A song that's personal to you?

There are many.

As my sig indicates, I've been on a bit of a Leonard Cohen kick lately...

I cover this one often when I perform, and it always takes me back to the time I first heard it, when I was in the throes of an intense (though foolish and ill-fated) romance. Songs often acquire powerful meaning for us by association...

I think love songs are particularly hard to write -- they certainly are for me -- because of the tricky border between sentiment and sentimentality. I think this is one of the very best.

"I'm Your Man"

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
If you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
If you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I'm your man

If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
If you want a doctor
I'll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I'm your man

Oh, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through
These promises to you
That I made but I could not keep
But a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I'd crawl to you , baby,
And I'd fall at your feet
And I'd howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I'd claw at your heart
And I'd tear at your sheet
I'd say please (Please!)
I'm your man

If you gotta sleep a moment on the road
I will steer for you
If you want to work the street alone
I'll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I'm your man

-Leonard Cohen

Ah Jesse you all ways do this just when I get back on my feet.

Google says Joshua Kadison

'Jesse'

From a phone booth in Vegas, Jesse calls at five am,
to tell me how she’s tired, of all of them.
She says, “Baby I’ve been thinkin’ ‘bout a trailer by the sea.
We could goto Mexico, you, the cat, and me.
We’ll drink Taquilla, and look for seashells, now doesn’t that sound sweet?”
Oh Jesse, you always do this, everytime I get back on my feet.

Oh Jesse, paint you pictures, ‘bout how it’s gonna be.
By now I should know better, your dreams are never free.
But tell me all about, our little trailer by the sea.
Oh Jesse, you can always sell any dream to me.
Oh Jesse, you can always sell any dream to me.

She asked me the cat’s been, I said, “Moses, he’s just fine.
But used to think about you, all of the time.
We finally took your pictures, down from off the wall.
Oh Jesse, how do you always seem to know just when to call?”.
She says, “Get your sutff together, bring Moses and drive real fast.”
And I listened to her promise, I swear to God this time it’s gonna last.

I’ll love in the sunshine, lay you down in the warm, white sand.
And who know, maybe this time, things wil turn out just the way you planned.

I'm editing these, because I don't want to spam the thread with lyrics and because while there are songs out there that are very personal to me (Desperado, A Better Man, Look Away to name a few), the songs that are the most personal to me are the ones I write myself.

Every Word You Say (whisper's song)

You make me speechless with your smile
You make me shiver deep inside
And I can't believe you love me
But every time I look, it's in your eyes

And it's a mystery to me
How you can give such honesty
And how you reach inside my heart
And make me tell you things that no one else can see

And you ask me when I see you, you turn to me and say,
"Have I told you that I love you? Have I told you that today?"

But you don't need to say it, I don't need it every day
'Cause you tell me that you love me with your eyes
And every word you say

I see my life in front of my
And I want everything I see
I see you and me in fifty years
Sitting by a weeping willow tree

I've never had these thoughts before
I've never opened up that door
But I look at you and see what we have
And I know it could be so much more

And you ask me when I see you, you turn to me and say,
"Have I told you that I love you? Have I told you that today?"

But you don't need to say it, I don't need it every day
'Cause you tell me that you love me with your eyes
And every word you say

And I guess I want to tell you how good you make me feel
'Cause I know I can't explain how every day it seems more real
I love the way you look at me, and the way you say my name
I could hear you say it time and time again........

But you don't need to say it, I don't need it every day
'Cause every time I hear you, your heart is on display
And every time I see you and you look at me that way
Well, you tell me that you love me with your eyes...

And every word you say

And lastly (before I bore you all too much), there's this:

Over In A Minute

You are the sunlight to my rain, the passion to my pain
You give me life again, and I love you
You are the brightness of my day, the whiteness to my gray
The wind that carries me away, and I love you
You're the beating of my heart, tearing me apart
Giving me a brand new start, and I love you
You're the dream that makes me real, you're the reason that I feel
You're satin over steel, and I love you

And when you turned to me
And said those words I wanted to hear
I could hear your voice
Speaking loud and clear

It was over in a minute, but the memory remains
But there's no sweeter feeling than reliving it again
And every time that I hear it, it takes away my pain
And each time that I recall - I love you more

There's a feeling deep inside, one that I can't hide
As insistent as the tide, and I love you
When I wake you're always there, in the day I sit and stare
And I can't believe you care, and I love you
I can feel you reaching out to me, across the miles, across the sea
'Cause I can hear you calling me, and I love you
I can almost feel you here, I can almost feel you near
I can almost feel the tears, and I love you

And when I think of all this distance
So many miles away
Intensifies the reason why
I still recall that day

It was over in a minute, but the memory remains
But there's no sweeter feeling than reliving it again
And every time that I hear it, it takes away my pain
And each time that I recall - I love you more

"Wanted:Dead of Alive" reminds me of an absent friend. It was her signiture song.:rose:

There are two songs that have always spoken to me.

