I got into this thread rather late but I will add some things from my own experience.

As somebody else said, it you go with AFF, buy a membership. The free one is a waste of time for men because of all the limitations. There are at least ten times as many men there as women, so women can get by for free, but men can't. Include a pic of yourself with your profile, just your face and upper body.

About women's pictures: If a woman includes a very sexy pic of herself and writes about how she is so into sucking off men, and stuff like that, it's almost a certainty that contacting her with your email address will result in SPAM, mostly offering you a membersip in a pay site. Either that or she will be a prostitute. This is not intended to be a putdown of prostitutes, although I think you are looking for more.

Your best bet might be to go to the personals ads in the newspaper, as the characters in my Valentine's Day story did. You might not be as lucky as they were but there is little risk. I met my current wife there. This was 12 years ago and we have been happily married for 11 of those years.

One advantage of the newspaper ad is that a woman will not be coy with you. She can't pretend lack of interest because she would not have placed or answered an ad if she was not interested.

There don't seem to be a lot of women who meet my criteria in my area.

Of those that do, a fair number are functionally illiterate judging from their spelling and grammar.

Most of the rest are looking for a 'successful', 'professional' man.

The few remaining that I've contacted, write back once or twice and then nothing.

Once again, all my trying to interact with the world shows is how different I am from the mass of humanity.

Rob, if it makes you feel any better, I'm currently doing exactly the same thing. Put a profile up on a free dating website just after you did, inspired by your example. I'm still working on the finding something witty and urbane to say to the few ladies on there whom I might like.

Don't you dare give up. Like Imp said, you've gotta pan a lot of crap to find some gold and I'd feel thoroughly comforted by the thought that there's another good bloke out there doing it with me.

Let's face it, Rob, all of us are different from the mass of humanity. Most people don't write porn stories and post them on the internet and correspond with other witers who do the same thing.

I got tremendously lucky twelve years ago on a dating site in the newspaper, and if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. Don't be impatient and don't give up too soon.

Normality isn't the problem. The problem is that there are ten times as many men looking for women as there are women looking for men. That's about the same odds as you will find anywhere, though, so keep at it.

This may be true, but it's a tough statistic to deal with when you're a single woman who's found it impossible to find anyone to date.

Box, I'm going to try to be nice in responding to this. My exploits in online dating are not secret. I've discussed them on the board. I even offered Rob advice in this very thread based on my own experiences. So yes I've looked, and no, I've not just sat on my ass and expected someone to knock on my door. I've used several different dating sites, including plentyoffish that Rob is using, and I have had terrible luck. It's not the perfect solution for everyone.

Oh. And fyi, I even used AFF that you mentioned specifically.

I am sorry, SJ. I didn't mean to be so brusque.

I wouldn't actually recommend AFF, but somebody else had mentioned that site. Men are basically advertising for sex partners and the women respond accordingly. I am assuming Rob or you would want more than that.

I think ads in the personals section might work better. It worked great for me, and I have always thought of myself as something of a pariah.

How can you tell they have deleted your email?

It says so on my Sent Items list. Actually, I guess it's more of a PM system than e-mail.

Every woman except one has deleted what I sent them.

Shrugs. I didn't expect much. To be honest, if anything happens inside of a year, I'll be very surprised. I'm thinking more in terms of a decade.

An update.

This is going about as well as I expected. Very poorly.

Haven't had a woman contact me in weeks. Haven't seen any that appeal to me. And the one woman I've been talking to is drifting away due to mutual lack of interest.

Sigh.

Oh well. Didn't expect much. As I said, if anything happened inside of a year I would have been surprised.
