annoying."

"I'm not trying to be annoying. I'm trying to show you that, for some reason which I can't explain, I care about you. I would hate to see something happen to you. If you would rather part company from here, we can do that." David said dejectedly, "But please take my card with my numbers on it and call me, anytime." David said as he handed her a business card.

She took the business card and put it in her purse "I don't have a business card to give you but here..." She said finding a piece of paper and a pen and quickly writing down her phone number before handing it to him.

David took the piece of paper, and placed it in his pocket. "So are we calling it a night then?"