They are:

Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

And Vincent by Don McLean

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
A silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

This one is also pretty personal to me, a few lines in particular. I often find myself singing it. Beautiful song - if you haven't heard it, you must.

Somewhere Only We Know ~ Keane

walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

[break]

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

Drive by the Cars. I want it played at my funeral.

There are many songs I love, music has always been important to me,,either because of the words or the music itself. I can't imagine a day without music in it.

~A~

i spent days sailing along the coast of Venezuela, listening to "Heartbeat City" on the walkman, singing along, waking the boats owner in the early hours with my singing (which is really bad!!)

"Drive" was a favorite in the wee hours of the nite,

i have been a fan of Harry Chapin for many years, and this song has spoken to me from the first time i heard it.

All my life's a circle;
Sunrise and sundown;
Moon rolls thru the nighttime;
Till the daybreak comes around.

All my life's a circle;
But I can't tell you why;
Season's spinning round again;
The years keep rollin' by.

It seems like I've been here before;
I can't remember when;
But I have this funny feeling;
That we'll all be together again.
No straight lines make up my life;
And all my roads have bends;
There's no clear-cut beginnings;
And so far no dead-ends.

Chorus:
I found you a thousand times;
I guess you done the same;
But then we lose each other;
It's like a children's game;

As I find you here again;
A thought runs through my mind;
Our love is like a circle;
Let's go 'round one more time.

Chorus

so full of hope and joyous expectation, a never say quit attitude twinged by the realities of life's challenges

I used to perform this one when I helped out with a karaoke crew, I always loved the lyrics.

guess there is something about a good ballad that tugs at the heartstrings and makes the tearducts open ...

Oh yes, without a doubt. Some ballads speak to you in a way that no one else can. I mean how many people had a tear in their eye when Elton John performed 'Candle in the Wind,' for princess Di, some songs say more than words alone ever could.

I'm No Angel - The Allmen Brothers Band

No I'm no angel, No I'm no stranger to the street
I`ve got my label, So I won't crumble at your feet
And I know baby, So I've got scars upon my cheek
And I'm half crazy, Come on and love me baby

So you find me hard to handle, well I'm easier to hold
So you like my spurs that jingle and I never leave you cold
So I might steal your diamonds I'll bring you back some gold
I'm no angel

No I'm no angel, No I'm no stranger to the dark
Let me rock your cradle, Let me start a fire with your spark
Oh come on baby, Come and let me show you my tatoo
Let me drive you crazy, Come on and love me baby

So you don't give a darn about me, I never treat you bad
I won't ever lift a hand to hurt you & I'll always leave you glad
So I might steal your diamonds I'll bring you back some gold
I'm no angel

Great song when you're feeling like life has beat the hell out of you. Get up and get moving!

(Also a great song to exercise to.)

Bring on the Rain
- Billy Montana/Helen Darling

Another day has almost come and gone
Can’t imagine what else could wrong
Sometimes I’d like to hide away somewhere and lock the door
A single battle lost but not the war

'Cause tomorrow’s another day
And I’m thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

It’s almost like the hard times circle ‘round
A couple drops and they all start coming down
Yeah, I might feel defeated,
I might hang my head
I might be barely breathing - but I’m not dead

Tomorrow’s another day
And I’m thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

I’m not gonna let it get me down
I’m not gonna cry
And I’m not gonna lose any sleep tonight...

'Cause tomorrow’s another day
And I am not afraid
So bring on the rain

ps to Raphy, Please post more. How on earth could you think you would be boring us? :rose:

Min, I had a friend send me that song, she plays it every morning before she goes to work to get through the bullshit ahead of her. Thanks for posting.:rose:

Has anyone else noticed how easily you'd forgotten some of the songs being shown here. I keep being reminded of songs I haven't heard for ages.
