Angels

On the Story Ideas forum is this thread on the nature of angels and demons. Some suppose they *are* pure spirit; others, that they are ET alien races; others, that they co-evolved on Earth. Cultures before and beyond the Judeo-Xian-Muslim realm harbor such spiritual entities. The Abrahamic faiths see angels as messengers (that's what the word means) and I guess demons are the same, but Bad News. Think of divine bicycle couriers and repo men.

They're sexless shapeshifters, too, like androgynous were-spirits. But we like to see angels as sexy humanoids. I'm not sure when angels first grew wings. I must read about the evolution of angels. [/me hits Wikipedia] Oho -- this says wings first appeared just before CE 400. I guess they had to walk before then. Thank you Hypoxia. I will check out the link when I get back from an evening out. I became interested in angels when my sister passed away. She collected them, so every time I saw one I thought of her. I then started seeing the most beautiful pictures of them on the internet and decided I would collect them into one place and share them with others.

I think that demons and angels are closely related (I post a lot of demons in my oddities thread but it is not exclusive to demons) I had an incredibly erotic dream about a demon once, honestly I wish I could dream like that every night! I've long been interested in paranormal entities and linkages between angels, demons, saints, godlings, ghosts, as expressed worldwide. I'm especially drawn to Abrahamic overlays on indigenous cultures. A few dozen angels, santos, and the like inhabit my house, mostly wood, mostly hand-carved by Mayan crafters. Traditional Mesoamerican spirits are translated into Biblical terms but retain their origins.

That's part of the genius of Xianity, to conquer and consume societies and convert their deities to angels, demons, saints, etc. Conquered peoples can retain portions of their traditional worship while seemingly obeying the occupiers' clergy. The art produced is a wonderful mashup.

I have more spirit stories planned featuring just such ambiguous entities. Maybe this cold winter will put me in the spirit to write them.
