In the turbulent late 60s, with riots raging, black-owned businesses would put up signs to let the rioters know they were on their side. They wrote “Soul brother” or “Soul man.” The phrase inspired Isaac Hayes’ lyrics.
I absolutely love Sam and Dave! 🥰🥰🥰🥰. My mom turned me on to them in the early 70’s. 💜💜💜

It is debated whether or not this song was written as a tribute to the death of Andrew Goodman (and two others), a college friend of Paul Simon's, at the hands of the Flu Klux Klan in 1964. But it was dedicated to him later. It's a matter of when the song was written, before or after.
