A Snipe is some sort of animal, I think. That's where we get the word sniper. The Scottish were the ones who hunted those creatures, and they used Gille suits (I think that's how it's spelled). Many techniques that the Scottish used in hunting Snipes was applied to sharp-shooting, which eventually became Sniping.

Anyways, it was during the American Revolution that the first actual use of sniping came into use during warfare. An American soldier using a rifle shoot and killed a British officer at 300 yards, throwing the British soliders into chaos. That was the first time that a soldier actually targeted a particular person, not just pulled the trigger and hope to hit someone.
